What are the Myths behind King Arthur: Legend of the Sword? An Analysis and Review

kingarthur_sdcc2016By Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)

* Spoiler Alert

Guy Ritchie is certainly trying to shake up traditions in King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (KA:LotS). While I’m not sure which country’s folklore the snake-ladies came from, they certainly are not Celtic. I get the sense he’s offering his take on Shakespeare’s Macbeth (The Three Witches) and is borrowing from Hindu legends (Nagas). When he is in control as writer-director and actor, playing the warlord Vortigern to claim the throne from Uther Pendragon, this filmmaker is certainly going to insure his stamp is all over the tale!

Many liberties on the Arthur’s origins are taken and early promotional material alleges Richie is drawing upon the Welsh interpretation. There’s plenty of nuances within the film which shows he is, and they work when he’s not trying to add his trademark on top.

Scooby-Doo Mystery Incorporated Season One and Season Two Review

Scooby-Doo Mystery Incorporated is the latest incarnation of the much beloved franchise that is willing to poke a little fun at itself.

Scooby-Doo Mystery IncorporatedCreators: Joe Ruby and Ken Spears
Producer/writer: Mitch Watson

Animation is no stranger to the horror genre and one of the most enduring cartoon icons associated with this crossover is Scooby-Doo. The cartoons that follow his capers made those spooks that went bump in the night not as terrible as it should be. The scares are only as real as Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy and Scooby want it to be and by the episode’s end, they usually face up to it. The only thing they have to fear is fear itself.

And in the 40+ years since this franchise’s inception, nearly everyone has grown up watching at least one episode of this great dane buffooning his way into popular culture. The comedy relief Scooby provides take the edge out of nearly all of the frights that play out on network television. Unlike Alfred Hitchcock Presents, The Twilight Zone or The Outer Limits, this cartoon series gives younger viewers a campfire story they can comfortably fall asleep to.

Thoughts on the Trailer for Pokémon Sun & Moon!

pokemon-20th-anniversaryThe Sun and Moon are going to arrive together come November 18, 2016, for this latest instalment of the Pokémon franchise. Unlike previous teases of what’s to come for this video game for the Nintendo New 3DS XLPokemon (as featured in the trailer) and the 2DS (unavailable in North America), this announcement reveals where the story will take place, on an island chain named Alola region (this game’s version of Hawaii). Players will be embarking upon an adventure being introduced by a male adult, named Kukui. He says, “Welcome to Paradise, Cousin.”

Immediately, I’m wondering how involved this person will be during the game?

Gojira Resurgence Brings a Second Trailer, An Analysis!

This short does not say too much about the story in Godzilla Resurgance, but in what’s implied is the fact the government is very well aware of Gojira’s existence for some time.

Shin Godzilla Resurgance PosterGojira Resurgence (シン・ゴジラ) is baring his teeth and this beast looks ready to explode for his premiere July 29th, 2016 in Japan. The film will be offered in three formats—IMAX, MX4D and 4DX—to show the scale of this beast and in what this new trailer offer is a suggestion he’s a walking bomb looking for a place to settle in. This short does not say too much about the story, but in what’s implied is the fact the government is very well aware of Gojira’s existence for some time. They are scrambling to obviously try to put him down as he moves from the countryside to the city.

This creature’s redesign looks terrific! The red veins ebb throughout his body like a moving pool of molten lava. Perhaps he’s Earth incarnate looking for more than just a meal. Unlike past films where he’s made to be pleasant for the eyes, this version is the type nobody wants to stare down! Just what he’s after is unknown. Only writer / director Hideaki Anno (Evangelion) knows.

Ghostbusters, the Story so Far, the 2016 Trailer (not a reboot?) & More ….

As the trailer explains, this new team is fighting someone who is releasing new ghosts into the city. However, a Ghostbusters nivue can’t be ghostbusters without a spectacle like Slimer.

Ghostbusters 2016 PosterI’m still leaning on the dislike side of whether Paul Feig’s reboot of the Ghostbusters franchise will be good. Was he involved at the construction of the trailer at all? Probably not, and the person who made this trailer implies 30 years have passed since “four scientists” (technically, three university professors and a dude off the street) saved New York City. This summer, a new team will answer the call.

Feig said his film will have no connection with the original movies. Misdirection has been done before. Remember Star Trek: Into Darkness? Obviously someone at the editing room knows otherwise. Why make references to the classic 80’s film at all? Does that trailer editor know something that this director is fibbing about? When considering the canon and established lore, ever since the incident with Vigo the Carpathian of Moldavia, supernatural activity took a dive. The ghosts of the past are buried, and there’s no need for paranormal investigators to put a cage on the spirits who decided to linger about. They pose no threat!

Enter Ghostbusters the Video Game (available on multiple platforms, like the Playstation 3 on AmazonPokemon), which is officially considered a continuation of this universe. Here, the team are now official city contractors and are training new recruits so their operation can branch out to other cities. Walter Peck, now head of the Paranormal Contracts Oversight Commission, is a continued nuisance and museum curator Dr. Ilyssa Selwyn discovers the architect who designed the building that Gozer landed on, had a grander plan. Ivo Shandor also created the network of tunnels to channel ectoplasmic slime through the city that was used by Vigo. Ivo returned as a ghost to assume Gozer’s place but as with any cheery eyed marshmallow giant who must explode, the plans have to be put to rest.

Is Star Trek “Beyond” Hope? Action versus Vision

Sadly that means the final product may have very little regard for what made Roddenberry’s Star Trek series great.

Star Trek BeyondThe problem with the trailer for Star Trek Beyond is that it does not feel like classic Trek anymore. When the title implies it’s moving away from the ideologies created by Gene Roddenberry, who created this series, not everyone will take to the changes. Some themes from the television sagas must be kept.

Ever since the first movie rebooted the saga, the story has been more about re-imagining the series. J.J. Abrams, however visionary he is, has some good ideas. I appreciate him telling fans in the film that this series is set in a mirror universe. I’m okay with the first film, but the second one was atrocious. I was not okay with a new Kahn. Ricardo Montalbán owned the character. Nobody, not even Benedict Cumberbatch, could ever replace him. From “Space Seed” to Star Trek II: Wrath of Kahn, he made that character.

In this third film, Idris Elba has some tough shoes to fill. Who will be playing? A Gorn perhaps? Most likely not but I get the feeling this movie will be a tribute to all the episodes where Kirk was forced into an a blood sport and fight it out to save his crew. In the trailer released today, Justin Lin shows just how fast and furious he’s going to get with a franchise that’s lost its direction.
