When Genre Television Learned to Think, and Why It’s Quickly Vanishing from the Dial

When Netflix will soon dump all of Star Trek, and traditional networks are broadcasting less genre television than ever, where do audiences go to get their fix?

genre television's fading gloryLooking back, the last century feels like the moment genre television quietly defined its contract with the audience. Most of those early experiments arrived in short waves, and like the tides, they came and went. Some returned decades later on specialty stations or streaming platforms. And these days, nearly everything is being tucked into quieter shores. Every so often, the tropes that once defined a series are reskinned for a new generation, which is simply how television writing evolves.

From that first wave, some re-dos leaned into long-form storytelling, while others stayed loyal to the standalone format.

The 70s offered a handful of tests, including Shazam! (1974–1976), Wonder Woman (1975–1979), and The Incredible Hulk (1977–1982). The latter proved that if you give audiences a hero they can empathize with, they will follow even an unresolved quest, like Bruce Banner’s search for a cure. Sadly, many genre series never reached a true conclusion. The Time Tunnel (1966–1967) is only one of several 60s science-fiction shows left without closure.

The Secret Storylines K-Pop Demon Hunters 2 Needs

It’s official: K-Pop Demon Hunters 2 is happening, but fans may wait years. If the sequel leans into folklore, side stories and stronger character arcs, it could become a rare animated follow-up that truly matures with its audience.

K-Pop Demon Hunters movie posterIt’s official—K-Pop Demon Hunters 2 is a go. Fans, however, will have to wait perhaps four years before it arrives. That’s a tough pill to swallow for anyone hoping to see Rumi, Mira, Su-Min, and the rest of the team back in action. What made the debut spectacular was its blend of folklore and modern Korean pop culture—especially Rumi’s reluctant connection to the demon world, which now puts her at a crossroads between fame, duty, and peace.

Although the wait will be long, hopefully it’ll all be worth it. Fans have expectations—especially in seeing what’s next for the lead, and whether her demon boyfriend will come back. That forbidden attraction is what drew me into the tale. The trope is a variation on the Legend of the White Snake, a classic story where a goddess falls for a mortal man. Here, the roles are reversed, giving the story a fresh emotional dynamic. The beliefs about what happens to the soul are also distinct from other cultural takes, which makes this story feel uniquely Korean.

Alternative Paranormal TV Shows to Explore This Halloween and Beyond in 2025

Explore fresh and spine-tingling alternative paranormal TV shows for Halloween 2025. From folklore to real-life hauntings, ditch the jump scares.

Poltergeist TV series classic horror Alternative Paranormal TV ShowsHalloween is almost here, and this year the TV networks are finally changing things up with alternative paranormal TV shows 2025. Gone are the endless ghost-hunting clones—this season focuses on storytelling, folklore, and atmospheric suspense. From the chilling origins of Pennywise in IT: Welcome to Derry to real-life supernatural encounters in My Haunted Hometown, these shows promise fresh twists and spine-tingling thrills for viewers who crave more than just jump scares. And I feel it’s about bloody time!

This year is different. The new paranormal shows making their debut aren’t chasing cheap scares—they’re leaning into storytelling, folklore, and actual atmosphere. Instead of ghost hunters yelling at the dark, we’re getting richer narratives, cultural explorations, and fresh twists on the supernatural. The output isn’t as prolific, and I’m thankful for that.

While there’s one new show expected to air on Travel Channel, My Haunted Hometown sounds promising. It’s a documentary series that takes viewers on a journey to small towns across North America to explore real-life paranormal encounters. The show’s unique approach is to have the residents themselves serve as the tour guides, sharing their vivid and often terrifying first-hand accounts of the supernatural activity. These families or folks refuse to leave. Although this series uses dramatic recreations to bring these experiences to life, just whether these incidents are too crazy to be true remains to be seen.

PART TWO: Alternative Paranormal TV Shows Leaning on Realism

While few shows currently match the originality of classics like The Paranormal Zone or Sightings, there are modern series that echo its thoughtful, culturally aware approach:

Historically Haunted (2025)

Historically Haunted docuseries hosted by Amy Bruni Led by Amy Bruni, this upcoming docuseries explores haunted histories across various locations. It will blend historical context with paranormal investigation and consider what is said to be lingering around still. Broadcast date is TBA, and when it’s led by this talent, some people will be glad she’s never left the scene.

Haunted Discoveries (2023–present)

Haunted Discoveries (2023–present)Haunted Discoveries is a North American paranormal documentary series that premiered on October 6, 2023 and follows a team of investigators, including Ghost Hunters alumni Brandon Alvis and Mustafa Gatollari, as they explore haunted locations across Kentucky and Illinois. This series can be found on T&E (Canada) and Tubi (USA, New Zealand).

OUT THERE: Crimes of the Paranormal (2024)

OUT THERE- Crimes of the Paranormal (2024)This HULU series explores eight true crime cases that involve shocking encounters with the paranormal world. Through eyewitness accounts, expert interviews, and all-new investigations, the series delves into cases where the line between crime and the supernatural blurs. It streams on Hulu.

Final Thoughts

With these alternative paranormal shows, 2025 offers something fresh for Halloween enthusiasts—whether you prefer suspenseful storytelling, rich folklore, or psychological thrills. There’s no need to follow Zak Bagans. Jason Hawes’ attempt to go solo with Ghost Nation folded in 2021, when the parent show Ghost Hunters moved networks. Also, with Grant Wilson coming back briefly, it’s good to see the old crew back together again, even though not all of them are always 100% committed. Change is overdue, and thankfully, we’re starting to see it.

Five Sci-Fi and Fantasy Series 2025 to Look Forward To This Fall / Winter

Discover the top sci-fi and fantasy series 2025 to watch this fall and winter, from long-awaited finales to exciting new premieres on streaming.

Top sci-fi and fantasy series 2025With autumn in full swing in some parts of the world, the season brings a fresh wave of supernatural and sci-fi delights to television and streaming services. While some releases that started in August kind of counts, I must mention Alien: Earth along with Peacemaker. But for the official start of the season, here are five other sci-fi and fantasy series 2025 that I’m most looking forward to checking out this fall and winter.

And at long last, the much-anticipated finale of Secret Things is arriving—a conclusion that’s been years in the making. But I have to begin with:

Talamasca: The Secret Order (AMC)

Talamasca: The Secret Order key art — sci-fi and fantasy series 2025Premieres: October 26, 2025The Talamasca has long been whispered about in Anne Rice’s gothic novels, but this series finally puts them under the spotlight. As supernatural auditors, they keep tabs on vampires, witches, and all things that go bump in the night. On screen, that mix feels like The X-Files with rosaries and velvet capes. Launching just before Halloween, AMC is clearly betting that occult espionage and candlelit conspiracies will hook fans old and new.

Pluribus (Apple TV+)

Pluribus key art — sci-fi and fantasy series 2025Premieres: November 7, 2025 (two-episode launch)

From the team that gave us Severance comes a new nine-part series that promises to probe the ethics of power and technology. Pluribus looks polished, eerie, and loaded with allegory. If Black Mirror had a sibling that was less anthology and more serialized thriller, this would be it. With Apple’s knack for moody prestige sci-fi, this one could ignite serious water-cooler debates.

The Mighty Nein (Amazon Prime Video)

The Mighty Nein poster — sci-fi and fantasy series 2025Premieres: November 19, 2025

Critical Role isn’t slowing down. If The Legend of Vox Machina captured the spirit of high-energy campaigns, The Mighty Nein dives into murkier waters. This crew is scrappy, emotional, and gloriously messy—a perfect match for fans who like their fantasy tangled with moral ambiguity. Expect dazzling animation, sharp humour, and references that will reward long-time Critters while still staying friendly for newcomers to Exandria.

Returning Favourites

Stranger Things — Final Season (Netflix)

Stranger Things Season 5 poster — sci-fi and fantasy series 2025

Begins: November 26, 2025 (Volume 1)

The Hawkins saga has always been more than just monsters—it’s a love letter to the 80s, stitched together with friendship and nostalgia. The final season arrives in three parts, carrying fans through Thanksgiving, Christmas, and into New Year’s Eve. Few series have defined a decade of streaming like this one, and its conclusion is poised to be an event. Whether it sticks the landing alongside the greats remains to be seen, but one thing’s certain: Stranger Things is ending on its own terms, fireworks and all.

Marvel Zombies (Disney+)

Marvel Zombies poster — sci-fi and fantasy series 2025Premieres: September 24, 2025

The Marvel multiverse takes a grotesque detour as Earth’s mightiest heroes become flesh-eating nightmares. With returning MCU voice talent, this isn’t just a side story—it’s Marvel embracing horror. The art style is bloodier, the tone darker, and for fans of the original comic run, this is long overdue.

Honourable Mentions: Network TV

Streaming dominates the landscape for bold sci-fi and fantasy, but a few network shows still merit a glance for casual genre fans. These are ongoing series:

  • Ghosts (CBS) – A supernatural comedy blending humor with light ghostly adventures, perfect for fans looking for something fun without diving too deep into horror.
  • La Brea (NBC) – A sci-fi mystery exploring a massive sinkhole in Los Angeles that leads to a prehistoric world. It’s tense, adventurous, and network-friendly.

For those of us who grew up relying on network TV for our weekly dose of adventure and intrigue, it’s worth noting just how much the landscape has shifted. The Big Three—ABC, NBC, and CBS—no longer offer the kind of bold, imaginative programming that once made shows like Magnum P.I. or Simon & Simon must-watch staples. Today, if you want daring sci-fi, supernatural thrills, or morally complex fantasy, streaming platforms are where the innovation lives. That’s why this season’s lineup of AMC, Netflix, Apple TV+, Disney+, and Prime Video originals is so exciting—they’re taking risks and telling stories that network TV simply can’t.

The Conjuring Last Rites is Hardly a Finale. It’s More Like The Passing of the Torch.

All The Conjuring Last Rites does is to lean heavily on callbacks to earlier films. While Judy Warren’s expanded role adds some novelty, the result feels more like a greatest-hits package than a true conclusion.

The Conjuring Last Rites PosterThe Conjuring Last Rites may mark the end of the franchise on the big screen, but HBO Max’s TV series to continue the story will keep the Warrens alive. Just this week, the streamer announced Nancy Won as showrunner, with Peter Cameron and Cameron Squires joining the writer’s room. While Ed and Lorraine Warren claimed to have investigated countless cases, only the most sensational ones ever made it to theatres—often as overblown, fictionalized spectacles. What’s missing are the controversies surrounding the couple’s methods and credibility, which can take the franchise to a level other films never explore.

At the heart of this latest film lies a familiar question: who—or what—is the evil that continues to pursue the Warrens? Earlier entries teased a hidden hand behind Annabelle and The Nun, but ultimately the lore hinges on one figure: Valak.

Asking Ty/Hinox Wesley 20 Questions at the Victoria Fringe Festival

Experience 20 Questions at Victoria Fringe: two paranormal investigators, a mischievous Reaper, and secrets that’ll haunt you long after the show ends.

20 Questions
Played at the Victoria Fringe Festival August 22nd and 31st

20 Questions feels less like a challenge to the Reaper and more like an exploration of why certain relationships matter. Anyone familiar with The Midnight Game may recognize some of its inspiration, but playwright Ty/Hinox Wesley seems to lean heavily on the Japanese game Hyakumonogatari Kaidankai. In that tradition, participants extinguish one of a hundred candles after telling a spooky story, with the last remaining candleholder facing a far graver consequence. Here, each question functions like a candle: early answers reveal small truths, but as the count nears the last, the stakes become existential.

Only the last person asked faces the ultimate danger if they lie, creating a natural crescendo. Audience and participants alike sense the tension, and the structure excels at revealing secrets—both about the characters’ relationships and their inner lives. Who volunteers first? Who cracks under pressure? These moments blend psychological suspense with subtle comedy, exploring trust, honesty, and unspoken bonds.
