This Weekend is Fan Expo Vancouver 2020! What to Do, What to See…

Fan Expo Vancouver is upon us, and the fun does not have to be about meeting the big name guests. While it’s terrific we have returning favourites like Bruce Campbell and select cast from The Flash, the diversity is broad. We have representatives from fond favourites like X-Files, Battlestar Galactica, Walking Dead and the Office. I’m hoping for more representation from Stargate SG1 (one year, they got two names from Universe, but I’m holding out for the big five uniting here instead of the very pricey GateCon).

This event takes place after Valentines Day and continues on B.C. Family Day. The change in dates may seem odd to some, but the shift is done on purpose get other guests normally not available to them–and compete with the Seattle event. Are they returning to form since February was when this event first debuted? It’s hard to say, but I’ve been a regular attendee for some years now and will continue to monitor.

The 2020 Pacific Northwest Convention Scene & How Star Trek Plays into It…

In the Pacific Northwest, if the organizers behind the coming “comic book” conventions for next year are not careful, the focus on Star Trek will not be as exciting as it ought to be.

In the Pacific Northwest, if the organizers behind the coming “comic book” conventions for next year are not careful, the focus on Star Trek will not be as exciting as it ought to be. The 90s was ripe for the scene because everyone loved watching The Next Generation. Appearances of talents from this franchise at a comic book store or science fiction convention was a guaranteed draw. I met a handful of these talents before charging for autographs became a mandatory thing.

CBS All Access Picard is a dream come true. It’s a continuation of The Next Generation and will bring the cast back (or feature other Admirals, past villains and etc) as easy as writing a time travel episode.

Pulp Action Hero Brendan Fraser is Coming to Fan Expo Vancouver 2020!

George of the Jungle… er, Dudley–let’s just say Brendan Fraser is coming to Fan Expo Vancouver 2020 (Feb 15-17)! This versatile actor was forever immortalized as Rick O’Connell in The Mummy trilogy (1999-2008) but for followers of this actor, he got his start with many comedic roles. His most notable were playing similar adorable but goofy Jay Ward animated characters–the aforementioned parody of Tarzan and Dudley Do-Right, to which some feel is completely bang on.

Gods and Monsters (1998) proved he could do serious drama, and from there he appeared in The Quiet American (2002) and Crash (2004). He’s at home in either environment. While recognized for his many pulp action hero roles for his dashing good lucks at his prime, there is more to him than meets the eye.

Highlights to Reel In at Fan Expo Vancouver 2019

Nearly half the cast appeared in the 2019 edition of Fan Expo Vancouver, and that was a huge thrill for me!

Fan Expo Vancouver (March 1-3, 2019) is returning to form, and that’s to offer a mecca of delights to kickstart the first weekend of March with. This includes a larger than usual list of talents behind many a fan favourite comic book, television show or internet streaming channel. There are some video games, especially with Sony spotlighting the latest for the PS4, and this area never disappoints. With everything announced, I feel two days must be spent, minimum.

Ed Sum with Genie I’m very excited to see Arthur Adams on the list. I can finally get my Longshot trade paperback autographed! Pamela Anderson is not a regular at pop culture conventions and to hear she’s appearing is just as wonderful. I can “dream of” other talents I would love to see in the future if what’s highlighted here is a sign of who this show wants to bring to Vancouver, BC!

Folks familiar enough with this event will find plenty to do over the three-day event. A tentative schedule is online for folks to plan.

This event will take place in the West Building, and like last year is to have everything put into one huge space instead of spreading out. No explanation is given. On the plus side: everything is within easy reach. On the negative side: noise levels and potential overcrowding. My wish for the future is to have it take up an entire building.

Fan Expo Vancouver 2018 Report

Anyone who enjoys reading comic books, meeting celebrities and shopping for geeky novelties will flock to events like Fan Expo Vancouver (FXV), no matter when or where it takes place. This year, they moved from their November slot to October mid-month, from Oct 12-14th and scaled it back. Those who have frequently been to this annual event noticed.

Instead of taking up two floors of the West Vancouver Convention Center, everything was packed into one space. As I have reported in previous articles, the East Building has SHUX, a closed to the public board game event. I could approach check-in and look yonder to know the layout was similar to FXV’s. And that’s to pack everything into one space instead of spreading it out. This event probably took up three-quarters of the main floor. On the map, the area dedicated to panels and sellers were smaller and I was glad to know I was not missing anything special. Attendees to this event were not here to shop, but rather play demos and new games; I could not spot card games like Magic the Gathering.

If I had to pick between two events the same weekend, my money is on Fan Expo.

A Survivor’s Guide to Fan Expo Vancouver 2018, SHUX & Beyond

This weekend, Fan Expo Vancouver and SHUX 2018 will be taking place at the Vancouver Convention Center, and the venue is going to be super packed! Finding parking will no doubt be a nightmare for those coming in on the day of, but for those who have their hotels booked, the hope is that they have enough space to accommodate the influx of fandom to the harbour. For those coming into the former event new, the following advice is offered:

For FEV: The lower level is the exhibition space. Level one (ground floor) and two will host panels, and if past experience is any indication, the escalators are one way only. People bouncing back and forth floors will have to exit the venue to enter by the west side, not east. Plenty of dining options exist on the east side.
