This summer, brace yourself for non-stop action, suspense, and edge-of-your-seat thrills as something unknown strikes all life on earth. Shout! Studios is bringing the action-thriller The Blackout: Invasion Earth, directed by Egor Baranov (Gogol Viy), on VOD, digital, and home entertainment. His move from fantasy to science fiction should be worth examining.

His film was originally released on Nov 21, 2019 in Russia with mixed reaction. As for how international fans of Baranov’s work will react, only time will tell. Those anxious to see just what kind of aliens the Iron Curtain is hiding will be in for a surprise. In this movie’s case, it is about what remains of one of Earth’s forces. Also, who is Ra? Could this individual be of Egyptian pre-history? A lot of questions are asked, and fans of Russian made cinema won’t have long to wait.

From the official press release:

When the end comes for civilization, it will not be terrorism or nuclear war that causes it, but The Blackout.

An unexplained phenomenon has struck the Earth. Contact between most towns on Earth has been severed. A small area in Eastern Europe is the only location that still has electricity. When military forces venture outside, they discover a shocking truth — corpses everywhere. In stores, in cars, on roads, in hospitals and railway stations. Who or what is destroying all life on Earth? And how long can the last outpost of mankind endure?

Fans of last year’s Chinese New Year spectacle, Ne Zha, will be in for a long wait to see part two. Jiang Ziya is delayed due to the fears of the coronavirus spreading in mainland China. Until this movie gets its proper premiere, all international screenings are also pre-empted.

At least for viewers abroad, they can take in the home video release of the film that started it all. The full review of Ne Zha can be found here and we can examine it in detail now for clues in where the second of the series in the Fengshen Cinematic Universe will go.

Reading the Two Trailer Clues Before Frozen 2

Release Date:
November 21, 2019

Usually there’s at two, and if we’re lucky three, trailers leading up to the release of the most anticipated films for the year. In the case of Disney Frozen 2, we only have two. Part of the appeal is not only with the Broadway style spectacle and musical numbers. For me, it’s the folklore being established. Dark Horse Comics teased at a few elements in its two graphic novels–namely neighbouring kingdoms to which Arendelle is either at peace with (or not).

In looking over the trailers again before opening night, I previously said everything I can with the first release. The second one is a bit more telling. We are introduced to Anna and Elsa’s parents, telling a once upon a time style tale. There was once an enchanted forest. It was magical but something went wrong. Nothing could get in or out because a veil of mist appeared.

Just how different this take of Nezha is when compared to others will depend on what this entry offers as its tale.

The power of myth is strong in China; Nezha is a guardian deity who perhaps rivals the fame of the Monkey King. Both are household names, and the literature they hail from is the most studied. It’s a classical work which teaches prime virtues to which many folks from this country tend to follow.

In Journey to the West, this human fought the primate when he rebelled. They would later become friends. The 3D animated movie about the boy to become a god debuted early this year and it has been making huge waves as it looks to this man’s early days–demonized and not knowing his place in the world–before being the individual he is now.

Hidden Kaiju in Godzilla: King of Monsters Trailer?

Just how many extra monsters can you spot in this latest trailer for Godzilla?

Godzilla King of the Monsters Movie PosterRelease Date:
May 31, 2019

The trailer for Godzilla: King of Monsters dropped on Monday and the film will no doubt make many lists of most anticipated films to see in 2019! While most of the additional kaiju has been identified–Rodan, Mothra (two forms) and King Ghidorah–could more appear? Most likely not, but after countless rewatches, I swear the tail being swung belongs to Anguirus.
