Atari’s Asteroids is Reloaded and Caught Between A Rock and a Hard Place

Anyone who has played the original Asteroids will find Asteroids Recharged settings for button mashing very unnatural.

Asteroids Recharged

Available for Nintendo Switch, PS4/5 and Xbox

Anyone who has played the original Asteroids will find Asteroids Recharged settings for button mashing very unnatural. That’s because long time players of this game have grown accustomed to pushing buttons to aim and steer the spacecraft to shoot away these rocks in space. Even with the many versions available on the Internet (sometimes called Atari Reloaded), I’m more inclined to load up those takes than to play the official product.

My skill with the original and Atari 2600 lets me get farther. To put this game on a stick is odd. I need my buttons! At least some of them can be assignable through system preferences. But having a reconfigured setup plays better on an arcade fight stick. Also, I’d require a cabinet sized spread than a small one, which I picked up on Amazon to test if my theory is true, and I’ve lasted longer.

Atari & Adamavision’s Black Widow Recharged is Hard!

I’m still wishing for that sensitivity option to be included in Black Widow Recharged. It’d make moving the spider less twitchy when I’m not wanting it to speed its way to death.

Adamvision and Sneaky Box Studios are nicely sticking to a style for their re-imagined Atari games. Black Widow Recharged reuses a lot of elements from Centipede Recharged and this consistency is great. I love the fact these two games are designed to be companion pieces to one another. The protagonist the player controls has to deal with various insect threats. Unfortunately, this also means players only have one life to get the pests in control. In this game’s case, once that spider is touched by a wasp, you’re dead.

Thankfully, you have a rather fast machine gun spit to turns these bugs into a dollar sign. They don’t buy anything (it’d be cool if it did like in Missile Command). The power-ups (with most ported over from the Centipede game) don’t appear fast enough, and players have to be very careful with the dual stick controller setup to keep on evading and shooting them down. There’s no movement sensitivity adjustment option in this game, whereas Centipede Recharged did. Hopefully, this can be resolved in an update. It’s only a matter of mental training to avoid moving your avatar to the target like a moth to a flame when it should be the other hand rotating the shooter to its intended target.

More than a Retro Ode to Centipede Recharged

Centipede Recharged is massively updated and locally produced. Vancouver, BC based Adamvision Studios is the brains behind this product

Officially, there aren’t a lot of Atari “Recharged” titles. To my knowledge, there’s Battlezone VR, Tempest 4K, Missile Command and now Centipede. There’s a few unofficial updates and they don’t hold a candle to the classics unless the company is involved. There is Asteroids, and I’m still searching for a modern remake of Frogger, Pong, Pole Position and Breakout.

Centipede Recharged is available for the Atari VCS, Nintendo Switch, Steam (PC), Xbox Series X/S, Epic and PS4/5. Aside from blasting apart bugs and ranking up the global leaderboard, this highly addictive game will keep players shooting, bug wranglers cackling and game players shaking a fist at those scorpions. The fleas rain down the screen like they are part of The Matrix far more often when players last longer than ten minutes.

Selling Your Soul to Dark Deity!

I enjoyed the time I spent playing Dark Deity and I see a lot of potential in this game. It has a solid foundation and it’s clear that with a little more polish, this game can truly shine.

In the Kingdom of Delian, King Varic is waging a reckless war to avenge the death of his father. However, things are not going well for the demanding ruler. To bolster his forces, he forcibly conscripts every student in his military academy directly into the army. This is where Irving and his companions come into the story. These trainees are pulled into a war they aren’t fully prepared for, and along the way are drawn into an even greater conflict that could upend their entire world.

This is the setup for Dark Deity, a new Strategy Role Playing game developed by Sword & Axe LLC and published by Freedom Games. It’s now available after a successful campaign on Kickstarter in the Summer of 2020.

Honk on Board for Videogaming Quackery in Mighty Goose!

Mighty Goose for Nintendo Switch - Nintendo Game DetailsBy Ed Sum
(The Vintage Tempest)

Available for the PC via Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.

Nintendo Switch version was evaluated

Some run-and-gun games have a devoted following since the first title of a franchise appeared in arcades decades ago. To offer something fresh is even tougher, and I believe Mighty Goose has the makings of something new in its retro-style and Mario-like gameplay. You collect coins so you can buy power-ups or gear to make surviving to the end of the level easier.

I was surprised I could backtrack to collect items that I sometimes missed grabbing on the first run. Sometimes it’s better to save that box of bandaids to heal up after clearing a screen! As with many games in this sub-genre, it’s easy to get hurt. Having quick reflexes helps to reach the tougher levels of this game.
