Ideas on How to Change Netflix’s The Electric State for the Better

Despite all the star power used to get fans of post-apocalyptic tales excited for The Electric State, this film generally falls flat for its execution, but I got ideas on how to salvage it.

Spoiler Alert

The Electric State is not an entirely terrible film. Had The Russo Brothers taken more creative liberty and came up with adding a horrific element, I’d love it! When the robots in this film made me think of those from the cinematic adaptation of Five Nights at Freddy’s, just what I imagined up would have been even more thrilling! But when this work is based on the work of another talent’s work, I have to wonder if Swedish artist Simon Stålenhag would approve.

While this work fails as being a road trip movie, where Michelle (Millie Bobby Brown) leaves her foster home to search for Chris (Woody Norman), at least parts of the world building are done right. And when she knows her brother is a genius in science and robotics, this can lead to problems in the long run. Someone can take advantage of him. In what he knows about combining the two, nobody or no device can be safe.

The Only Damsel in Distress is What We Feel After Watching This Flick

Net every twist on the fairy tale convention can work, and where Damsel misses the mark is in providing a reason why she would befriend that serpent in the pit.

Damsel Movie PosterOnce viewers know the movie outline to Netflix’s Damsel, there’s hardly any surprise in regard to what will happen to Elodie (Millie Bobby Brown) in this fairy tale turned upside down. That also includes the empathy that’s expected for any princess who gets tossed to the pit, and expected to die because of the serpent that lies within.

There’s a dragon and while she is no true servant of evil, just what this serpentine represents suggests there’s more to this tale than meets the eye. I’d have to give it another view, focussing on this creature’s point of view, and trying to figure out if this beast was ever friendly to humans.

However, this movie is about a mortal woman who is no longer that lady in distress (as the title proposes). She’s able to hold her own, and I doubt she even wants to be married. The prince she meets is not all that charming once he shows his true colours. Also, I kept on thinking about DreamWorks Shrek while watching this work, and thankfully this live-action piece is not intentionally wanting to mirror the demeanour of Princess Fiona. Both are quite feisty, and I rather like it.

Scaring Up the Monsterverse, Godzilla and Ghidorah

This Monsterverse is better off not bringing in divine figureheads into the fore. Hydras and Cerberus yes, but gods from Babylon or Mesoamerican origins, perhaps not.

Godzilla King of the Monsters Hail the MonsterverseSpoiler Alert

The epic showdown I’ve been craving since Legendary Pictures acquired the license to play with Godzilla is here! In part two of maybe a trilogy, the Monsterverse mankind lives in is filled with hidden agendas and a fear for the future. Our time on Earth may well come to an end. The Titans, monsters capable of mass destruction, will reclaim their territory. Can we live side by side in a symbiotic relationship, as Dr. Serizawa (Ken Watanabe) hopes? Or as TOHO Studio’s animated take suggests, will civilization regress to simpler times?

No real continuity exists between these two studio’s works. Legendary’s version is limited. Only a handful of films can be made before the terms of the contract expire. With a bigger budget, fans can see a massively CGI driven apocalyptic take of monsters ravaging each other and the world. Practical effects can only go so far, and motion capture can do a lot more these days. As this sequel takes place five years later, the Monarch organization is ready for the inevitable. In what they know and have uncovered since–humanity better be afraid!
