Dark Horse Comics to Release Calla Cthulhu Summer 2017!

When a webcomic I have not heard of before gets the attention of Dark Horse Comics to publish, I will be callin’ for a preview online. Calla Cthulhu is a digital comic readers have to subscribe to on Stēla (iOS) — a mobile entertainment reader. While not everyone can hop onto every online service out there for their nerdy fixes, to hear some titles are getting a wider distribution makes this fanboy very happy. They are becoming more accessible.

Like other fond favourites which I try to keep up with on the Internet side — Young Lovecraft (sadly it’s finished) and Girl Genius — I find owning a print version better. Being the H.P. Lovecraft fan that I am, to hear about this title coming to print is my dream come true. This latest title influenced by Lovecraft’s work can sit side-by-side with other comics like Littlest Shoggoth and Where’s My Shoggoth? A bigger volume that sits in my comic book section is The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath, and all of these are recommended reading.

[Victoria Fringe Festival ’15] Haunting the Stage with Hitodama, A Review

If you love scary campfire ghost stories told in the vein of Tales of the Crypt, then Hitodama is one fun play to see. This title is also the Japanese name of what Westerners know as Will-o’-the-wisps and they are far more sentient. This production from Mochinosha (also known as The Wishes Mystical Puppet Company) will certainly show how well versed the producers are in the lore from the land of the rising sun. They also performed the raunchy show Oni at last year’s Fringe using the same techniques as before. They use paper cut-outs to create shadows on a silver screen and this style is very àpropos when considering how the supernatural is often perceived. As an avid paranormal enthusiast, I wanted to see this show as fast as humanly possible. But even on premiere night, which was last Friday, the only way I could have made it is if I had a doppelgänger. As long as it was psychically connected to me, my third eye would know all.

There’s Thunder in the air … and it’s in the House of Magic, a Blu-ray Review

A rumbling can be heard in Boston, Massachusetts where nearly every neighborhood has that spooky estate that nobody wants to visit. When a brave kitty needs to find hope, that abode may well be his only chance at achieving a new life after being abandoned. Aptly named Thunder and The House of Magic, this film shows how this cat finds the love he so deserves. Shout! Factory’s early Halloween treat will arrive on Oct 5th for fans of animation and the supernatural to enjoy.

And watching this film is like observing an episode of Casper the Friendly Ghost. Thunder (voiced by Murray Blue in the English dub) has all the spunk, charm and innocence of everyone’s favourite spirit. All he needs is to make some new friends. But when the world seems to be against him, all he can do is find a life away from the limelight.

When Hyper Reality Collides: The Frame to debut this Fall

Fans of mystery and the supernatural should find the trailer for The Frame engaging as they see reality and fiction collide. There’s no real interpretation as to what’s presented in this tease. The montage of shots shows a man running away from something. Juxtapose that with a closeup of an antiquated typewriter, perhaps some people will assume that he’s a writer who crafted a tale that people have read from and found its contents too much to handle. There’s no exact details as to what the plot is. For now the producers are keeping that a secret. With that philosophy, they succeeded at creating a trailer that truly draws viewers into wanting to see the movie when it releases this Fall.

The film stars newcomers David Carranza and Tiffany Mualem and features Christopher Soren Kelly from Ink.  Other cast members include: Cal Bartlett, Anthony Nuccio, Jordan Doll, Kent Randell and Shauna Earp.

Jamin and Kiowa Winans

Fans of Jamin Winans work and Double Edge Films will find his new film tantalizing. He crafted the artful sensation, Ink (2009) — a story about souls caught in a light and darkness war set in the world of the Dreamtime — and masterful Spin (aka “God is a DJ”), available on YouTube. Both his early works show a skill in mythic storytelling.

This new film may well follow a similar distribution model as Ink. It was self-distributed through the Internet via torrent sites like PirateBay. Winans and his producer/wife, Kiowa, embraced the piracy, citing the incredible exposure could only help the film. They believe that “Independent films’ largest battle is against obscurity, not piracy.”

What’s Next for Sleepy Hollow?

CW’s Supernatural and NBC’s Grimm faces stiff competition when facing off against the forces of chaos. Fox TV’s Sleepy Hollow is successful in creating a melodramatic product and it one-ups the competing products by creating a wonderful undercurrent of terror. When this series features witches, immortals, ghosts, hobgoblins and demons, the Kurgan from Highlander the movie will have something to say about it in a series of flashbacks that may persist throughout this series run.

Clancy Brown has a role as Sheriff August Corbin, who is the first to encounter the Headless Horseman in the modern day. But little does he know that the thespian ideologies from secret societies may well be at the core of taking over the world. Corbin was in the middle of investigating this global conspiracy when he finally loses his head.
