The Best Dark Horse Comics March Reads

Dark Horse LogoSpring is in the air, and the best way to read any book is outdoors. Not all readers are indoor types, and the best way to settle into the season, for me at least, is with a graphic novel and enjoying the sea breeze. Hopefully, there won’t be too many April showers ahead, but on a good day (at time of writing), I offer my selection of works recently released to enjoy the season with. They range from mythical fantasy to humour.

About the Mysticism and the Myths You Need to Know Before Moon Knight

What’s done so far in Moon Knight is a delicate balance between what the mythology represents to moments of crazy superheroics.

Oscar Issac is not only the supervillain Apocalypse but also the masked superhero Moon Knight in two (finally united) Marvel Comics Cinematic Universe properties. Both have very loose Ancient Egyptian connections, and this actor is terrific at making us believe he has multiple personalities. Technically, his character has a dissociative identity disorder, and just how many he has would be telling.

In the first episode. Steven Grant isn’t sure about what’s going on with his life. He’s prone to black outs and has to live in seclusion because he fears something is out to get him–or rather, dreads what happens when he’s asleep. He works at the British Museum as a gift shop clerk. His mates at work don’t pay him any heed, and more often than not, step all over him.

Tzouhalem, A Legend or a Man? An Interview

Chief Tzouhalem is a local hero of the Coast Salish people around British Columbia and this is his story….

Chief Tzouhalem is a local legend not everyone knows about. This hero of the Coast Salish people was feared and revered. But for filmmakers Leslie D. Bland and Harold Joe, their goal in the documentary simply titled Tzouhalem is to educate viewers about this person–and distinguish fact from fiction. One day, they hope to recreate his role in the bloody Battle of Maple Bay on the same cinematic scale as Lord of the Rings. Many tribes were involved in this naval battle done riding canoes and welding spears.

After Joe finished film studies at Capilano, he partnered up with Bland to create works about First Nations culture. The latter often executive produced. Dust and Bones looks at Harold’s work as an archaeological consultant. Before, he worked as a traditional gravedigger for his nation, and after that documentary, he was an actor in the web series, Ollie and Emma.

The latest reimagining of China’s greatest savour is certainly epic. Monkey King Reborn redefines and surpasses every take I’ve seen in the past five years. I’m glad we’re not getting yet another introduction and the detail in the CGI is amazing. It’s in par with many of PIXAR’s works. Here, we see Sun Wukong (Monkey’s Chinese name) and his two friends Bajie (Zhang He) and Wujing (Lin Qiang) on that pilgrimage–on the way home from Tibet to China to return some Buddhist scriptures–with Tang Sanzang (Su Shangqing) as their leader. The English subtitle renames him as Golden Cicada or as most disciples would call him, sifu.

Malika Warrior Queen has a Dark Horse behind it to help captivate a new generation of readers about African history and mythology. This work really can’t be read in one night, but in what I could finish, I was amazed and educated at the same time. While the main protagonist is a Xena-like character, if I had to make comparisons, the real inspiration is with Queen Anima of Zazzau, a real warrior queen who lived in the 15th century.

Not everyone will know YouNeek Studio‘s teaser trailer to bring her story into the animated front. It has the feel of Black Panther’s world being further expanded upon. After all, Africa is vast, with many tribal nations covering the jungle and desert expanse. The wars they have amongst one another and within the family say it all. I can only imagine Frank Miller did a lot of research into the outlying regions to get a feel of how terrifying, dramatic, mystic and warlike this world was before deciding that a tale of the Persian Empire is easier. Writer Roye Okupe crafted a tale that’s nicely broken up into units, and I’m not finished with this saga to say how it all cumulates.
