Thor’s Day Off in LEGO

LEGO Fanfilms can be hilarious, and this one is Thortastic!

Mad About LEGO brings us this funny little indie short about Thor’s day off from Avengers duties, from being a super hero and from being a Asgardian God.

This short was made with the LEGO Super Heroes Movie Maker for the Apple iPhone. The program was created by Pereira, O’Dell and Uncorked Studios.

LEGO Ghostbusters? Oh Yes, Brick it on!

An anniversary LEGO Ghostbusters set is one step closer to realisation.

thumb640x360-2More than 8,000 supporters have made their voices heard on LEGO Cuusoo, and an unofficial number of 10,000 has made the LEGO company consider manufacturing a LEGO Ghostbusters 30th anniversary set.

The entire team of Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, Egon Spengler, Winston Zeddemore and Slimer will get recreated in LEGO. The Ecto-1 and Firehouse will be the centerpiece and … waitaminute, where’s Janine? She’s just as important too, and let’s hope she is not forgotten.

On the CuuSoo page, LEGO stated: “Ghostbusters fans around the world have shown that they want to see a commemorative LEGO set and you’ve now reached the milestone where we will evaluate the potential of creating a set based on your proposal.

“We’ll build concept models and determine if the concept meets our high standards for what it takes to be a LEGO product. This includes factors such as playability, safety, and fit with the LEGO brand. Every potential LEGO product goes through a process like this and must meet the same standards.”

LEGO launches Rebrickable! Ah, to Build Again…

At LEGO’s new website, Rebrickable, owners can learn about what to do with their sets to build something new.

Rebrickable

One of LEGO’s lasting appeal is the ability to tear apart bricks from various sets to build something new, or to modify a LEGO Tie-Fighter to look like one of those Clone Wars prototypes or a Next Gen fighter from Dark Empire. Well, maybe. Brick builders are able to do anything they want.

But if they are stuck, there is a new website, Rebrickable, that will tell owners of pre-existing sets what they can do next with their LEGO tank or helicopter. There is a total of 9511 sets in this database and 569 of them are custom My Own Creations that can be combined in numerous ways that can be sure to ignite new imaginations. Up to six different kits can be entered into this search engine to tell users what can be made of those LEGO parts. When the database returns an answer, it will tell the person just what can be made, how many parts are needed and what’s missing to complete it.

Of the sets, most of the kits are from the regular line of LEGO products along with franchise movie tie-in products. To name a few, many Star Wars kits are mentioned alongside Technic, Prince of Persia, Harry Potter. And if builders are willing to blow their Eiffel Tower or Taj Mahal apart, more power to them! At least this time, there will be no secret service agents tailing after them since it’s just the toy being torn apart.

A look at VicLUG. LEGO and Insider Connections:

LEGO is more than a toy for some, but also a means to form meaningful bonds between individuals who love the brick. At VicLUG, a local club, Ed Sum not only pofiles who these people are but also gives a quick rundown of this toy’s history.

VicLUG TeamOtaku no Culture’s own Ed Sum presents a mini-documentary that quickly looks at the history of LEGO and examines what it means to a bring people together. In this production, he profiles a local group, the Victoria Lego Users Group (VicLUG).

This video was made a few years ago as a final video project when he took the (now defunct) Applied Communications Program (Camosun College), and he’s also interviewed the group! The link to that article can read here.

SDCC’13: LEGO Back to the Future Flashback!

Yes, Doc Brown will be furious at my desire to bash toys up, but I do have a destructive tendency when it comes to certain LEGO builds. After all, rebuilding them is half the fun.

lego-back-to-the-future-deloreanAll I can say in response to LEGO’s release of the Back to the Future line of bricks is that, “This DeLorean can be rebuilt after being gleefully smashed.”

Before fans say sacrilege, this product is LEGO and the build looks relatively simple to assemble. But there is also another reason: it can be updated to look like the vehicle from the later movies, and each of them do have subtle differences.

Select retailers will receive this item on August 1st to sell for a MSRP of $34.99 and I am heavily considering to be waiting in line at my nearest Toys R’ Us to buy this kit. Even if this particular build looks small and the final product looks mediocre, it should be to scale for the awesome looking train.

I can not wait to get the Doc Brown’s homage to steam punk. Hopefully this locomotion will be set to sell later. It’s currently a LEGO Cuusoo concept/design. For people who do know what this group is, they produce community supported sets. All it takes are 1,000 ‘likes’ and it will be reviewed by the LEGO Group to be considered being made to an official LEGO product.

LEGO Merchandise Galore in Anticipation for the Movie!

73281By Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)

The LEGO Movie is going to be big, if not bigger than anyone can construct it. Due in theatres Feb ’14, this product will have a variety of merchandise ready for it, including a video game and building sets that will recreate moments from the film. Based on the teasers, the Wild West and Space will be part of the entourage of getting audiences, new and old, of knowing what the line of tie-in products can offer.

The only issue video gamers may wonder about is if TT Games’ adaptation will offer anything new to the table. All of their past LEGO movie tie-in products have been the same platform engine but with tweaks added. Players run around solving puzzles, collecting coins, jumping around and saving their partner (in two person play) from a tough to navigate area. The typical boast of different playable characters and added levels is nothing new to gamers who have tried the LEGO games. Honestly, that needs to change. To own a game just for the humorous cut-scenes is not enough.

At least the plethora of other products ranging from clothing to movie guides will show that nothing is going to be untouched merchandise wise. LEGO is very popular for people of all ages. The question of just how much glut is going to happen will get answered when the film releases next year.
