Dark Horse Comic’s Crone to Arrive Nov 6th!

Spoiler Alert

Publisher: Dark Horse Comics

When a comic book is simply titled, Crone, some readers may think it’s a work developed for the Halloween season. After all, the name implies an old witch, well practised in eldritch magiks.

Instead, it’s a fantasy epic. Bloody Bliss was once a beautiful red headed champion in the likes of Red Sonja and her reputation was to be feared. Over the years she never lost the fire. The only problem was with time; it is cruel and she has not died in the field of glory like she hoped. She’s not like those immortal valkyries.

A Creepy International Movie Guide to Enjoying Halloween

CroneBy Ed Sum
(The Vintage Tempest)

The horror movie experience is subjective when looking at any screaming list of what to watch in the days leading to or on Halloween Day. Any long-time fan will have developed an immunity to certain levels of gore. When I was younger, I was not as hardened. What you see here is one where I reflect to those movies that really got to me when I was a tyke–still discovering what comes naught may.

I break a few entries down to include even more films since they represent a particular subgenre. Here’s my guide for what to view tonight (or any other). For a few of us, All Hallow’s Eve lasts longer. After all, the Day of the Dead takes place November 2nd, but this cultural celebration differs from the American-Celtic tradition.

Häxan
(1922)

Horror films from the silent film era are unique. The more aged the presentation is, the more detached it is from our sense of what modern times entails. Perhaps the way each frame flips or an original cinema screening skips, can jar our belief in reality–whether or not it is dreamlike.

There’s no denying Nosferatu (1922), The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (109), The Phantom Carriage (1920) and The Phantom of the Opera (1925) are masterpieces. A bigger question lies in what can truly disturb, or cause nightmares to those not used to tales of the macabre? When this Swedish-Danish work was originally meant to be a documentary that looks at Witchcraft throughout the ages–also this film’s English title–and the gory practices involved that cast them as demons, this film does the job!

Halloween is near and it’s Insidious to Fear this Franchise is Not Continuing

Insidious (2010) - IMDbBy Ed Sum
(The Vintage Tempest)

If there are any more Insidious movies to be made, the producers are not saying. There are whispers of a fifth movie, but how many fans want it? Many believe the saga has run full circle. When considering The Last Key ended at where it started, where it can go will depends on where the story can go next. Lin Shaye gives the character of Elise Rainier credibility to what most real-life paranormal investigators do.

When this series began, we were introduced to a young Dalton Lambert (Ty Simpkins). He is gifted with the ability to walk in a netherworld (known as the Further) unabated. His parents, Josh (Patrick Wilson) and Renai (Rose Byrne), are very scared and believe with this talent, he will lose his way. Spirits populate this realm and none of them are friendly; they spirits wish to feed upon his life energy like a vampire requiring blood.

Maleficent: Queen of Fae or Mistress of Evil?

Image result for Maleficent 2 posterBy Ed Sum
(The Vintage Tempest)

Spoiler Alert

Had Maleficent been known by any other name I’d swear she is Morgan le Fay from King Arthur. Not in the traditional sense ala Thomas Malory‘s Morte D’Arthur but instead is in the vein of Marion Zimmer Bradley‘s Mists of Avalon series to which is where the franchise may head towards. I would not be surprised if Angelina Jolie (who plays the title character) told the writers to draw inspiration from the book series.

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil continues being a supernatural protector in the world of Sleeping Beauty. When one of the faerie kind shows a certain prowess, he or she can become something more than just another demigod.
