What’s New and Old for This Year’s Christmas Special Viewing?

But as for regular programming from the past twenty years, there’s only a handful of Christmas related works which I’d happily watch time and time again.

Angela's Christmas Wish review - bringing the warmth back to the seasonMany animated Christmas specials (from 19xx to 2000) are considered tradition, and others–the newer stuff–are jockeying for position as a fan favourite in today’s holidays. Of the channels I’m subscribed to (or are part of my regular network package), the content is not feeling as fresh as it could be. YTV is generally my go to channel, but these days, this station is including programming that mixes up decades and a few new things as staples for the season.

They offer a bit of new content. There’s plenty of top ten or twelve, but I’m tightening the belt on making it five!

Wolfwalkers on Apple TV+ Today!

Wolfwalkers on Apple Tv+ this Friday!Available on Apple TV +

If you’ve missed catching this latest Cartoon Saloon work at earlier this year for one reason or another, now is the chance to see it at home. Available to stream is Tomm Moore‘s Wolfwalkers!

This beautifully rendered work sees man against beast. The wolf is feared throughout Ireland. But young Robyn sees beauty, and when she befriends a girl of the woods, Mebh, she discovers something else. The locals have a connection with the land and this lupine creature is not meant to be feared. It’s a glorious story about change and acceptance.

The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special Builds on a Tradition

The Freemakers. You’d think there’d be room for this beloved show; this family is technically part of the LEGO Star Wars universe, and they deserve a return to celebrate Life Day rather than to be discarded.

The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special is perfect to give fans a chance to sort of forget a certain lamented television program about this galaxy, far, far away. Love that past live-action special or hate it, the only thing fans need to know is that Life Day is canon. It’s celebrated throughout the galaxy as a time for all families to get together. It was originally a Wookie holiday where they pay respect to the Tree of Life.

This animated take pokes fun at this franchise in the way many a LEGO toon does. Poe is all gung ho (willing to toss his uniform to the washer) while donning a gaudy sweater, Finn is training to be a Jedi and Ray is frustrated that she can’t train this former Stormtrooper. The nice part of this tale is that it can work as an official continuation after The Rise of Skywalker. However, because of a certain level of craziness that goes on, it’s unlikely Disney & Lucasfilm will say that it is.

Jumping the Shark Encounters of the Third Kind

Despite the various highs and lows, Shark Encounters of the Third Kind is not destined to sink or swim in the world of B-Moviedom.

Admittedly, the movie poster for Shark Encounters of the Third Kind is slick. The title will even nap the attention of many a B movie enthusiast, and Stephen Spielberg may well just simply shrug and laugh along to this shlock produced/directed by Mark Polonia and from a script by John Oak Dalton. It’s campy as all hell. Had it been given the budget of a Michael Bay film, I’m sure what’s realized in concept art can look far nicer.

Instead, this filmmaker’s shark fueled resume tells all. Previous works include Land Shark, Sharkenstein and Snow Shark: Ancient Snow Beast (short Video). instead of realism, he goes for foam latex and Georges Méliès attempts at cinematic special effects. Back then, they would impress, but today, the work is laughable at best.

On The Fear of Dancing with Michael Allcock

“My issue is more about why should I dance? I don’t really get anything out of it. My film is about letting go and we all have things that hold us back in life that we can’t overcome,” said Michael Allcock.

Some people may not necessarily to go “Slow dancing, Swaying to the Music” ala Johnny Rivers with that significant other or to “Pump up the Jam” with Technotronic. Children generally will do their thing on the dance floor. Teens, however, have a lot more to deal with when at that Winter formal. As for how many will skip the prom due to nerves, that’s subject to debate. But when an individual becomes an adult, just why they do or do not go clubbing, depends. Writer/Director/Narrator Michael Allcock is one of those persons who has a Fear of Dancing.

His filmography is vast. His two decade long career saw him work in various genres, but it’s his love for documentaries which drives him. He’s the creative mind behind Semisweet: Life in Chocolate and Kubo’s Crickets. He admits to simply being a hired gun to put together the narratives of many products–ranging from Canadian science fiction television series Starhunter to being a screenwriter for Paranormal 911. When opportunities pop up to make feature-length documentaries, he admits to being at his best when he’s in full creative control.

The Folklore Behind Invincible Dragon (九龙不败)

Jin (Max) Zhang is the next Invincible Dragon! Or rather, in this movie’s case, an undercover cop whose lapse in judgement on duty has robbed him of more than just a fiancée.

Jin (Max) Zhang is the next Fist of the North Star. Or should that be Crying Freeman? Anime references notwithstanding, he has the good looks to pull off playing either character should they get realized into live action. But in Invincible Dragon, he plays Kowloon, an undercover cop whose lapse in judgement on duty has robbed him of more than just a fiancée. He gets reassigned and stumbles into another crime wave much to the chagrin of his captain.

A psychopath is out on the loose and killing female police officers. Losing his girlfriend is motivation to get him on the case. It’s a cop and MMA showcase of what Zhang can do as a fighter. The punches feel real, especially when his rival, Alexander Sinclair, is played Brazilian mixed martial artist Anderson Silva. They are the highlight. Plus, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a bungee cord used in a fight before!
