In a month, Fan Expo Vancouver will take place, celebrating all things pop culture on October 12-14, 2018. Instead of The CW heavy focus from the previous two years, this take feels a touch Halloween-centric. Just announced is the original teenage vampire slayer, Buffy aka Kristy Swanson! Just as equally is Ron Perlman, the original cinematic Hellboy. Other media guests include Jason Momoa (Stargate: Atlantis), Lou Ferrigno (Incredible Hulk), Pom Klementieff (Guardians of the Galaxy), Michael Cudlitz (Walking Dead), Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica), Jaleel White (Sonic the Hedgehog) and Jason David Frank (Power Rangers).

In the voice talent front, Batman is coming! Kevin Conroy is the voice of the beloved hero in Batman: The Animated Series, and to name a few, joining him is Jeremy Shada (Adventure Time) and Charles Martinet (Super Mario). In the comic book world, Dave Dorman Chad Hardin and Mike Henderson are the featured guests!

Reflections on Fan Expo Vancouver 2017

215d2-fanexpovancouverBy Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)

The variety of nerdy interests represented at Fan Expo Vancouver every year will differ. They have certainly become the crossroads of where all kinds of pop culture can converge, hence the X in their #FXV hashtag. While previous shows may feel more jam-packed than recent, this year’s event only affirms what I suspected from 2016 — this local event is getting connected with various television productions which film around the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. This event is settling into a groove most will approve and I can only imagine it will get better. Although years away, I’m sure the organizers will have something grand planned when year ten hits. But that’s four years away.

This festival moved from April to November two years ago, making the expense of staying at hotels a touch better during the offseason and offering to both exhibitors and fans a chance to rest before setting up for the next show. Epic Photo Ops deserves special mention for effectively managing the lineups for those seeking a memento with their favourite group of (or with a particular) performer.

Grant Gustin does not appear at many conventions so those hoping to meet him will have to do so at this show. As The Flash in The CW‘s flagship show, I can imagine he’s not easy to meet. To see both him and the entire STAR labs team (minus Jesse L. Martin) on stage is usually a San Diego Comic Con Hall H scale event, and fans of the show got it at Fan Expo in Vancouver, BC Canada! This panel was packed, and anyone there saw the sweet chemistry he has with Candice Patton in real life too. The star of this panel, however, was Zoe Patton, a cute canine which no doubt won many hearts. Viewers who saw this week’s episode, “When Harry met Harry,” got to understand what the Council of Wells was about, and Tom Cavanagh talked about how this segment was pieced together.

When considering the number of television and film productions going on in this corner of the world, folks hoping for a celebrity sighting will find attending this event better than to wait during a film/television shoot. A chance to interact with a star is never guaranteed when the set is a workplace. From the massive list of CW comic book based shows (Riverdale, Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl and iZombie) to movies like Deadpool 2 — which ended production the month before — just who will attend are decided months before. Attendees will have to hope there are no sudden changes the week before due to work (or family, like Stephen Amell had) obligations coming up last-minute. I’m sure there were attendees hoping to spot Ryan Reynolds or Kevin Smith (who did appear in 2016).

[On Vacation] We are going to Fan Expo Vancouver!

This entry is posted to mention Otaku no Culture will be at Fan Expo Vancouver this weekend. Pictures and live coverage can be found by following Ed Sum on his Twitter account @edohotep as he will be officially representing for all three days. James Shaw is somewhere and may emerge from under the rock to maybe offer some notes for the day he’s attending at @windupgeeks and sadly, Shawn Trommeshauser is not attending.

Real-life ™ keeps two-thirds of the crew away from this site and not frequently contributing. More people are needed. If there are readers who like to cover other parts of the Pacific Northwest scene in this e-zine blog, please do not hesitate to contact us!

Updates & A Foodie’s Guide to Fan Expo Vancouver

A Foodies Guide to Fan Expo Vancouver

By Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)
Updated for 2022

Residents far and wide will soon be descending upon Fan Expo Vancouver (Nov 10-12, 2017) in British Columbia. Now into its sixth year, they are having a Steampunk exhibition where folks can learn about this subculture and their Artist’s Alley looks bigger than the retail/exhibitor’s space! In the television world, The CW is being very well represented. The big three — Arrow, The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow — is the spotlight. The list is long and on the week of, adjustments have been made: Maisie Richardson-Seller has been added, and due to work commitments, Stephen Amell, Caity Lotz and Michael Shanks are unable to appear.

This media side will have fans who are not residents of Vancouver get to meet these performers without having to go stalking around in an active film set and herded away by production assistants. People are allowed to watch, as long as they are not in the view of the camera.

I’m always anxious to return to this show to revisit a few places to dine in! After attending this event for five years now and visiting almost all of the inexpensive diners around the Coal Harbour area, I feel I can finally offer my picks. This list will also be updated should I discover a new establishment worth mentioning. By clicking on the operation’s name, you will get to see the original review of these operations:

On Fan Expo Vancouver; Is 2017 shaping to be like 2016? A Retrospective

Fan Expo Vancouver

By Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)

On November 9-11, Fan Expo Vancouver (FEV) 2017 is looking almost exactly like 2016, but with a slightly different guest lineup from CW’s group of superhero shows. For fans wanting an event to meet their favourite television heroes, this fact is good. The latest crop of guest announcements includes Grant Gustin, Stephen Amell, David Ramsey, Neal McDonough, Paul Blackthorne and Caity Lotz.

For others craving diversity year after year, there’s always Emerald City Comic Con (ECCC) in March. Given the distance, to travel there is easy. The expense is not. I usually attend both. For FEV, I’ll be there because of The Fonz! Yes, I love Henry Winkler and all he’s done in the entertainment industry.

As for what’s in store for this upcoming event, I offer my look back at last year’s show. This article was first printed in Absolute Underground Magazine:

Fan Expo Vancouver Gets the S.T.A.R. Labs treatment!

Fan Expo Vancouver 2017 (FEV) is shaping up to be the place where CW’s The Flash stars and co-stars love to hang out. Announced to the lineup is the appearance of S.T.A.R. Lab’s resident nerd, Carlos Valdes. He plays Cisco Ramon, this series mad scientist. Well, not quite but he may one day get there in some alternate universe.

In our dimension, this talented actor developed his skills in theatre. He studied at the University of Michigan and performed in many a local musical, before joining the Jersey Boys on a national tour. His skills have not been spotlighted fully in CW’s lineup of superhero shows but the time will come. Yes, there was a musical version on The Flash, but some folks may not feel this tease of his talents is not enough.

To see Valdes together Danielle Panabaker at this show November 10-12th, 2017 will no doubt reveal more fun stories from the set. The 2016 show had Candice Patton, Tom Cavanagh and Tom Felton appearing and talking about their work, this year has the scientists, and maybe Grant Gustin will make a surprise appearance. He does appear at large scale conventions. It’s only a matter of time where the demand is there for the organizers of FEV to appear in a flash.
