Power Rangers Teaser Trailer Reveals a Film More Grounded in Reality

The Power Rangers teaser trailer that was expected to be released at the New York Comic Con (NYCC) later today has been given an earlier reveal through the Power Rangers’ official movie Facebook page. Although some people at NYCC may be disappointed they won’t get that exclusive first look, there are many who may forgive after seeing this trailer.

Gone in this trailer are the faces from the original 1995 film (Amy Jo Johnson, Jason David Frank, David Yost, Karan Ashley, Johnny Yong Bosch, and Steve Cardenas), replaced with a new cast ( Naomi Scott, Becky G., RJ Cyler, Ludi Lin, and Dacre Montgomery) and presenting a fresh perspective. No longer do we get this feel that the Power Rangers are a group of popular kids bullied by social outcasts (played beautifully by actors Paul Schrier and Jason Narvy) who were jealous of their status. The situation has now reversed, the kids who become the Power Rangers are the social outcasts. Bullied to a degree by those in the upper echelons of a typical American high school, it grounds the film into something real and all too familiar.

This trailer reveals the discovery of the devices that will eventually give the Rangers their power. The fact the power appears to remain when suits are not worn gives the five more responsibility in how they must conduct themselves. In addition, look for a quick scene of Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa and a glimpse of part of the Red Ranger’s costume during a suit-up scene near the end of the teaser. Check the trailer and if you can, compare it to the original, we would love to hear your opinion.

New Look Promoted in Pokémon Sun and Moon Anime

pokemonsmpromoBy James Robert Shaw (The Wind up Geek)

With the games of Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon are slated for a November release on the Nintendo 3DS system, it only makes sense there would be an anime to accompany it. Pokémon Sun and Moon anime is coming but the new series takes a departure from Pokémon‘s traditional art style of hard lines and embraces more fluid animation. Of note is Satoshi’s (Ash Ketchum in North America) softer and more youthful appearance. This may suggest a change in animation production company. We can’t seem to find any animation company’s credit on home network TV Tokyo’s Pokémon page, nor can we find a news piece (as of yet) that suggests a change in animation production company, but we suspect Toei is handling this one.

This new series brings the Pokémon adventure to the Alola region where we see Satoshi adjusting to life as a transfer student at a new school.

Have a look at the trailer that premiered on Japanese TV today. We here at Otaku no Culture would love to hear your thoughts.

PIXAR’s original animated shorts is quite often more amazing than their feature-length films. While there are a few exceptions, namely with Toy Story, Wall*E and Up as my top three favourites, in what I’m watching attached to their movies is nothing short of marvellous. In my list of best films in this category has to be (in order): Piper, Blue Umbrella and Lifted. I admit to a slight bias towards the last item on this list, since I adore UFO stories that are not horror scenarios.

Piper is this studio’s latest entry and it’s nothing short of amazing. I do not think I can even watch this short on Blu-ray (1080p) resolution. It is very deserving of a 4K (2160p) treatment! I was amazed at witnessing every grain of sand rendered and the detail along every feather of the hero. Piper is most likely the name of the baby bird, a Sandpiper, learning how to hunt for food. Unfortunately, in his first attempt, he nearly got washed away by an ocean wave! His reaction was priceless and his ruffled look had the audience in stitches! This piece was screened along with Finding Dory, so the themes were very similar!

Ab Fab: The Movie Teaser Pays Homage to Bond

Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie will be released in the United States and the United Kingdom July 1, 2016.

Absolutely Fabulous - Jennifer Saunders (Edina) and Joanna Lumley (Patsy) Absolutely Fabulous (Ab Fab) has received a lot of attention recently and deservedly so. The series that saw Jennifer Saunders (Edina) and Joanna Lumley (Patsy) as two middle-aged women burning the candle at both ends was much more than a simple comedy. If anything Ab Fab was social commentary on society’s obsession with fame and perfection. Appropriately the Ab Fab movie is receiving as much press from the fashion pages as they are the entertainment ones.

Gojira Japanese Movie PosterNot a lot of information is offered in Toho’s tease of the Mighty G’s return to the big screen in Gojira: Resurgence. The text can literally mean New Godzilla, so the meaning can vary depending on translation. The title. potential poster and teaser trailer released to wet appetites does not say much in what’s coming, and hopefully the direction will be good. The footage offered may not be used at all in the final product as all it offers is a lost footage from a cell phone user recording the feet of various people running away from some invisible threat. What’s created has the slight feel of Drew Goddard’s Cloverfield.

The teaser ends with the call of the mighty beast and thunderous stomps — but does that mean anything? For now, maybe that of the beast awakening from a long slumber.

Supposedly, the poster unveiled in a tweet by Japanese band Katokutai only explains the detailing put in the new beast’s look. The print is a three colour image that, when enhanced, reveals the scales of this radioactive beast and the tiny eyes it uses to strike fear.

Hideaki Anno (Evangelion) and Shinji Higuchi (Attack on Titan) will be sharing the directing duties in this film that’s scheduled for a July 29th, 2016 release.

Star Wars Rogue One and Creating Casting Rumours

By the Jedi Holocron

star_wars_logo_640_large_verge_medium_landscape

The official Star Wars news is that there’s going to be a movie where the plot involves the Death Star. This prequel, simply titled Rogue One, will bring together a band of other resistance fighters to fight against the Empire, and to keep in line with the events that happened a long time ago, not in a galaxy far, far away but in what’s considered canon, the plan is to snag the blueprints of this behemoth. However, as most fans already know, many a spy will have given up their lives to thwart the evil Empire’s plans to conquer the galaxy, and they will get to see how that story unfolds.

This information arrived on the final day of the Star Wars Celebration. The teaser does not reveal much other than the possibility that part of the story will take place on a heavily forested planet. Other than the voice over by Sir Alec Guinness saying, “For over a thousand generations the Jedi Knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic. Before the dark times, before the Empire…,” not much is known about their final fate by the galaxy at large.

There may be one more story involving the last of the Jedi making one last attempt before the Empire makes its fist to affirm that they are the ‘new law.’ But sadly, they are extinct in what director Gareth Edwards revealed to the Guardian.

In the world of Rogue One, Edwards said the “absence of Jedi is omnipresent.”
