A Victorian Theatrical Halloween Guide 2019

Victoria, BC and Halloween Skies with the Skull in ViewHalloween has become synonymous with humanity’s once in the year obsession with all things occult. Whether that’s with ghosts, the macabre or fantastic beasts, folks celebrate it in myriad ways as part of this season’s tradition.

Not on this list are the traditional staples–ghostly walks, haunted fun houses and public ghost hunts–and I’m going for unique one offs. Included are theatre productions that are not rinse and repeat. Yes, while we all love to get our Rocky Picture Show on, and Atomic Vaudeville deserves special mention for putting on two different productions.

The call is out there for theatre groups or organizations with an event they wish to have listed that is not on here. Please check the contact us section to email or reply with your event!

Fool Munn Komming heads to Vancouver Fringe Festival!

Vancouver Fringe FestivalBy Ed Sum
(The Vintage Tempest)

There’s no way to easily describe what Fool Munn Komming is about. I can summarize and describe what Sam Kruger is doing on stage. To say he’s a spitfire of energy is a start.

He plays an alien which hatches out of a bag and looks at the audience like a chick wondering where mommy went. Every once in a while, he’s like Jim Carrey ala Ace Ventura or Steve Martin as Captain Smek from DreamWorks Home. We know he’s an alien from some unknown world who has come to our planet to share some experiences about his life.

Out of Victoria Fringe Festival Comes Theatre SKAM’s SciFi The Rage Trials

Vancouver Fringe Festival

By Ed Sum
(The Vintage Tempest)

Imagine, if you will, an alternative universe–a world just like our own, but different. Every 100 years, seven randomly selected teenagers get to decide the emotional foundation to which humanity has to adopt. The science is never explained in how one can edit the wide range of feelings a human has to express, but the option exists to wipe away the trait known as anger.

Theatre SKAM‘s The Rage Trials is not unlike The Hunger Games, The Purge or Logan’s Run of how a greater will can impose a ‘natural selection’ in the continuation of a species. Playwright Emma Leck is better known for her play Drops in a Broken Fountain which examines the human condition. It won the 2018 Winnipeg Fringe Award of Best New Play. She also wrote a similarly philosophical work How to Want (an Intrepid Theatre YOUshow with Vino Buono) which Joff Schmidt of CBC News wrote she’s a talent to watch.

Victoria, B.C. is ripe with fantastic talents contributing to the local theatre scene. While some may think Starry Starry Skies is a collective of performers who love Van Gogh, their artistry is with the unique shows they have in production. One of their first is Divine Providence, a work-in-progress look at the early days of baseball and one of its first all-star: Old Hoss Radbourn, veteran pitcher for the Major League Providence Grays. He won 60 games, setting a record that has never been broken.

From Emerald City to Capital City Comic Con …

Capital City Comic Con LOGO (old)By Ed Sum
(The Vintage Tempest)

With Capital City Comic Con (4C) less than a week away, just what I’ll be doing here is to run two role-playing games, Call of Cthulhu, and also host a panel about the paranormal pop culture scene. I authored enough content not only here, but also for Absolute Underground Magazine, 28DLA.com and Drunk in a Graveyard to know the trends. I have been a paranormal enthusiast ever since Scooby Doo graced the screens back in the ’60s. I’m not that old, but I love those classics!

This show takes place March 22–24, 2019 in Victoria, British Columbia. It has big goals and while it will never compare to the mainland shows, it can hold its own. This event is like that Little Engine That Could. I’ve talked to Biajo Woodward of Cherry Bomb Toys to know it will take years before the loftier ideas can get realized. Support from different industries is needed. In the meantime, it keeps chugging along, and I know at least part of the team simply want to offer good things for the community to enjoy. For those fans wanting something quieter, I recommend this island grown convention. It’s quaint.
