Where’s The New Attitude with Beverly Hills Cop Axel F?

Beverly Hills Cop Axel F isn’t always focussed on the nostalgia, and that’s a good thing since the story takes place nearly 30 years later.

One of the most beloved franchises from the 80s is Beverly Hills Cop. I believe that’s because of the music. To bring it back decades later had me asking why. While part of the reason is attributed to Eddie Murphy enjoying a comeback after the success of Dolemite Is My Name, there may be another reason. Last year’s Candy Cane Lane is forgettable, I’ll still think of him as the irrepressible Donkey from the Shrek films more than anything else. As for the character that made him the superstar, to title the continuation Beverly Hills Cop Axel F says it all.

Although I was half expecting to hear new music, the new song remixes works just as well. Sadly, this fourth instalment forgets Patti Labelle’s “Stir It Up.” I can listen to that song all day. But as for this film, it doesn’t really focus on the beloved element that made the early two films (the third wasn’t that good) memorable. It’s the camaraderie the trio–Foley (Murphy), Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) and Taggert (John Ashton)–had together that made this franchise special.

12 Hot Films to See at Fantasia Film Festival 2024

Fans of Fantasia Film Festival will also say their shorts, like Anime no Bento 2024, are not worth missing! They offer a celebration of the arts in ways not every film will explore!

Fantasia Film Festival 2024Montreal City’s Fantasia Film Festival is the destination for all things wild in the pop culture movie scene. Although I love it because of all the Asian style imports, there’s always something unique from another country that’ll catch my interest.

Whether that’s with Les yeux d’Olga or Chainsaws Were Singing (Mootorsaed laulsid) due to what this work promises to entertain with, they help round out this top twelve must see picks! The former is a short which may borrow concepts from Bubba Ho-tep and the latter is a horror musical, a genre which doesn’t receive enough attention, and I hope both succeed!

Once a movie earns the label of a kaiju film, I’ll simply watch it, and here, it’s about a young girl who wants to know more about her late grandfather. He’s a model maker who’s worked in many monster movies, and as for how she gets teleported into the worlds that her grandpa made, well, that’s the mystery. I doubt this work will be like the Last Action Hero, but I’m very curious!

There’s No What IF, But Rather A Why It’s Best To Remain Forever Young

The best thing about IF is that it makes a lot of callbacks to familiar IPs without directly saying these imaginary friends are them.

Unless the film buff hasn’t seen the promotional material for IF, not everyone will know it’s short for an imaginary friend. And just why they have this nickname is that once they’ve lost their way, their connection with the person who created him/her/it can threaten its existence, and that being will fade away.

Just why this matters in John Krasinski‘s delightful film is that it’s about how to remain true, but yet understand why facing adversity matters.

In Ghost Keeper, You Are The Lord and Master Everyone Needs To Be Afraid Of!

It’s rare to offer a videogame where you can be the bad guy, and Ghost Keeper is perfect to be that creature to rule them all!

Ghost Keeper Title CardAlthough I was not aware of the video game, Ghost Master, back when it was released back in 2003, to wait more than twenty years for a sequel feels unusual. BLUM Entertainment and Quest Craft‘s upcoming Ghost Keeper looks better than the original (after looking at YouTube gameplays), and the fact it’s set in 19th-century Victorian England is one way to catch my interest! I also get the feeling it’s also vibing on the tropes Disney’s Haunted Mansion made famous.

Here, the idea is to play the role of a mighty leader of the unknown. Players get to order spirits around and hopefully scare the bejesus out of those humans who’ve decided to make the mansion you control their home. The problem is that a few of them know a thing or two about the occult, and there’s even what looks like a ghostbuster who can ruin a player’s day.

I rather like the idea to play the role of the “bad guy,” and in this sim, the question of whether other ghosts will obey is a story I always wanted to see happen. There’s been variations of this idea in cinema, but it hasn’t been explored very well or hasn’t come across my radar just yet.

The Garfield Movie, Just A Lazy Movie That Isn’t Feline Enough

Some long running franchises should be left alone, and others deserving of a continuation. But with The Garfield Movie, it seems the theatrical rights holders made the film just to hang on to this work for a little bit longer.

The Garfield Movie (2024)Honestly, the live-action CGI movies with Garfield are much better than this strangely titled film, which moves “the” word around. Instead of Garfield the Movie, it’s The Garfield Movie. It’s like someone at Sony Marketing was as lazy as this fat cat, and couldn’t think up another title.

Sadly, Chris Pratt cannot deliver everything I know this cat must be. He was okay in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, but here, there’s just no excuse. The tonal quality, lack of sarcasm and not even an ounce of grump could be heard. Lorenzo Music is the definitive voice, and the only worthy successors before this recast was Frank Welker and Bill Murray.

It’s Wild and Wacky with Invaders from Proxima B

Ward Roberts certainly knows everything about UFOs and it manifests is lots of fun ways in his third outing as a movie director. From shapechangers to fuzzy versions and even reptiles, the gambit is well covered in Invaders from Proxima B. As for himself, he plays a character whose time on the road as a musician prevents him from being the father that he needs to be. Some viewers will remember him from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., where he plays Hugo.

And I feel this work excellently showcases not only his comedic talent but also his skill as a director. I’m fairly certain I laughed at every bit he wanted to be hilarious. Viewers not only get treated to a cartoon style adventure but also enjoy the heartfelt payoff. What’s presented is a tale I always wanted the 80s sitcom ALF to end at. After a prologue inspired by Lilo & Stitch, what happens next is certainly expected and chuckle-worthy. When Steve the Alien meets Howie (Roberts) there’s some good natured chaos and eventually, this little fuzzy thing gets “adopted” by the family.
