From Academy Award-winner and Director John Bruno—the visual effects mastermind behind Avatar, Terminator 2, and original Poltergeist movie—comes his first graphic novel, Navigator! This idea is based on an original tale he made with Steve Burg and Ron Thornton.

The screenplay is by John Bruno and William Wisher (Terminator 2). Illustrating this epic space adventure is Jordi Armengol who, with his atmospheric work, helps bring the cosmos to life.

An alien navigator, captured in battle on Jupiter’s fourth moon, Europa, seeks sanctuary. In return, the alien will provide his advanced technology to help defend humankind from the alien force that enslaved him and has come to destroy us. In this backdrop is a story of love and reconciliation between a young Marine officer—placed in command of Earth’s forces—his estranged wife, and Amy, the daughter he’s never met.

Victoria, BC’s Ultimate Hobby and Toy Fair is Back for 2022!

Victoria’s Ultimate Hobby and Toy Fair returns May 15 and 16th! It’s a shopping meccha for all things used and new!

March 15 & 16 From 9 to 3pm

Victoria‘s Ultimate Hobby and Toy Fair is finally back! After nearly two long years of being on hiatus because of the pandemic, this event now has the go-ahead to resume. The organisers are recommending that people still wear masks because of the concentrated space, but otherwise those who opt not to won’t be turned away.

This event is run by the staff of Cherry Bomb toys is a mini festival of all things pop culture one could buy or admire. Local clubs (VicLUG will be in attendance and unconfirmed is the 501st Legion), vendors and private sellers are rotating each day. Whether people are visiting to browse or pick up something for their collection, it’s a show many locals are anxious to see. Some folks even like attending while in cosplay!

Maika: The Girl From Another Galaxy is a fun Vietnamese movie that will be very familiar to anyone who knows Steven Spielberg’s work. It’s not meant to be thoughtful, but instead has fun with the boy meets alien girl concept. It’s also considered this country’s first family friendly created content that’s playing at specific film festivals before getting a wider release.

The story focuses on how Hung (Phu Truong) is having a rough go at life. He’s lost his mom to cancer and although that was over a year ago, his father doesn’t understand his boy. He tries to make ends meet to support them both. But he’s hardly ever around for the boy. While out on his own, Hung meets Maika (Diep Anh Chu), an alien who needs help. His frenemy, Beo (Tin Tin) and his older brother serves as comedic relief. The former is a chubby tyke who almost steals the movie. He’s clearly having fun playing up that spoiled child role–a stark contrast to who Hung is.

It’s Frantically Fun with Turbo Overkill Early Access in Review

What would you do if you find that everyone in your city has been turned into violent half-cybernetic war machines, bent on taking over the world for a malicious artificial intelligence called Syn? As a cyborg with a chainsaw hidden in your leg and missile launchers up your sleeves, you’ll fight your way through the streets and take back the city. Blasting your way through hordes of enemies to put an end to the AI’s plans once and for all!

Turbo Overkill is simply a love letter to the 90s. It’s a first-person shooter that mimics what computers were capable of back in the early days of 3D accelerator cards while adding some modern touches like reflections and proper environmental lighting. The level design, brightly glowing power-ups, colour-coded keys, jump pads, and a huge variety of ways to blow up your enemies just screams mid-90s shooter. Playing this early access game over the last few days really brings back memories of playing Quake, Unreal tournament and Duke Nukem 3D for the first time.

Behind the Mac and Magic: The Mystery of Skywalker Sound is Free to View

Available to watch on Apple’s YouTube channel is Behind the Mac: Skywalker Sound. This mini-documentary released today in honour of Star Wars Day goes behind the scenes in what goes on in at this studio. We see more than how some of those magical sounds are made. We get insights into an aspect of the movie-making process that makes the filimed footage come alive.

Additionally, we see the technology used to fine tune the raw vibrations to what audiences hear in that film! Some of it may seem surprisingly low tech, but for the high, it’s no surprise Apples are used. Logic Pro is the software of choice at this studio. And from what I can notice, the servers look like they’re Apple G5s!

This video is a terrific watch to see how sound and image all gets put together. It may even perhaps inspire those who want to work in the movie-making industry to take up a position as a foley artist. Although some may argue Skywalker Sound desire to be fully digital will kill this position (please read my review of Actors of Sound here), I think this profession will be always be around in one form or another. Behind the Mac: Skywalker Sound nicely tells us why we need people who take ‘psycho acoustics’ seriously. They are the folks who’ll be out there in the natural and synthetic environment to record the next big thing. Who knows, maybe that sonic boom will be put in the next movie we’re about to see on the big screen.

What “A Tear in the Sky” tries to discover is if energy can be detected using current Earth technology.

The Navy often encounters Unidentified Aerial Phenomena and whether they cause A Tear in the Sky depends on who you ask. But as for what powers these UFOs, nobody knows. This latest documentary tries to figure out if they are using wormholes, micro black holes, cold fusion, or some unknown technology to travel about. What this work hosted by Caroline Cory tries to discover is if energy can be observed/detected using current Earth technology.

Whatever kind of propulsion is used, it’s bound to be light years ahead of what NASA and private enterprises are trying to craft. I believe it’s cold fusion after I finished watching. Michio Kaku, even leans towards it too, and I’ll gladly watch anything this physicist appears in!
