A NFB Spotlight at the 2016 Vancouver International Film Festival

The National Film Board of Canada is coming to the Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF) with hometown premieres and three fantastic animated short-length movies which explore the human condition.

Ann Marie Fleming’s Window Horses: The Poetic Persian Epiphany of Rosie Ming is going to be the highlight. This feature animation is about the love of family, poetry and history. There’s a blend of Asian and Middle Eastern character designs in this product which offers great contrasts. When the heroine has over-protective Chinese grandparents concerned about her well-being, who is in the right? Will cultures clash? The style looks very colourful and wonderful, and a preview will hopefully be coming soon here at Otakunoculture.com

The voice talents in this film include Sandra Oh, Ellen Page, Don McKellar, Shohreh Aghdashloo and Nancy Kwan.

Cataloguing Canada Post’s Most Haunted Stamps

By Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)

Canada is home to many haunted locations. Some are world-famous, like the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel in Alberta, and others are more well known locally. On Vancouver Island, the site where the Cherry Bank Hotel once stood in Victoria, BC is one and Beban House located in Nanaimo, BC is another. For Canada Post, they have chosen to acknowledge many locations nationwide.

Their upcoming stamp set acknowledges mostly Eastern Canada and hopefully the year after, they can honour the West.

With Halloween around the corner, ’tis the season to get the spooks on all letter mail. In honour of this occasion, Otakunoculture presents a catalogue of previous spotlighted locations (complete with links to each scary story):

Ed’s Pokémon Go Journals – Is The Buddy System Enough to Sate the Sweet Tooth?

Pokémon GO Card

By Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)

Despite the fact Pokémon GO still has bugs to fix, including getting a working tracker available to everyone and fixing a bug whenever gyms are challenged, and a new feature is being offered in this week’s update — I like to see more options for players to obtain candy and coins.

The latest version is said to be rolling out this week, but as for when — that’s anybody’s guess. I do not like the idea of downloading from an unofficial source, and already “those cheaters” have a heads up. The good thing out of the new version is that rooted phones (hacked for whatever reason) will not let gamers play. I understand the reason for this security check, but it will not stop the committed. Usually the roll out starts with West Coast of North America, starting with the United States, before other countries see it in their respective Google Play or Apple Store. Some are impatient and others just want it now, since the Buddy System solves one great problem: to get enough power-ups (candies) to evolve a particular Pokémon when they are hard to find. But adding a new feature will not fix a broken and unbalanced game.

Is it the Wild Life in this CGI Take on Robinson Crusoe?

Don’t ask me why, but after seeing The Wild Life, a computer animated spin on the Robinson Crusoe legend, I now have the Talking Heads‘ 1986 hit song stuck in my head. This band’s track expounds a different kind of adventure of a human sexual variety while the theatrical film takes its inspiration from Madagascar.

One question pops up though: just how the heck did Mak the parrot, Rosie the warthog, Carmello the chameleon, Pango the pangolin, Epi the echidna, Scrubby the goat and Kiki the kingfisher end up on a desolate and mostly rocky island in the middle of nowhere anyways? My guess is that they got washed up after some storm picked them up from their natural habitats and forced them here. They more or less live a contented life until a human comes ashore.

Royal Canadian Mint to Finish Releasing a Trilogy of Haunted Canada Coins

154468_hero-185By Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)

The Royal Canadian Mint‘s Haunted Canada series of coins is coming to an end. September 8th marked the release of this third and final coin in the series. To own all three will certainly be a delight for paranormal enthusiasts and coin collectors alike! As viewers gaze upon this lenticular image, it will transform from a pretty spirit to a shrieking one! Artist Susanna Blunt crafted this ethereal image.

While the television series Creepy Canada explored close to 100 famously haunted places all around this country, not all of them are all that well-known worldwide. If I was to choose the most famous, I have to say the Ghosts of Fort Henry (Fort Henry, Ontario), the Bell Island spirit (Newfoundland/Labrador) and the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel (Banff, Alberta) are the best known.

From this list, the Mint is recognizing Bell Island this year. Last year had Vancouver’s Headless Horseman (2015) and the year before the Ghost Bride (2014). The single coins are more or less sold out, but sets, which includes a series of stamps from Canada Post shows that both companies love their spooks!

This year’s release is very promising:

On Newfoundland and Labrador’s Bell Island, a restless female spirit is said to haunt the marshes near Dobbin’s Garden. She appears in two forms: one, as a beautiful woman dressed in white; the other, as a frightening old woman. Men who have dared to walk through the area have gone missing for days, only to emerge unaware of any passage of time. But what they do remember is the sudden apparition of a grotesque old woman moving toward them, pushing them to the ground, while the smell of death hangs in the air.

Hopefully Canada Post will continue their run since the list of haunted houses is enough to make into a book. To see this company continue the love for the paranormal, I’m willing to bet these spirits are sure to “stick around.”
