Attend Capital City’s Virtual Comic Con from the Comfort of Home!

Capital City Comic Con 2017Suffering from con-initus? That is, the need to attend some pop culture convention? Sadly, with parts of the world in lockdown because of COVID-19, the organizers of many an event may have to consider going online with something fun to at least keep the peace from nerds going insane. It won’t be a virtual reality simulation and nor will it be Second Life–perhaps that’s the future until this virus is contained.

Coming to your desktop near you is Capital City’s Digital Comic Con! From March 28 and 29th, you can get a different kind of experience by heading over to their Facebook page to see a list of what the local community is offering to one another for this event that was not able to take place. Confirmed is a cosplay where you can simply post a picture of the costume you were planning on wearing to this event and a podcast from The Zone. More is in the works, and it’s going to be a casual thing so people can pop in and out as they like, without feeling like they’re sitting in front of the computer for the whole event.

Links from participating groups and merchants will be provided to where attendees can get their nerd on.

For the latest updates, please visit Capital City’s Facebook page, where this digital convention is taking place..

Capital City Comic Con in Victoria, BC Postponed! and The Ongoing Covid Situation

With no surprise, Capital City Comic Con in Victoria, British Columbia, is postponed. Tickets will be honoured for those willing to wait and for wanting a refund are advised to contact Ticket Rocket at either 1-855-842-7575 (toll-free) or at support@ticketrocket.co

No new date is likely to be announced until the coronavirus situation is in control. This news follows in a huge string of announcements from major shows (Emerald City Comic Con, South by Southwest, Tribeca Film Festival and etc) that are not even local. With one case confirmed on the island, it’s enough reason for the organizers to act.

They also cited the Screen Actors Guild advising its members “that it would be in their best interest to cease flying for the foreseeable future.” Until the coronavirus threat is in control, nearly all events this month and perhaps next are not likely to take place.

Looking Back with Candice Woodward & Realizing Toy Store Time Machine

Toy Store Time Machine Author, Candice WoodwardBy Ed Sum
(The Vintage Tempest)

Available on Amazon USA, Google Books and at the store, Cherry Bomb Toys.

Toys not only fuel but also power the imagination. Candice Woodward’s debut children’s book, Toy Store Time Machine: Robots in Peril, shows how important they are to any child’s growth and how this philosophy matters. Not only does it teach good wholesome values but also it’s a fun read! She’s the second in her family who’s now published. Her sister, Olivia, has her own dark fantasy series. Getting recognized in the competitive market of children’s literature is difficult, and while she did try with major publishers, this new author realized self-publishing with Balboa Press is the best way to get her ideas out.

It’s a Mystery with Atomic Vaudeville’s Cabaret #81

Tickets can be bought on Ticket Rocket here.

Celebrating Halloween doesn’t always mean having to get in touch with the macabre. There’s more to the season than just Rocky Horror and Atomic Vaudeville‘s involvement in the Victoria, BC scene doubled ever since they took on producing Richard O’Brien‘s seminal celebration. Their Halloween cabaret series is just as spectacular and is a local fan favourite. It’s a blend of different entertainment formats–variety show, sketch comedy or burlesque–and is a staple for this garden city.

I wanted to start my celebratory days before the 31st with something different. This year’s theme involving The Quin Twins–Tegan (Kelly Hobson) and Sara (Justine Shore)–solving a bunch of mysteries ala Scooby Doo and Nancy Drew (or is it Hardy Boys since they’re a duo?). This combination was right up my alley! Call me nostalgic, but they hit all the right notes when I saw the posters and enjoyed opening night with wide eyed glee. Part of the reason also included audience participation.

Not every television show from the 90s (or present) can pull off a musical without imitating another. Often, it explores the innermost problems of the protagonist(s) while the antagonist acts as a supernatural force to ‘assist.’ Joss Whedon‘s “Once More With Feeling” in Buffy the Vampire Slayer set a precedent for future producers to consider. Xena: Warrior Princess is very notable. From the past 10 years, The CW’s Supernatural saw the Winchester brothers happening on a stage show version of themselves. In The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow, they had to sing as it helped them reveal hidden feelings to loved ones. Starry Starry Skies ProductionsBuffie the Vampyre Slayer Parody stays true to theme and also showcases the wonderful singing talents from the Capital region.
