New Threats are in Store in Star Trek: Picard

Star Trek: Picard brings back a franchise some fans believe to have strayed far from everything that was beloved. Whether it’s about space exploration or making a social commentary about the times, I love the series for the characters. Jean-Luc is stern; over the seven-year run of Next Generation, we saw how he suffered and we saw how he developed. Sir Patrick Stewart seems to be showing his age and it works to highlight the golden years of his life.

Part of the new series relies on viewers recall of the films which continued the series in an extended form. With a story that picks up many years after the movie Nemesis, the captain retired. He’s having nightmares, and the life thereafter is a little more rough than kosher. That’s until Dahj (Isa Briones), a young lady appears at the family vineyard begging for help.

Takes on the Trailers unveiled during NYCC

On the West Coast, the San Diego Comic Convention offers trailers of the must-see movies and television series of the 2018 and 2019 season. Add a few more months into the mix, the New York Comic Convention is the East Coast show to pay attention to. The new Hellboy movie trailer dropped at this event, and the studio has yet to release on YouTube. Reports reveal the fact this work is more of a horror flick than the light-hearted del Toro version. Even the tease to X-Men: Dark Phoenix was shown, and based on what I have read, the set up pays homage to her comic book origins before spinning in a different direction.

In those trailers that are currently online, I am most particularly excited for the following:

 

If this extended Aquaman trailer indicates anything, this film will put the DC Cinematic Universe back on track. It has the feel of 300 meets Lord of the Rings. When dealing with Atlantis, the joke is not with how star Jason Momoa got his start (he became popular in Stargate’s imagining of this sunken city), but rather in how he can become the next king. The digital set pieces look very impressive, and on a proper IMAX screen, this movie will no doubt deliver.

Star Trek is So Fleeting. A Tale of Two Starships and Hopelessness….

One show brings the heart and camaraderie of Star Trek back to television while the other only seems to bring the franchise’s name to get attention

Ever since Star Trek: Enterprise went off the air in 2005, there has been a distinctly Star Trek shaped hole in television. But in 2017, two shows have appeared to take audiences back into space. The Orville, Seth MacFarlane’s Trek-Inspired show which airs on Fox, and CBS’s own Star Trek: Discovery, the official Trek series that the fans have waited over a decade for.

One show brings the heart and camaraderie of Star Trek back to television while the other only seems to bring the franchise’s name to get attention. I offer opinions based on specific events and elements from both shows which may or may not give away key elements and plot twists.

The Rocky Road to Star Trek: Discovery

The ‘Kelvin’ universe movies, as they’ve come to be known as, are fun, humorous adventures, but they are not very good at doing what makes Star Trek special.

Debuting Sept 24, 2017 on CBS (USA), Space (Canada) and Netflix (other countries).

I hope Star Trek: Discovery is great! I honestly do! This series needed a revitalisation ever since Enterprise ended after only four seasons back in 2005. Even though the reboot series of films has kept the series in the public eye, they clearly traded an exploration of science and the human condition for flashy effects, and intense battles.

The ‘Kelvin’ universe movies, as they’ve come to be known as, are fun, humorous adventures, but they are not very good at doing what makes Star Trek special. They certainly lost something along the way in the transition into full-fledged action movies and most people I’ve spoken to agree.

The reboot films have to be given some slack because it’s impossible to build up and maintain the kind of lore and character comradery that the Star Trek TV series offer when you’re limited to a single story every couple of years. And in today’s environment, it would be much more feasible convincing a movie studio to fund a rollercoaster of an action film would be much more feasible than something more along the lines of “Inner Light,” easily one of the best episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation — a much more cerebral story where Captain Picard learns of the culture and fate of an alien civilization when a probe makes him live out a lifetime inside his own mind.

Ed’s Top 10 Picks In Honour of Star Trek at 50 Years

There’s plenty of product to enjoy when considering all the television broadcasts and novels that’s been put out there. We consider the best of Star Trek at 50 years.

Star Trek at 50 yearsSeptember 8 marks the official date Star Trek came on the air for three years of this original series’ five-year mission. To look at Star Trek at 50 years, we now have various ways to admire the frontiers it has conquered.

Soon, there will be a new series, titled Star Trek: Discovery, which will become available on CBS All Access and other networks around the world. Comics and books are already being planned to expand upon this prequel series. Everyone will be excited and some of us will ask if it will be faithful to creator Gene Roddenberry‘s vision? According to StarTrek.com, yes! Older fans will be thrilled and for a new generation, they get a taste of what made this universe great! To get bold new adventures “on television” after a decade-long absence will be particularly thrilling.
