Although I was not aware of the video game, Ghost Master, back when it was released back in 2003, to wait more than twenty years for a sequel feels unusual. BLUM Entertainment and Quest Craft‘s upcoming Ghost Keeper looks better than the original (after looking at YouTube gameplays), and the fact it’s set in 19th-century Victorian England is one way to catch my interest! I also get the feeling it’s also vibing on the tropes Disney’s Haunted Mansion made famous.
Here, the idea is to play the role of a mighty leader of the unknown. Players get to order spirits around and hopefully scare the bejesus out of those humans who’ve decided to make the mansion you control their home. The problem is that a few of them know a thing or two about the occult, and there’s even what looks like a ghostbuster who can ruin a player’s day.
I rather like the idea to play the role of the “bad guy,” and in this sim, the question of whether other ghosts will obey is a story I always wanted to see happen. There’s been variations of this idea in cinema, but it hasn’t been explored very well or hasn’t come across my radar just yet.
This game isn’t meant to use the latest in motion graphics or CGI design to look modern. There’s a retro feel to it that sort of works; the voice of the narrator may well be a cousin of the Crypt Keeper, and the animation is very old school, designed remind me of those early Tomb Raider games–or perhaps even recall Reboot, to which I feel has more of an influence since my one of my most episode is when Bob, Dot, Enzo and Frisket got caught in a video game which was a wonderful parody of Evil Dead!
I got similar vibes while watching the trailer. The wait will be long as this game isn’t set for release until 2025,
It’ll be great to start commanding a variety of ghosts, beasts, and demons just to wipe up those pesky humans; and since this is a sim, to know how to best rally them to be at their spookiest is perhaps the greatest challenge of them all! Strategy is important and I’m sure this cat and mouse game will lean more in the feline’s favour.
The great challenge will be in dealing with a Victorian-age version of the Ghostbusters and some group known as the Brotherhood. To take care of them won’t be easy, and until more details are revealed about whether I can create my own monstrosities, dealing with them won’t be easy.
