The Royal Cat (金陵御猫) In Review: A Hair’s Breath of Whisker of Mystery and Bewilderment

Cao Liang’s The Royal Cat delivers a playful, mysterious blend of talking‑animal charm and Eastern folklore. A rare North American release, The Royal Cat colourful and whimsical but never quite scratches beneath its own magic.

Liang Cao’s The Royal Cat (金陵御猫, The Imperial Cat of Jinling) may be one of the few Chinese animated features in recent years to secure proper North American distribution—a rare catch for curious cinephiles who love a whisker of something different. While I’m happy that other animation studios can show off their style worldwide, Light Chaser Animation’s White Snake 3, Chang’an, and Curious Tales of a Temple remain hard to find on this continent. As for a physical home video release? That’s a mouse most likely to escape the kitchen.

This film offers a variation on the Puss in Boots formula rather than Kung Fu Panda. Zhan Ao (Tu-Te-Ha-Meng), a talking tabby cat, doesn’t wear shoes and lacks a tail—a bold fashion choice for a feline hero. He’s a skilled fighter who once loyally served General Kou. After his master’s death, however, he reinvented himself as a Robin Hood–like figure, prowling the streets with cause and cunning. That missing tail? It’s not just a style statement; it hints at something mystical. When Ao becomes a wanted fugitive, it raises the suspicion that there’s more to his nine lives than meets the eye. In this world, other animals can also converse with humans—which means the line between myth and reality is as slippery as a fish in a pond.

With Nyaaaanvy, Video Gamers Don’t Have To Be Fighter-Saavy to Enjoy the Craziness Going On

The reason why this videogame is called Nyaaaanvy is that the Japanese onomatopoeia for cat’s meow is nya!

Nyaaaanvy Title CardNow Available on Steam and Nintendo Switch

Nyaaaanvy is a rather fun physics-based 3D fighting game which features sausage-like kitties attacking each other with their butts! It’s less about claiming an alpha status on every rooftop (or other oddly shaped arenas with moving parts) where they nest. Like real life cats, they have their places where they prefer to hang out, and here, it’s all about who has the power.

Not to be confused with other literary and other takes about cosmic horror on a feline scale, like The Cats of Ulthar, or with a role playing game suppliement like Sixtystone Press’ Cathulhu, there’s a new danger in town! The Japanese loves their cats too, and the eldritch horrors of Lovecraftian lore gets a novel, humourous twist in Cthulhu Cat!

From the Press Release:

This one-shot, full-colour gag manga from Pandania (The Evil Secret Society of Cats, Yokai Cats) is a charming tribute both to Lovecraft’s stories and love of cats. This new English edition is translated by Zack Davisson (Kaibyo: The Supernatural Cats of Japan, H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness) and lettered by Steve Dutro (Plants vs. Zombies, H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness).

Summer Lovin’ with Kimono Cats Latest Update is Here!

You can’t just pop every balloon that floats around in Kimono Cats. It requires players to pay attention to win m’lady’s heart.

Kimono Cats Title CardSummer is here, and for most people, that means taking an enjoyable walk to enjoy the season! Some may want to visit the park or head to the beach for a stroll along the boardwalk. That’s the vibe Kimono Cats by HumaNature Studios is going for, and in this much anticipated update, you’re playing an unnamed hero with a female companion whom he’s courting. While this “narrative” isn’t fixed as it now offers gender-neutral character designs/customizations, I’m glad the game is being future-proofed!

As for how far the default mode goes, there are a lot of levels to hit, and I’m still not done! Here, players are primarily throwing darts at balloons so that their contents will drop for me to catch and give to Miaow. Her reactions rate how well your progress is. Part of the goal includes winning her heart. It’s a scenario often found in many high school anime in one form or another. As a festival takes place and teens attend it, there’ll be a scene where the boy has to take on some game to win a prize for his girlfriend. There’s No Need to Cry Over Spilled Milk in Island of Cats

No big plot drives Island of Cats. What we see is more like a documentary about man and nature.

Whether the reverence of cats is explored in manga—like What’s Michael—is played at within a cat cafe or is studied through folklore, there’s no denying these felines have a power. In Island of Cats, these kitties have more than just staying power. In Japan, Tama is a station master at Kishi Station who greets nearly every traveller. Even the building itself was redesigned in her honour.

The star of this film even takes on this name, but here, this felis catus is a he and his master is Daikichi (Shinosuke Tatekawa), a retiree/widower. His son lives on the mainland and his wife died two years ago. This old man has no desire to move off his idyllic paradise.
