MIND MGMT: The Psychic Espionage “Game” is doing very well in its first week since launching on Kickstarter. It is billed as a tense, paranoia-fueled game of deduction and second-guessing. It’s based on the NY Times Best Selling series from Matt Kindt, and it’s published by Dark Horse Comics. This board game is being published by Vancouver, BC based operation Off the Page Games.

After the product has been sent out to Kickstarter backers, it’s very likely to appear in select games stores near you.

The story is about Meru who has to deal with other strangeness in the likes of X-Files. Instead of aliens and ghosts, she’s dealing with spies, rogue agents and psy-ops. In what she finds, the trouble she gets in requires the help of others.

A Late (Un)Boxing Day Video: Digging into CMON’s Cthulhu, Death May Die

Cthulhu Death May Die
Available to purchase on Amazon USA or through your local game store through special order

The battle of the titans, or rather Elder Gods has begun! The question of which H.P. Lovecraft inspired tabletop board game is better needs to be asked. When Petersen Games and CMON are dealing out destruction in an unearthly scale, the challenge lays more in which sculpt is better. My money is with neither. Cthulhu is an unwieldy creation that’s hard to realize in any visual format; the author wrote:

A monster of vaguely anthropoid outline, but with an octopus-like head whose face was a mass of feelers, a scaly, rubbery-looking body, prodigious claws on hind and fore feet, and long, narrow wings behind.

Rebuilding Cars Wars from the Chassis on Up on Kickstarter & More!

Those thrilling car chases in Mad Max or Cannonball Run is getting a Steve Jackson Games‘ (SJG) rebuild of their classic game Car Wars. It’s on Kickstarter to help revv production up to a higher gear before it makes its reintroduction in the retail market. After more than a week since its launch, this miniature war game hit its goal of going into production and it’s about time it’s reimagined as my friends and I have played more than a decade ago.

So When Will Ankh: Gods of Egypt Kickstart?

CMON Announces Ankh Board GameBy Ed Sum
(The Vintage Tempest)

The news of a miniatures based board game set in Ancient Egypt has me over the moon, if not hovering by Ra (the sun), in anticipation of its eventual Kickstarter launch. The original press release suggested it will launch in late 2019, but with everyone in Christmas mode, I don’t think the listing will appear until early next year.

The images of the demo on Twitter (see below) is merely a tease. After receiving CMON’s Cthulhu: Death May Die board game last week, the super high quality of the minis is as I expected. The Egyptian fanatic in me is hopping! An unboxing video will be coming soon (update: it’s become a review during my editing–the video is here).

The quality of the scale model pieces are amazing and the painter in me can’t wait to give colour to not only the game I currently have but also with adding to my collection. Technically, they’re not usable with other games like Games Workshop’s Warhammer series. Sadly, the Khemri was removed from the game and are deeply buried under the sand. The same can be said for Reaper Miniatures’ Warlord which no longer sees updates.

It’s not ank-hpected (had to say it) that enthusiasts of any game product in this setting desire a quality game, and I can’t wait for CMON to launch this project. I’m sure they are still fine tuning the 3D models for mass production, hence the delay.

In a month, Fan Expo Vancouver will take place, celebrating all things pop culture on October 12-14, 2018. Instead of The CW heavy focus from the previous two years, this take feels a touch Halloween-centric. Just announced is the original teenage vampire slayer, Buffy aka Kristy Swanson! Just as equally is Ron Perlman, the original cinematic Hellboy. Other media guests include Jason Momoa (Stargate: Atlantis), Lou Ferrigno (Incredible Hulk), Pom Klementieff (Guardians of the Galaxy), Michael Cudlitz (Walking Dead), Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica), Jaleel White (Sonic the Hedgehog) and Jason David Frank (Power Rangers).

In the voice talent front, Batman is coming! Kevin Conroy is the voice of the beloved hero in Batman: The Animated Series, and to name a few, joining him is Jeremy Shada (Adventure Time) and Charles Martinet (Super Mario). In the comic book world, Dave Dorman Chad Hardin and Mike Henderson are the featured guests!

Ruby Roundup! An Organic Card Game on Kickstarter!

Ruby Roundup Card Game Box DesignBy Ed Sum
(The Vintage Tempest)

Dan Spiller is a name in the Downtown Victoria gaming and nerd scene. He has high hopes Ruby Roundup! a game he made will set a new standard for what card games can offer to gamers and it is on Kickstarter for those who want to help bring it to a larger market. He’s the creative mind behind the newly minted, Always Gold Games. It’s one part board game and two parts random draw. It’s been in development for a few years, and the goal is to accumulate treasure to win. It’s kind of like the days of hunting for gold; stake your claim and dig up as much mineral as you can to get a lot of money. This product had been getting test demos at local events, and according to this game designer, it is not like other card games currently in the market.

His experience in development stems from not only his passion for this subculture but also in being a lifelong enthusiast. He is one of the principal operators of Yellowjacket Games and Comics here in this city. This store is one of five hubs in the capital region to host Magic the Gathering events. When the staff is just as enthusiastic playing these games as they are in making them, it’s a good sign anything they like to create will have that passion behind it too!
