The Paranormal Activity franchise ended many years ago. and some fans may argue it’s been a trailblazer for the found footage genre. Anastasia Hanna of mxdwn.com thinks so, and I have the opposite opinion. It’s been 10 years since its wide theatrical release on Oct 16, 2009 (technically 12 if you count the film festivals), and the last film was about three years ago. Unless there’s a steady stream of this franchise, interest will pitter off.

The impact of this franchise faded with the passage of time. This series has always been a social experiment from the get-go. It’s designed to see how many people will react to the jump scares than to follow the trail of clues offered in all the movies made to date. Blair Witch did a better job with this particular subgenre of horror films since it felt realistic. It did not depend on sequels to make a lasting impact which gets imitated in comedy variety shows and in pop culture. After six films, there’s nothing to even truly recall other than the one ‘scary’ scene where the bedroom door swings open and the fate of Katie and Micah unwinds for all to see.

Twilight Zone’s past the Golden Years, It’s Silver!

2019 marks the 60th anniversary of The Twilight Zone’s debut on CBS. Shot entirely in iconic black and white, the trailblazing anthology series aired from 1959 to 1964 and changed the history of television with its clever twist endings and sharp social criticism. The Twilight Zone was the brainchild of Rod Serling, the show’s ambitious and sharply dressed tour guide, whom the entertainment business had once regarded as the “Angry Young Man” of Television.

This October, Humanoids, the publisher of some of the world’s most iconic and groundbreaking science fiction and fantasy graphic novels, will celebrate The Twilight Zone’s 60th Anniversary with the publication of internationally acclaimed cartoonist Koren Shadmi’s dazzling biography Twilight Man: Rod Serling & The Birth of Television.

Not to be confused with the Brad Pitt movie of the same name, Ad Astra: 20 Years of Newspaper Ads for Sci-Fi & Fantasy Films says it all. It’s a huge collection of clippings which brings me back to very memorable days of when I went to the movies a lot–the 80s and 90s. This book is a spinoff of Michael Gingold‘s other tomes, namely his selling Ad Nauseam: Newsprint Nightmares from the 80s and followup, from the 90s and 00s. His love for collecting clippings is very evident in what’s curated in this collection. I can only imagine what his scrapbook library looks like.

Alternate artwork, short three sentence reviews (from the major papers of those days) and rarely seen ads from editions from other countries make up this work.

The month of October is perfect to get caught up on what William Shatner is up to. The former captain of the Starship Enterprise is now the face of The Unexplained, a History channel program that looks at the paranormal world in all its myriad forms. This new series started mid-Summer and I waited for the season to be over to binge-watch the entire eight-episode run. Had the producers been smart, they should’ve simply called it Weird or What? season five.

This previous version was a much more entertaining show. It had more of Bill’s wit and panache. He would always end the episode saying, “Isn’t that weird… or what?” As much as I’d love to see him in the field investigating these mysteries, my guess his heart may not handle being it.

With three Star Trek alumni involved in Devil’s Revenge, what can go wrong? Not much. A leap of faith is required to understand how a family deals with a curse placed upon the whole generational line. When Sergio (Jason Brooks) has to locate a lost relic (a fetish) that’s also a key to unleashing Orc-like minions, just touching it is enough to cause hallucinations. He raced out of the cave like a bat out of hell. These phantoms are not those bikers from Nicola’s Cage Mandy, but they look like they sure can be!
