10 Best Geeky Movies Coming in 2023

Out of what’s coming (with a few pushed back to this itme), I have my list of the best geeky movies coming in 2023 that I can’t wait to see.

Top Ten Geeky Movies Coming In 2023 To Be Excited ForThe New Year is here, and the only thing some Hollywood studios may fear is in how well their slate of films will perform. Out of what’s coming (with a few pushed back to this itme), I have my list of the best geeky movies coming in 2023 that I can’t wait to see.

As for the drama that occured in the closing months, namely Warner Brothers rebooting their DC Cinematic Universe with James Gunn at the helm, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s is not as happy. What he was cooking up was a hope that he would lead the future, but alas, that was not meant to be. This wrestler turned actor really wanted his movie, Black Adam, to lead to a slate of work where he’s the focus, but alas, that’s not meant to happen. Much like the antihero of lore, he now just wants to be left alone and brooding.

I won’t go into all that went on with the Marvel Cinematic front. There’s lots of coverage which simply said Phase Four wasn’t the best and going forward, we should have a better direction. Elsewhere, the film scene is doing just great and as for what to enjoy in the pop culture front, I have boiled down the former top twenty list to a definitive top ten of must watch.

DreamWorks Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is Beautiful Purrfection!

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is well worth the wait because production for this sequel wasn’t rushed and we have a tale that truly expands past what we know from past films

uss in Boots: The Last WishMild Spoiler Alert

What can a cat do when he runs out of his nine lives? In Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) latest adventure, The Last Wish, he has to seek a force beyond nature to grant him a new set of regenerations, like Doctor Who, to continue adventuring. Instead, his goal is to find a wishing star in true fairy tale fashion to regain those he lost in years prior. This simple premise keeps the story going forward because, throughout Puss’ adventure, he has to be careful in everything he does. Thus, any wrong step he makes might be his last. And along the way, there’s enough danger so he’ll have to consider taking that road more travelled. He never realised how reckless he’s become and all he ever wanted was to be remembered.

What makes this second outing better is that it delivers a fantasy not completely driven by concepts from Lewis Carrol and Aesop’s fables. As a result, this movie feels more like a good ol’ fashioned Pirates of the Caribbean style adventure, complete with some crazy encounters along the way. And what I enjoyed more is that I love the bad guys featured in this film! Here, we get a narrative that understands why Goldilocks stayed with the three bears. To see them become her henchmen makes sense even though we don’t know their whole story about turning into a crime family.

Gudetama An Eggcellent Adventure That’s Too Adorable For Words

Shunsuke Takeuchi voices most of the characters in Gudetama An Eggcellent Adventure, and to say the producers decided to put all their eggs in one basket by only having a single talent do the work is a huge gamble!

Available on NetflixGudetama An Eggcellent Adventure

Gudetama An Eggcellent Adventure is very edgy. Yes, I could’ve used a pun here, but to say it’s edgy is giving it too much credit. The idea of making a lazy yolk co-star in this new Sanrio series with Shakipiyo, a chick, is more than odd. Instead, what they learn together includes more than understanding their meager existance. The end goal is to reunite with their mom with this latest interpretation.

But fans have followed these two clucks for almost a decade! A lot has developed in their past adventures which also includes dealing with the meaning of life and kawaii culture. That is, an examination of what defines cute. These two characters are from the same chickadee breed, but when it comes to figuring out who their mother is, that’s going to be tough! Those who have followed the earlier exploits are at an advantage. For western audiences, not everyone will know of their their early quests. I’m excited to start looking at what has been made prior after watching this new series.

Can Goonya Monster Succeed With What’s Good From Its Predecessor?

Part of Goonya Monster’s odd ppeal includes making the player avatars frequently fall. This party video game is loose continuation of the Goonya Fighter franchise.

Goonya MonsterOn Steam, PlayStation 5
and Nintendo Switch

Goonya Monster is a party video game which is a loose continuation of the Goonya Fighter franchise. This series first debuted back in 2019 by Japanese developer Mutan, and I rather enjoyed that earlier release more. The mechanics are similar. And in what got me curious about this sequel is the paranormal theme. The idea of having to shoot possessed individuals to destroy in order to collect their spirit orbs to purify at what, I assume is the “Well of Souls,” seems like a good enough premise.

The co-op part means working with friends or the AI to continue gathering these balls, and beyond that, there are very little side scenarios to try out during my time with this product. Sadly, I got bored after a while. Also, players need to be subscribed to an online service on their respective console in order to participate. I suggest having the audio turned off, as portions of the dialogue get grating because of its repetitiveness. Goonyan is perhaps the most annoying because, well, he’s a cat who often finishes each line by saying, “Nyamo!”

The Bungle With Paramount Plus’ Rumble And Where to Find It Online

There’s a decent enough story in Rumble to keep me interested, and at the same time, there’s another theme I wished could have been explored.

Rumble Film PosterWWE Studios‘ doesn’t make a lot of animated films, and when they do, viewers recognise why it’s often about selling the parent’s company style of entertainment. Make it kitschy, and they will come.

The last work had their best known wrestlers teaming up with Scooby-Doo and the gang. They were decent enough such that two films (Scooby-Doo! WrestleMania Mystery and Curse of the Speed Demon) got made! But with their latest, Rumble, what’s presented isn’t anything I haven’t seen before.

Originally released to Paramount Plus last year, this CGI film wasn’t able receive the attention it so deserves. Now that it’s widely available (it arrived on home video in late October), and is streamable on services like Netflix (arriving in Canada Dec 15, 2022) and Amazon Prime USA, it’s possible to see what the fuss is about. I enjoyed it for the kaiju moments–which was sadly very brief–more so than its nod to the universal monsters of yore. Thankfully there are plenty of Easter eggs to laugh at. But not everyone will spot them all. For example, there’s a blink and you’ll miss “Mini Cthulhu” scrolling past.
