A Nerdy Christmas Shoppers Guide to Victoria, BC

This Nerdy Christmas Shoppers Guide is old, but updated to reflect moves and has a special page that’s even more updated.

Nerdy Christmas Shoppers GuideDecember is upon us and holiday shopping is in the air! Twelve days remain to find that special item for the nerd in the family and what I offer is a Nerdy Christmas Shoppers Guide to Victoria, BC. (updated Dec 2022).

This guide is not restricted to the season either. Everyone has a birthday, and if that collector must have more FUNKO Pop figures for that collection, going to EB Games is not the definitive place to be. Operations like Toys R’ Us and Walmart have their place for finding toys and current movie tie-in products, but let’s consider the local operations before going corporate.

For any other outlet that’s not listed, please submit by commenting and this guide will be updated and made its own permenant page, a Nerd’s Guide to Shopping on Vancouver Island, after the new year.

Japan Aquarium’s Christmas Tree Lights Powered by Eels

tobaaquarium4By James Robert Shaw (The Wind up Geek)

In the city of Toba in Mie Prefecture, the Toba Aquarium is running unusual Christmas displays. During the holidays visitors will have a chance to see a four metre Christmas tree made up of 1000 LED lights. The lights have a different power source provided by the aquarium’s electric eels. The LED lights remain a static green until one of the eels discharges electricity causing the lights to flicker a different colour. Eels discharge electricity when surprised or when stunning prey. Lighting time will be from 09:00-17:00 (9 am-5 pm).

Muggles Produce Harry Potter Christmas Trees To Rival that of Hogwarts’ Great Hall

harry-potter-great-hall-decorationBy James Robert Shaw (The Wind up Geek)

It’s Christmas time, that time of year with a magic all it’s own. But one doesn’t need to be a wizard to whip yourself up a Harry Potter Christmas. Two fans of the Harry Potter series of books, created by J.K. Rowling, have created the ultimate wizarding tree complete with Hogwarts’ Sorting Hat where an angel or star would be.

This first tree is designed by Hanah Lee Keirsey, owner of Keirsey Kreations of West Helena, Arkansas. Hanah made all of the ornaments, the Hogwarts house flags and the tree skirt herself.

10 Monster Movies to Haunt Christmas With

Some of us love a good monster movie to enjoy on that cold winter’s night.

A Christmas Carol DVD CoverTo hear those sleigh bells jingling, going ring ting tingling will certainly hail the start of the holiday, but just how often do you hear a boo during this season? Some of us love a good monster movie to enjoy on that cold winter’s night. To wait for that final ray of light to fade away is enough to signal it’s time to get some fright on!

Assembled here is a list of monster movies threatening the holiday season by tormenting unlucky mortals who come across their way. Sometimes the message is clear in these films: it’s to help unite divided families to fight against a common threat. In others, it’s to show how better a person can become when not isolated away from society.

For the rest, a good horror tale helps make communities stronger. Slasher films featuring a deranged serial killer is its own special category and they tend to dominate other holiday lists. Some of the films in this list have a lesson to end with, but not all of them do. Some movies are just made to simply entertain.

It’s a Noel Fielding Twisted Christmas

By James Robert Shaw (The Wind up Geek)

From the minds that performed the music of the Noel Fielding’s Luxury Comedy television series comes a new pull at the twisted Christmas cracker. Loose Tapestries whose songs include Luxury Comedy Theme and Surrounded By Shape Shifting Werewolves offer pockets full of mistletoe, a disco brussels sprout and running naked covered in goose fat in Can’t Wait for Christmas.

When it comes to weird and demented holiday tunes, Can’t Wait for Christmas ranks among past songs like Ricky Tomlinson’s Christmas My Arse, The Goodies’ Father Christmas Do Not Touch, and The Goons’ I’m Walking Backwards for Christmas. Britain certainly has a lot to answer for.

Loose Tapestries was formed in 2012. Their members are Noel Fielding (of The Mighty Boosh fame), Sergio Pizzorno (of band Kasabian), Ben Kealey, and Tim Carter.

Their album Loose Tapestries Presents the Luxury Comedy Tapes is available on MP3, streaming services, and iTunes.

Christmas is Hanging a Dying Vulcan on the Tree

StarTrekKhan1

Halloween hasn’t even arrived yet but already Hallmark has me thinking of Christmas, especially of one that will be nerdy and bright. And how can you not help getting all nerdy at Christmas with this Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan The Needs of the Many Ornament. This ornament shows Captain Kirk (William Shatner) and Mr.Spock (Leonard Nimoy) and depicts the scene from Wrath of Khan where Spock saves the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise at the cost of his own life. In addition you can press a button on this keepsake ornament to hear the film’s quote The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few…or the one.

You can purchase the Needs of the Many ornament through the Hallmark website by clicking here.

Maybe in 2016 Hallmark will create a Star Trek III: The Search for Spock ornament, preferably one where Spock is reborn after dying for everyone’s sins. It would make a great Christmas tree topper.
