Tsurugihime has the feel of what a traditional Japanese samurai film that fans are sure to enjoy!
A lot of new video games and awards are being revealed at INDIE Live Expo Winter 2022 online, and one game that caught our attention is Tsurugihime. The two words put together here mean Sword (Tsurugi) and Princess (Hime) and the opening moments in the trailer show just how powerful this woman is with blades floating by her side, ready to use at any time!
The colourful teaser reveals a RPG style game, where you play a female heroine roaming a lavish countryside in preparation for an episode battle that’ll come in 100 days, and you decide her fate. That is, will she live or die by the blade? It has the feel of what a traditional Japanese samurai film must fulfill, and delve into other situations.
In regards to why this game is singled out is that the character designs are by Kouhaku Kuroboshi (Summon Night, Kino’s Journey, and SAO Alternative) and the music direction is led by composer Takeharu Ishimoto (Youtube Channel; The World Ends with You, Kingdom Hearts).
Dark Deity and it’s free for newcomers to download and play this weekend!
Dark Deity, the turn-based tactical RPG inspired by the genre’s classics from developer Sword and Axe and publisher Freedom Games, celebrates bringing its army count to more than 100,000 units sold across Nintendo Switch and PC versions. To commemorate the occasion, new recruits can join in by claiming a copy for free on Epic Game Store throughout this weekend. For a review of the game, please check out our review here.
As Shawn Trommeshauser wrote, “Despite its faults, I enjoyed the time I spent playing Dark Deity, and I saw a lot of potential in the game. It’s clear that the developers put some effort into sprucing up the presentation for the Switch, but for every step forward, there was an awkward step back. Given the choice, I would go back to the Steam version for the superior version for the cleaner visuals and mouse control. otherwise they’re completely on par. But if you’re looking for a light Fire Emblem style experience, especially on the go, Dark Deity on Switch might just scratch that itch.”

Mantic Games is still shipping the Hellboy RPG to Kickstarter backers for the past week and a half, and yes, I got my copy! This unboxing video reveals what’s inside and more….
Mantic Games is still shipping the Hellboy RPG to Kickstarter backers for the past week and a half, and yes, I got my copy! The following video is my reaction to examining this product in under ten minutes, and I can’t wait to GM a session! I have friends interested in playing and I’ll need a week or two to learn the rules. A followup article is under consideration so I can provide a more in-depth analysis after we played the game. Stay tuned!
I opted not to pick up the miniatures that came with the next tier of this Hellboy RPG Kickstarter and have no regrets. It looks like most of them can be obtained directly from the publisher as part of the board game expansion products. A street release may be coming later in the year. To keep tabs on when this will become available, please visit the official website for the latest updates.
Update: May 1, 2022: B.P.R.D. Field Manual is an optional upgrade that, while available for all pledge levels, was deceptive in the item description; I thought I’d get it as one of the unlocked stretch goals but only as a digital file. I thought a print version could come along with mine, but it isn’t. It’s for GMs so they can design a game.
Avid Dungeons and Dragons players have lots of options when wanting to find a similar experience in a digital video game. From official products like Baldur’s Gate, which puts the player first and persistent “Living” campaigns where it encourages strategy (and regular check-ins), the gambit is wide and varied.
WIMO Games has joined this world with RPG Dice: Heroes of Whitestone™. This game combines traditional board game style mechanics (navigating around like in Monopoly and getting cards which offer options in how to continue) with role playing type elements. Depending on the tile your team lands in, you either find treasure, get an encounter, progress through the story (like in a choose your own adventure novel) or have a chance to win more goodies to make your characters stronger. I recommend playing this game on a tablet than smartphone. The amount of details in the cartoon style graphics and all the buttons you’re navigating through doesn’t work well on a small screen.
