AbFabMovieAbsolutely Fabulous (Ab Fab) has received a lot of attention recently and deservedly so. The series that saw Jennifer Saunders (Edina) and Joanna Lumley (Patsy) as two middle-aged women burning the candle at both ends was much more than a simple comedy. If anything Ab Fab was social commentary on society’s obsession with fame and perfection. Appropriately the Ab Fab movie is receiving as much press from the fashion pages as they are the entertainment ones.

In this latest outing under Fox Searchlight UK and BBC Films, Edina and Patsy are still living the high life by shopping, drinking, and clubbing their way around the trendiest of London hotspots. But a major incident at a uber fashionable launch party sees the pair take the blame. Entangled in a media storm and doggedly pursued by paparazzi the pair escape penniless to the French Riveria, playground of the super-rich. But once on French soil Edina and Patsy hatch a plan to make their escape permanent so they could live their new high life forever more.

In the opening sequence of the teaser there is a nod to the Bond franchise in the form of the speedboat Edina and Patsy are being steered on. When the camera pans back from the bow of the boat to the back, we see the name “Skyfall” painted on the rear of the boat. Skyfall was the title of the 2012 film starring Daniel Craig as British agent James Bond. Lumley herself was a Bond girl in the 1969 film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service with George Lazenby in the role.

The cast of Jennifer Saunders, Joanna Lumley, June Whitfield (Edina’s Mother), Julia Sawalha (Saffron), and Jane Horrocks (Bubble) will be reunited with appearances by Dawn French (Vicar of Dibley), Gwendoline Christie (Star Wars Episode VII), Celia Imrie (The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel), Rebel Wilson (Pitch Perfect 2), and Joan Collins (The Royals).

Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie will be released in the United States and the United Kingdom July 1, 2016. Screenplay is by Jennifer Saunders and director is Mandie Fletcher.
