Back when Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles exploded onto the comic book scene, interest in anthropomorphic animal heroes took off too! Those were the days, and not everyone caught on to the other titles trying to ride that craze. One such title that slipped past some readers was Adolescent Radioactive Black Belt Hamsters, and it built its own special following. Now, Dynamite Comics is offering a limited-time Kickstarter campaign for the first comprehensive reprint of the series created by Don Chin.

At the time of writing, this celebration and crowdfunding opportunity is live, and fans are encouraged to lock in their pledges to secure their hauls!

From the Press Release:

Don Chin’s creation rose above the avalanche of upstarts during what comics historians refer to as the “black and white boom,” when the accessibility of creation, printing, and distribution of comics provided a platform for the first major legion of independent creators. Like their reptile cousins, the Hamsters developed a passionate following, continuing their adventures across over 20 issues over four fabulous decades.

Now, the historic 40th anniversary of these heroic hamsters captures all of those classic adventures in two meticulously remastered tomes. Fans can opt for their preferred formats, from paperbacks and hardcovers to a sleek slipcase, or signed and remarqued editions by Chin himself.

Volume 1 includes:

  • Adolescent Radioactive Black Belt Hamsters (1986) #1-9
  • Adolescent Radioactive Black Belt Hamsters: Escape from New York
  • Clint: Hamster Triumphant #1-2

Volume 2 includes:

  • Adolescent Radioactive Black Belt Hamsters 3-D #1-4
  • Adolescent Radioactive Black Belt Hamsters Massacre the Japanese Invasion
  • Adolescent Radioactive Black Belt Hamsters: The Lost Treasures
  • Adolescent Radioactive Black Belt Hamsters (2008) #1-4

Each book comes out to over 300 pages of martial arts mayhem and hectic hamsterdom. Of particular note, the second book kicks off with unforgettable 3D comics that pushed the boundaries of comics storytelling. To complete the experience, a copy of 3D glasses is included with the books so fans can fully enjoy this experience.

In addition to the reprint books, fans can opt for extra Kickstarter goodies, including a limited facsimile edition of the first issue, one-of-one character sketches by fan-favourite artist Ken Haeser, and more.

From Nostalgia to Grit: Racer X and Speed Racer Reignite the Track

Racer X and Speed Racer return in a bold comic reboot, blending high-octane action with emotional depth, stunning art, and a shared universe in the making.

Mad Cave

Racer X and Speed Racer are back on track to rejuvenate an age-old franchise that not every anime fan may remember. Sure, the Wachowski Brothers (as they were known then) gave us a live-action version, but not everyone was exactly heading to theatres for it. That film was praised for its wildly colourful, hyper-stylized visuals, though its faithfulness to Tatsuo Yoshida’s original creation is debatable.

I loved it for those visuals alone—it’s a surreal fusion of anime and pop-art sensibility that only this team of filmmakers could dream up. And that hubba-hubba in the trailers? Well….

The new comics take a more grounded approach, which feels like the perfect evolution. Both stories explore the emotional and moral engines driving their heroes, especially the bond between Speed and Rex. Rather than just focusing on life in the fast lane, they bring heart, regret, and family legacy to the forefront.

Beyond Diamond Previews: Tracking Comic Releases in a Split Distribution World

Tracking Comic Releases is really hard these days for those readers with a broad range of tastes. What we offer here is a guide in how to navigate this now complex world.

Tracking Comic ReleasesNow that the dust has settled after Diamond Comic Distributors filed for bankruptcy last year, tracking comic releases, especially for new material, has become a challenge. To cut costs, they have trimmed their once-massive catalog and moved it entirely to digital.

Flipping through hundreds of pages of ads and solicits was never perfect, but at least it was centralized. Then came the Great Comic Distributor Breakup: DC left Diamond for Lunar Distribution, Marvel teamed up with Penguin Random House Comics, and several indie publishers found new homes elsewhere. Now, tracking releases feels like trying to collect all the Infinity Stones.

I’m not about to miss anything tied to Disney’s Stitch and Gargoyles, kaiju rampages, or Cthulhu’s tentacled reach. Even the occasional DC or Marvel hook can pull me in. Thankfully, I’m on a few key retailer mailing lists. For the rest, I’ve developed a system to keep tabs on what’s coming out and where to order it—one worth sharing.

Want to see what’s shipping this week — from everyone? These sites have you covered:

Social Media Sleuthing

Creators love to tease upcoming projects when you go talk to them at conventions. Next is X/Twitter, Bluesky, Instagram, and TikTok. Sometimes these hints drop months before official solicits and when certain talents do the tour, although they can’t disclose specific details, one can at least learn when these titles will tentatively drop.

Don’t Forget the Digital Shelves

Platforms like ComiXology, GlobalComix, and crowdfunding hubs like Zoop aren’t just for buying comics. They can also tip you off to what’s headed for print in the future. We’ve covered a platform launch, like Crunchyroll’s. Even Manga Mavericks has their own service planned.

US Tariff Strikes Again: Now Even Your Fandom Purchases From Afar Comes With Baggage

The US tariff isn’t just hurting American fans—it’s setting a trend. Countries like Canada, Japan, and the U.K. may soon follow, making global fandom a lot more expensive.

us tariff pac-man is evilIntro:
How US Tariff Changes Are Hurting Fandoms

Collectors of imported goods are being forced to swallow a bitter pill. While scrolling social media late one night, I saw a post: “Had someone cancel a $1,000 order on eBay today due to a ‘tariff tax.’ Is that a thing now?” (image posted below). Curious, I checked the responses and did further research. From Cbc.ca, an executive order from the White House now requires all shipments under $800 to be taxed, effectively killing the de minimis exemption that once allowed low-value imports duty-free. What seems like a simple policy shift could become one of the biggest shakeups fandom collectors have faced in years.

As bad as this is for U.S. buyers, the ripple effects could be worse. If Canada adopts a matching policy, then incoming shipments from the U.S. could be hit too. Thankfully, in-store purchases remain unaffected—but for online shoppers, it feels like being stomped by Godzilla.

With Nib + Ink Fest 2025, It’s Not Too Late To Participate!

Independent artists who love drawing have a new event to showcase their work at Nib + Ink Fest 2025.

Nib + Ink Fest It’s not too late to enjoy the online Nib + Ink Fest 2025! This virtual event offers to fans of sequential art an exposure to talents around the country, if not the world. And there’s even a marketplace to support these new up and comers in the indie / web-comic scene. This month-long event offers 145+ comics to consider and there’s ten days left.

Based on what I’ve checked out so far looks promising. It’s like going to a local comic arts festival. The only difference with this one is that there are no limits to who can exhibit, and what this event promises is more independence in the art scene. Besides offering newcomers a chance to review their portfolios with representatives online, there are also workshops to take part in. All attendees need is a microphone and webcam to fully take part.

From the Press Release:

The inaugural Nib + Ink Fest of 2025 is a collaborative effort of volunteers from several teams from the NIF Committee of the Cartoonist Cooperative, working in partnership with multiple Co-op committees and our Co-op membership to bring you this month-long, online comics event. This event wouldn’t be what it is without the unique sets of strengths and skills that each of our contributors brings to the committee and the many hours of work they put in to bring it to life.
