Usually there’s at two, and if we’re lucky three, trailers leading up to the release of the most anticipated films for the year. In the case of Disney Frozen 2, we only have two. Part of the appeal is not only with the Broadway style spectacle and musical numbers. For me, it’s the folklore being established. Dark Horse Comics teased at a few elements in its two graphic novels–namely neighbouring kingdoms to which Arendelle is either at peace with (or not).

In looking over the trailers again before opening night, I previously said everything I can with the first release. The second one is a bit more telling. We are introduced to Anna and Elsa’s parents, telling a once upon a time style tale. There was once an enchanted forest. It was magical but something went wrong. Nothing could get in or out because a veil of mist appeared.

Years later, the sisters are tighter than ever. They faced incredible odds (including adventures which can become side stories should it ever head to Disney Plus). But a voice is calling to Elsa (Idina Menzel) and for act one, we’ll find her becoming distant. She may well be neglecting her duties as a Queen; as a result, the Kingdom is in danger. Not only are her powers getting stronger but also she may be embarking on this sabbatical on purpose.

In what she and Anna (Kristen Bell), Kristoff (Jonathan Groff), Olaf the snowman (Josh Gad) and Sven the reindeer has to find is a way for her to properly learn how to control her powers. Several more obstacles lay ahead of them: visions of a water mare, a forest of fire, and giants! They could be the dark creatures which will later inspire Grimm’s Fairy Tales.

An unknown mystic may well have the answers, but all we see is that she’s the local shaman. If Frozen 2 borrows a touch from the Nordic mythology (as I’ve previously explored), I will not be surprised. I feel Elsa is a Goddess in the making. Just who she truly is a daughter of must be answered.
