Griffen Lea, Sarah Anne Murphy, Candace Woodland, Kelly Hudson are back in the Rocky Horror Show and they are bad in Rebel Knock Out (RKO) Productions’ take of this seminal Richard O’Brien stage classic. They have taken the energy from how they played Dr. Frank-N-Furter, Janet, Columbia, and Riff-Raff from last year’s Kaleidoscope version and amped it up. The crowd (whether they’ve seen that performance or not) roared and the shadow dancers cooed at their antics. Perhaps what’s noticeable is the added energy from Woodland strutting her stuff in the tap dancing routine from “Time Warp” and R.J. Peters (Brad) really channeling his inner nerd. When it comes to special solos in a musically raunchy show, Peters certainly created some nostalgic and sombre tones in “Once in a While” to make his moment memorable.

Want to Help bring Doctor Who to the Pacific Northwest?

25 long years may well be a fitting time and reference to the last known Doctor Who star-studded event that happened in Vancouver, BC. The fine folks who once ran the clubs Telefantasy Appreciation Society of Canada and the Time Meddlers of Vancouver were most likely responsible for that event and now they are regrouping to hold a two or three-day event for possibly late 2015. But without the full support of Vancouver fandom at large, it may not happen.

Without these fan run events, corporate type shows could ruin the landscape. There’s nothing wrong with Creation Con Entertainment’s events since they are tailored for the uber-fan, but not everyone can afford their tickets. The more an individual pays, the more privileged offerings they can get. Many events/conventions include this option to stay competitive, and thankfully they are not banking on it to sell attendance.

Whatever the plan may be for a potential Doctor Who Convention, being able to attend and pay at the door will bring lots of fans. But before speculation can happen, if you’re from the Pacific Northwest and think we need more fan-run events aside from V-Con (which is growing strong), this particular convention may well provide the voice that a corporation does not need to be formed to run a show.

The meeting will be held on Saturday, November 1, 2014 from 12pm to 3pm.

GottaCon 2015 Update

Gottacon2015GottaCon announced the official hotels for their 2015 convention. Both Quality Inn Downtown Victoria and The Fairmont Empress are returning as official hotel sponsors for Vancouver Island’s largest gaming convention that’ll take place from Feb 27th to March 1st, 2015 at the Victoria Conference Center.

Convention-goers should book early to avoid disappointment.

[Victoria Fringe Festival ’14] This Oni is For You! A Review

In Japanese folklore, the Oni are demons from Buddhist tradition who have become part of popular imagination in media and it’s an apt name for the play featuring them at the Victoria Fringe Festival. More often than not, these supernatural creatures are not necessarily evil. Instead, they are simply seen as wild and uncontrolled elemental forces who have no love for mortals. When these humans come to them to beg for favours, that’s when the tale of Issun-bōshi emerges — to which this play creates much of the narrative from.

The literal translation is One Inch Boy. A better translation is The One Inch High Samurai.

It’s Morphin’ Time! Two Power Rangers Scheduled To Appear at IF Con 2015!

IFCon2015The list of guests for The Island Fantasy Convention continues to grow and with their latest announcement, I squealed like a nerd.

Our fair city of Victoria, located on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, will see in 2015 not one but two Power Rangers! Wether they are here as special guests of the con or they are expecting the Empress Hotel to be smashed by a giant creature is anyone’s guess. I’m just happy they’ll be here — destruction or no.

IF Con 2015 Announces New Web and Two New Guests

IFCon2015Island Fantasy Con is a multifaceted fan convention with the intent to promote such areas as horror, fantasy, steampunk, and cosplay. It is expected to give Vancouver Island’s fandom a much-needed boost by adding to the area’s convention line-up of GottaCon and Tsukino-Con.

Yesterday IF Con announced a newly designed website for friends and fans to navigate: http://ifconvictoria.com/. But it is the recently acquired guests that may get people clicking.
