Throughout most of Asia, the love for comic books is all over, and just what’s presented at Asian Comics: Evolution of an Art Form is certainly worth studying!

One week following the opening of Asian Comics: Evolution of an Art Form at the Museum of Pop Culture in Seattle, the excitement is in the air. This showcase of over 400 works from all over Asia even has me wanting to pick up the pencil again and try drawing! While I’m nowhere as talented as the artists on display, just what’s shown traces how this style from this world developed.

It’s not just about manga, but also manhua (the Chinese version) and whatever name it goes by in other countries like Malaysia too. Here, visitors will find works from creators like Osamu Tezuka, Zao Dao, Hur Young Man, and Lat. The gallery also features under-represented artists such as Abhishek Singh and Miki Yamamoto.

This travelling exhibit is making a lengthy stop at Emerald City and there’s no official word yet if it’ll hit Canada too. Some people may not want to cross the border to check out this show, but I say it’s worth the expense. While some of the earliest representations were wall scroll paintings, much has since changed.

Emerald City Comic Con 2024. It’s Great To Be Back!

Although it took a while for me to collect my thoughts, presented here is my look at how Emerald City Comic Con has changed this decade.

Emerald City Comic Con LogoEmerald City Comic Con certainly exploded in size since 2019. Instead of occupying one building and a quarter during the time I last attended, it’s a full building and a half! I’ve heard stories about last year’s and am glad I didn’t go. Folks had problems navigating around and getting used to the new space. And although the pandemic caused this event to lose momentum back in 2020, it continued in 2021 with health checks in place. To get those certificates verifying you’re safe to arrive from out of the country was a hassle. While the medical concern is today considered an endemic level threat, I heard on Facebook three vendors in Artist’s Alley caught Covid-19.

On Friday and Saturday, the two exhibitors’ floors were packed! Maybe 15% of the people walked around wearing face masks. Although the new building is much more spacious, I doubt spreading things out further can help limit the transmission of con crud. Even after following all the talk concerning the move to Washington State Convention Center‘s Summit Building (last year’s show), this new space is much better than the old one! And after last year’s blunder, there are signs pointing to the basement level where the best vendors are located!

Experience Hidden Worlds, The Films of LAIKA in 2023 at MoPOP and More!

My love for this medium has only grown since looking at the objects displayed at Hidden Worlds, The Films of Studio Laika. Maybe 1/5th of their collection is proudly shown and I’m sure there’ll be more put on display throughout the year.

MoPOP‘s Hidden Worlds, The Films of LAIKA exhibit is all kinds of wonderful, and there’s lots of time to plan a trip Seattle, WA to go see it! 

Once I stepped onto the third floor, there were a few stations to learn about the art of making cinema through stop-motion. The best part is to see the sets and puppets from this studio’s movies up close. After seeing this exhibit, I was ready to rewatch all the movies and the making of featurettes again! But this time, I’ll have to wait for my 4K steelbook order of the set to arrive. That’s because I want the extra resolution to see if I can spot where the mould lines are from the bits that help make these models come alive.

On Saturday, October 29, don your scariest costume and make your way to the museum for the Halloween dance party of the season. And this event’s host has the following to say:

Dear friends — we, the sentient machines that have taken over your beloved MoPOP, humbly invite you to our Ha11oween bash. Please consider this as nothing more than a celebration. It is in no way a trap. Or a Red Wedding. Dance your flesh off to the hypnotic pulsing rhythms. Lose your cares and decision-making capabilities in a fruity glass of fermented liquids. Scream for your life in an escape room built solely for your amusement. And party like it’s your last night on earth. Because it won’t be. We promise.

Seattle’s The Museum of Pop Culture May Calender is Nearly All Hands On!

The Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP) in Seattle, WA recently announced the reopening of its popular hands-on Sound Lab exhibition, and their May schedule of events is huge!

The Museum of Pop CultureThe Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP) recently announced the reopening of its popular hands-on Sound Lab exhibition. This news is terrific because its a sign that the pandemic is abating, and they are welcoming visitors far and wide.

Also announced is the Ruth E. Carter: Afrofuturism in Costume Design exhibit will open June 18, featuring more than 60 works from films such as Black Panther, Do the Right Thing, Selma, Malcolm X, and more. Also coming are the following events:
