TheNFB at Victoria Film Festival 2025, Incandescence Review & Much More!

As the Victoria Film Festival is in full swing, Incandescence is a film from Nova Ami and Velcrow Ripper leads the charge on what works produced by theNFB to watch.

National Film Board of Canada LOGOThe National Film Board of Canada always has a delightful range of films that’s set to debut at one film festival or another. And in Victoria, BC, this homegrown event will feature eight produced (or co-produced) TheNFB pieces featuring the work of talents who know what living in this country means. High on the list is Incandescence, a documentary by Nova Ami and Velcrow Ripper whose last work, Metamorphosis, was a potential game-changer. I interviewed them about why this work matters not only on a grander scale but also in what humanity can do to save the environment.

Flash forward to now, those themes they’ve explored back then get revisited again in their latest. This time, the topic concerns wildfires and how they affect forested communities. What viewers should takeaway afterwards is how tragedy can bring some people together, but also bring about change.

Whether these accept the problems that can arise while living in the boonies, some folks are up to it and others not. This work delicately examines the pros and cons, and also considers the life cycle that occurs following the death of a forest and the renewal process afterwards. It’s a work that’ll get people talking. The footage used ranges from seeing how some fires can get out of control to showing how people feel about the attempts to save homes. It’s quite vivid, and I’d be scared too if I were a volunteer firefighter!

How The Wild Mech West Was Won

Technically, money helps because this series needs the support of fans backing this ongoing crowdfunded project. However, Mech West deserves to get a Hollywood producer behind it as well!

Mech West PosterAnimSchool Studios

Who needs the Wild Wild West when David Gallagherr’s Mech West can reimagine steam-powered machines properly? I’m not talking about the celebrated television show which delivered cowboy diplomacy in the best way possible. Instead, the film, despite its flaws, had a cool moment with that huge mecha spider as the ultimate threat which had to be brought down. Although the series rarely featured steampunk at that extreme level, I don’t think many other takes featured robots powered by coal.

In this YouTube animated series, smaller sized machines need to be fed to keep on going. They’re like little bitumen powered bunnies, and I suspect most of these machines are pack mules or utilitarian for a lot of settlers. When they can’t provide milk, some bots have autonomy and others not. Some are mules and others replace the pony express. It’s a different world other weird west tales have not always explored.

Top Three Choices to Hail In the Chinese New Year (2025 Edition)

Chinese New Year is almost here, and I offer my list on what I expect to be the top three films that’ll be big! And all the movie trailers I could find are also assembled here:

Creation of the Gods 2 Well GO USA Poster for Chinese New YearChinese New Year is coming! And for those folks who want to enjoy part of that day at the movies, five ‘official’ films are being released January 29th! What I offer here are my top three choices. Although I mentioned the sequel for Crazy Alien is coming in my review, it’s not a mandatory must-see.

And what I offer here are nearly every trailer for each of these films to get a sense of what’s going to be presented.

Creation of the Gods II:
Demonic Confrontation

This continuation of the epic fight between clans can spell disaster for all of China, if all parties aren’t careful. That’s because, after the ascension of the last ruler of the Shang dynasty, the transition is not quiet. When the fox-spirit Daji has a dastardly role to play, all will not be well.

As part two of a trilogy, what’s expected will be like Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings–to break the narratives down to smaller pieces. Part three is titled Creation Under Heaven. and that’s scheduled for release next year. As for this middle release,  Well GO USA has IMAX screenings available at select cities (please visit link) on Jan 29th, and will get a wider release at the end of the month.

To Put A “Panda Bear in Africa” May Be Hazardous For This Cub’s Health

Although Panda Bear in Africa is not one of Richard Claus’ finest, this movie is worth the watch for its messages.

Panda Bear in AfricaShout! Studios and Shout! Kids
Digital Release Date: Jan 28, 2025

Richard Claus’s love for all things little is front and centre in Panda Bear in Africa. It’s a Spanish-animated film that’s now seeing distribution outside its country. When it purposely borrows from Kung Fu Panda, Madagascar and Lion King, I’m hoping this filmmaker has not run out of ideas.

After delivering well-meaning tales like The Little Vampire (2017) and Ainbo, Spirit of the Amazon (2021; movie review), this latest work isn’t all that original. Even then, I still enjoyed the overall message about how Pang (Yootha Wong-Loi-Sing), a young panda, loves to play with others outside his species. While others are not as kind, his behaviour is worth learning from. No one should be judged because they are from another species. Even when his pal gets kidnapped, he doesn’t listen to the advice of his elders and is determined to rescue his bestie.

Top 10 Animated Movies to Look Forward to in 2025

To decide on which animated movies are a must isn’t too hard to decide on. When pickings can be somewhat limited in the cinematic front, we’re diving into streaming and direct to video offerings too.

Aztec Batman- Clash of Empires - Animated MoviesInstead of looking at the animated movies coming to cinemas, what I offer is a list of works expected to be released this year from abroad and in America. There are some wonderful works that should be great, and the big question will concern whether the two major distributors, GKIDS or Well GO USA, will pick them up. They’re still working through last year’s catalogue of releases. Trailers are provided where possible:

Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires

This Elseworlds take on Batman lore promises to be good because it’s also connected to a bit of Mesoamerican folklore concerning the bat. Both Aztec and Mayan cultures hold this creature sacred, representing various Underworld aspects. Here, instead of focusing on the Wayne family, another clan’s parents are killed, and Yohualli Coatl enacts swift revenge!

Here, the conquistadors are not the only threat. No Batman adaptation is complete without The Joker! As for how he got reimagined, much has been spoiled in other reports, and it’s better to be surprised.

Top 10 Movies To Look Forward to 2025. Not Everything Has To Be From Hollywood.

Instead of offering a list of what’s coming from “American” shores, this top 10 list considers what’s happening abroad. All cineastes can hope for is that they will get worldwide distribution sooner than later.

Vintage Film Projector Top 10 List GraphicTo make a list of top 10 films being released this year for the masses that are must-sees isn’t too tough, but when I want to know what’s being released abroad, to decide on what stands out, that’s harder! There are non-blockbuster movies that have caught my attention. When they don’t get the love they so deserve, I can say confidently that my list differs from others.

Leading the charge are the following (with release dates where possible.

A Whale
Date: Expected late 2025

When filmmakers bill a movie as “a cross between film noir, science fiction, and cosmic horror,” that’s a winning formula in my books. While I fully expect that it will hit film festivals first, all I can hope for is that Fantasia Film Festival will have it listed following its Spanish debut.

What’s known about this film is that it concerns an assassin whose boss comes from the stars! They give her the ability to vanish without a trace, but as for whether or not the connection is Lovecraftian, I hope more information will be revealed when it hits the International market.

Dracula: A Love Tale
Date: Expected 2025

Dracula A Love Tale Movie PosterWhen Luc Besson announced he will make his own adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel, just what he will do is anybody’s guess. This filmmaker is best known for The Fifth Element and Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.

Attached to play the leading roles are Caleb Landry Jones as Dracula and Christoph Waltz as a priest. Whether that’s Van Helsing or some other character, I’m going to want to know!
