The Masters of Spinjitzu Heads into Season 14 This Weekend!

Whatever the outcome–as there’s only four episodes–and if the trio are immediately found, fans of this series will be glad to know the saga is going strong.

The next season of LEGO Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu may well go full on Island of Doctor Moreau! Or should that be discovering the secrets of this franchise’s version of Easter Island? Officially, the story is about rescuing Misako, Master Wu, and Clutch Powers. They went on an expedition and the trailer suggests what they are searching for is an amethyst crystal. When Clutch is involved, I’m guessing the team up was to search for some relic about this world’s past.

This concept behind this chapter might be appropriate to celebrate the tenth anniversary year of the series.

Dark Horse Comics’ The Mask is Back! & Running for President?

SpinjitzuBy Ed Sum
(The Vintage Tempest)

Publisher:
Dark Horse Comics

Released Oct 16, 2019

I’ve been a fan of Dark Horse Comics’ The Mask way before the movies and cartoons. While these alternative takes were fun and light-hearted, I missed the darker quality which existed in the comic books. I kept up when it was shuffled to Mayhem–back when this franchise’s future was in doubt. When other versions took precedence (and the publisher had crossovers, including with a certain clown prince of crime), I took a break.

I’ve been wanting to see this franchise return to its roots and “I Pledge Allegiance” serves up a lot of blood and vindictiveness. This latest chapter can not be any timelier due to the political climate of our times. I’m also amused the first issue is coming off the heels of the just as socially charged The Joker movie.

Reminded of Times Gone By with Toy Story 4

One rule of this fairy tale world must involve why these toys exist. In Toy Story 4, we finally get an explanation–they become self aware so that they can make children happy.

Toy Story 4 Movie Poster* Spoiler Alert

In Toy Story 4, Woody (Tom Hanks), Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) and the gang find life with a new playmate generally good. It’s been a few years now, and these days, it’s Jessie (Joan Cusack) whom Bonnie plays with more. The sheriff knows his purpose is to keep the new owner safe. After witnessing her reluctance to go to preschool, he has a new mission.

Finding a Touch of Shakespeare in Disney’s Christopher Robin

SpinjitzuBy Ed Sum
(The Vintage Tempest)

After seeing Disney’s Christopher Robin, I have to buy The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh to watch all over again. Part of my youth was spent fondly seeing these cinematic classics of the Silver and Bronze Age. In the live action front, it will forever be TRON. In the animated world, it’s a tie between three works: Winnie the Pooh, The Great Mouse Detective and The Sword in the Stone. The themes behind all these works are nearly the same, and it defines why I enjoy Gargoyles. I followed a significant portion of Disney Afternoon’s programming even as I was older, and the New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh always brought out the child in me. This series did not share the same gravitas as the films, but I still had to watch it. It was food for the brain as I did my homework.

Part of the appeal of this newest entry is the nostalgia invoked. The introduction is also very sentimental. Good ol’ Pooh Bear is given an update. They are stuffed dolls than actual animals and I am sure a massive merchandising revamp is coming. With this franchise completely reimagined, I am wanting to play with them much like Robin once did. Funko POP beware, you now have a worthy challenger to the button-eyed empire. I find these new imaginings just as appealing as the Disney which introduced me to them.

Two of the Funniest Photos from Emerald City Comicon!

ecccLogoBy James Robert Shaw (The Wind up Geek)

I don’t normally share photos unless I think there will be a great interest in them. But these two photos are the exception, one of the photos is to provide context while the other two are just laugh out loud funny. Right now the annual Emerald City Comicon (ECCC) is being held at the Washington State Convention Center in Seattle, from April 7-10. As described on the ECCC history page:

Emerald City Comicon is the premier comic book and pop culture convention in the Northwest, taking place in beautiful downtown Seattle, Washington.

In 2015, Emerald City Comicon soared to 80,000 people over three days and featured hundreds of comic book guests, celebrity guests and more!

Emerald City Comicon is another killer event by ReedPOP. ReedPOP also runs New York Comic Con, C2E2, PAX Prime, PAX East, Star Wars Celebration, Special Edition: NYC, BookCon, Oz Comic-Con and many more. For more info on ReedPOP, be sure to check out ReedPOP.com.

Comic Book Industry Pros Nerd Out Over 80s Cartoons

By James Robert Shaw (The Wind up Geek)

GetAlongGanglogoIn a rare treat the Twitterverse was witness to a group of comic book industry professionals who let slip their decorum and allowed their nerdier sides to show. Through this relaxed (almost silly banter) people were able to learn what titles they would willingly fight each other over just for a crack at them. The names of those involved should be familiar to many comic lovers. The few we mention here are writer/artist Shawn Aldridge (215 Ink’s Vic Boone and Vertigo’s The Dark and Bloody), writer/artist Ryan Cody (Red 5 Comic’s Atomic Robo Presents Real Science Adventures and Image’s Five Ghosts), and artist Graham Johnson (Serious Turtle Studios’ Of Stars and Swords). The consensus among them was 1980’s Saturday morning cartoons would make for some of the coolest comics.
