When looking at the television schedules during the Yuletide season, the list of Christmas movies offered is very predictable. There will always be the same set of films or holiday specials to watch to get into the spirit. A few rarely get taken off programmming because it’s dated. It’s just tradition to offer them every year.

Try as I might to resist, there’s no denying these works, be it made for the big screen or small, are a must. Even though this list is based on what’s offered mid 2010, I’m sure a few might not get revisited again, but I’ll seek it out when I need a work to get me into the season.

Presented in no particular order are:

Christmas Movie Top Choice Home AloneHome Alone 2

If I had to choose between which one of the two films is the best, I feel the sequel is just a lot more fun and enduring. Kevin (Macaulay Culkin) is in a big city, and he does an amazing job of fending for himself.

The deeper feeling of isolation, a common theme in this series, feels more powerful. His mom loves this kid despite all his flaws. He befriends a homeless lady during this time, and just what they teach each other earns more sniffles than the previous, where that arc with Old Man Marley is nicely resolved.

Plus, how can anyone not like what Hector the Concierge (Tim Curry) had to endure? Even after successive watches, to see him deal with all the madness that ensues is still priceless.

“The Man Who Invented Christmas” may well change Post-Turkey Day Tradition in this Featurette

Now that Halloween is over, the next big international holiday is Christmas. Sorry America, but Thanksgiving Day does not count. To debut this film on Nov 24,. 2017 (the day after) will have some people flocking to theatres instead of shopping centers for a delightful film than deals from last year’s merchandise.

The Man Who Invented Christmas may well become the underdog for the season for those wanting a bit of cheery holiday humbug and an understanding of why this story is such a classic.

This movie directed by Bharat Nalluri and written by Susan Coyne looks at how A Christmas Carol came about. It has Dan Stevens (Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb) playing the role of Dickens, Christopher Plummer as Scrooge and Jonathan Pryce as John Dickens (the father).

This film will reveal shows how Dickens mixed real-life inspirations with his vivid imagination to conjure up unforgettable characters and a timeless tale, forever changing the holiday season into the celebration we know today.

This movie will debut in the UK, Dec 1st.

The Vintage Tempest’s Open Letter to Santa Claus

Dear Santa,

There’s not much I need this year. You helped set the wheels in motion to help deliver a few items from the list I made last year. I received Call of Cthulhu 7th Edition some months ago, but the score is seeing Pulp Cthulhu and the out of print Fall of Cthulhu Omnibus arrive before the big day! My dreams have been fulfilled.

Though, with virtual reality (VR) still being the talk of 2016, I still like to see how this technology will grow in the coming year. It leads my list of items I’d love to see under my tree.

Oculus Rift

While the jury is still out in deciding if VR is the future of entertainment, out of all the three contenders (HTC Vive and PlayStation VR being the other two) I’m placing my bets on this device to get my Matrix-style illusion on. The amount of varied software that’s soon to be offered is the main selling point for me. Of course, a fully decked out gaming computer from Alienware to ensure I can play Star Wars: Battlefront VR expansion pack will be great too!

Cheshire Cat Disappearing Coffee Mug (from Amazon)Santa

Thankfully, not every item in my wish list is not expensive. My coffee mug featuring this cat from Alice in Wonderland has the ink literally being worn out from repeated washings from other family members in the home who does not know how to treat a designer cup well — if there’s a version which layers a thick clear finish over it, I’d love to own this cup again.

Every time I drink from the mug, I can not help but grin back at the cat. He always comes back when the cup gets cold.
