[Fan Expo Vancouver] Rue Morgue Magazine’s Festival of Fear Spotlighted!

By Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)

Rue Morgue Magazine’s Festival of Fear, Westcoast edition is set to take up most of the stage at Fan Expo Vancouver 2014. Last year saw the première of Death Do Us Part, a horror film that is very similar to A Little Bit Zombie in theme — where wedding bell jitters can spell doom.

This year’s spotlight will be on WolfCop, a tale of a police officer who ends up with lycanthropy. And just which kind of masters he can end up serving will become the big question of the day. This movie has the potential to make it big in the cult film market, and the filmmakers will be on hand to answer questions along with other guests to fuel the fire for what can be a wonderfully horrific weekend.

Canadians can Howl at the Moon for Crowdfunding Wolfcop’s World Premiere

By Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)

Wolfcop Poster

Fans of horror can howl at the moon to help bring Wolfcop to theatres. For now, it’s set to make its presence at Fan Expo Vancouver, April 18th to 20th, with sneak previews from parts of the movie. Director Lowell Dean (13 Eerie), Makeup FX artist Emersen Ziffle (Curse of Chucky) and Wolfcop actor Leo Fafard (Hungry Hills, I ♥ Regina) will be on site to answer any burning questions fans may have for this film, and to strike a few poses in between! This will also be the first chance for fans to purchase the golden ticket – a guaranteed seat to see this film when it makes its theatrical premiere, which is still to be determined.

Special “transformations” (a panel discussion) will take place April 18 6pm -7pm; April 19 1-2PM and April 20 1-2 pm during this show. This wolf will trot on over to Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo and Fan Expo Regina next before it hits select theatres in Canada on June 6, 2014.

An Indiegogo campaign will then follow to help build awareness for this film as it makes its globe-trotting debut at film festivals in the coming months.

Details are still forthcoming for US distribution. But interest has been high and it should get a distributor in May!

Fan Expo Vancouver has two after parties taking place on Saturday night, April 19th, each starting at the same time, at 9pm. The official FEV party will take place at Vistas 360 at the top of the Renaissance Vancouver Harbourside Hotel, with a bar and perhaps some catering, but very little information have been released about this show. Updates will occur as Otaku no Culture receives them.

Bruce Campbell hits Fan Expo Vancouver!

By Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)

Bruce Campbell

Groovy will be one of the many words used by fans to describe their feelings about the first guest announcement from Fan Expo Vancouver. Seminal actor, Bruce Campbell is a fan favourite in the convention scene and he should be appearing for all three days, giving some fans more than just a little sugar.

Although he does not attend many shows these days, to see Brisco County Jr. return to the Pacific Northwest will no doubt be wonderfully fun! I vividly recall discovering this talented man through this television series than with Evil Dead. I even caught a very little known film, Goldrush: A Real Life Alaskan Adventure where he was remarkably docile. He was not the atypical smarmy character that he’s well-known for in his movie roles.

And to go see him again will be a pleasure. I attended a book signing from over a decade ago in Vancouver where I had a chance to meet the man. The crowds were not as big back then, but at Fan Expo Vancouver, people should be warned that lineups will no doubt be huge, if not bigger than last year.

With this show now going into its third year and that Rue Morgue Magazine may be involved with bringing Campbell to Vancouver under its mini show, Festival of Fear, this actor will no doubt be a busy man during this show. Maybe during his panel, he can definitively answer if Bubba Nosferatu: Curse of the She-Vampires will happen or not.

But maybe the bigger talk that’s going on is in addressing how the Evil Dead reboot is going to continue. The sequence after this new film’s end credits revealed that the original Ash is kicking somewhere around in that crazy multi-verse. One explanation has been offered, but maybe during Fan Expo, Campbell may shed more light about what’s to come next.

Dissecting Fan Expo Vancouver 2013

The headliner for this year’s Fan Expo Vancouver was Stan Lee.

Expectations were very high by fans to see if the organizers could successfully pull off Fan Expo Vancouver for a second year. Problems were abound in its first year because nobody from the East Coast team knew what the West Coast interest would be like. The major complaint heard from the grapevine, especially on Facebook, was with the lineups. At least that looked better managed in this event’s second year. More signage could have helped direct traffic and one out of the many problems that still needs to be addressed is with hallway congestion. If that issue is not enough, detractors say Fan Expo is a form of Creation Con, a style of organization where the show is designed to take every penny out of a fan’s pocket, and true fan-run conventions are few and far-between.

At least the die-hard masses tends to ignore the naysayers and find enjoyment in everything that Fan Expo celebrates: pop culture.

This year, the show took over three ballrooms at the Vancouver Convention Center’s West Wing and it stretched out to the conference rooms on the second level. The exhibit hall was organized to have dealers for one-third of the space, exhibitors (like LEGO and Sony Playstation) in the middle and displays from special organizations at the end, near the loading docks.
