Alternative Paranormal TV Shows to Explore This Halloween and Beyond in 2025

Explore fresh and spine-tingling alternative paranormal TV shows for Halloween 2025. From folklore to real-life hauntings, ditch the jump scares.

Poltergeist TV series classic horror Alternative Paranormal TV ShowsHalloween is almost here, and this year the TV networks are finally changing things up with alternative paranormal TV shows 2025. Gone are the endless ghost-hunting clones—this season focuses on storytelling, folklore, and atmospheric suspense. From the chilling origins of Pennywise in IT: Welcome to Derry to real-life supernatural encounters in My Haunted Hometown, these shows promise fresh twists and spine-tingling thrills for viewers who crave more than just jump scares. And I feel it’s about bloody time!

This year is different. The new paranormal shows making their debut aren’t chasing cheap scares—they’re leaning into storytelling, folklore, and actual atmosphere. Instead of ghost hunters yelling at the dark, we’re getting richer narratives, cultural explorations, and fresh twists on the supernatural. The output isn’t as prolific, and I’m thankful for that.

While there’s one new show expected to air on Travel Channel, My Haunted Hometown sounds promising. It’s a documentary series that takes viewers on a journey to small towns across North America to explore real-life paranormal encounters. The show’s unique approach is to have the residents themselves serve as the tour guides, sharing their vivid and often terrifying first-hand accounts of the supernatural activity. These families or folks refuse to leave. Although this series uses dramatic recreations to bring these experiences to life, just whether these incidents are too crazy to be true remains to be seen.

PART TWO: Alternative Paranormal TV Shows Leaning on Realism

While few shows currently match the originality of classics like The Paranormal Zone or Sightings, there are modern series that echo its thoughtful, culturally aware approach:

Historically Haunted (2025)

OUT THERE: Crimes of the Paranormal (2024)

OUT THERE- Crimes of the Paranormal (2024)This HULU series explores eight true crime cases that involve shocking encounters with the paranormal world. Through eyewitness accounts, expert interviews, and all-new investigations, the series delves into cases where the line between crime and the supernatural blurs. It streams on Hulu.

Final Thoughts

With these alternative paranormal shows, 2025 offers something fresh for Halloween enthusiasts—whether you prefer suspenseful storytelling, rich folklore, or psychological thrills. There’s no need to follow Zak Bagans. Jason Hawes’ attempt to go solo with Ghost Nation folded in 2021, when the parent show Ghost Hunters moved networks. Also, with Grant Wilson coming back briefly, it’s good to see the old crew back together again, even though not all of them are always 100% committed. Change is overdue, and thankfully, we’re starting to see it.

Heritage in Motion: Iyanu Outshines Iwájú with Vibrant Yoruba Storytelling

Iyanu brings Yoruba culture to life with vibrant storytelling and striking animation, standing apart from Disney’s futuristic Iwájú. And we got info from SDCC regarding the former’s future. It’s bright!

Iyanu Movie PosterIf you’re seeking an animated series that fuses vibrant cultural storytelling with striking visuals, put Iyanu on your radar. This isn’t just another fantasy—it’s a journey through a mythical African world where tradition drives destiny. Unlike Disney’s Iwájú, Iyanu offers a grounded, heritage-rich take on Yoruba culture that feels timeless and authentic. The two shows present contrasting visions, and while both have their place in examining this fascinating world, fans will play favourites–Iwájú races through a sleek, futuristic Lagos, while Iyanu thrives in a mythical past steeped in lore.

Iyanu draws strength from echoes of Princess Mononoke and Avatar: The Last Airbender—not as imitations, but in its balance of adventure, character growth, and cultural depth. Whether Roye Okupe’s graphic novels carry the same energy remains to be seen, but the adaptation compels me to find out.

Iwájú promotional posterDisney’s Iwájú ambitiously blends African, Eastern, and Western animation styles, yet the fusion sometimes feels disjointed. Its uneven pacing and high-tech, Wakanda-like aesthetic often eclipse traditional Yoruba elements. Tola Martins (Simisola Gbadamosi) is the young girl who learns how to reconnect with the past.

When that happens, the scenes that should showcase ceremonial rites or folklore fade into the background. In what’s more prominent are the bold neon skylines and high technology. Even the costumes, while bold, lean toward sci-fi glamour rather than authentic tradition. Although it shares Yoruba roots with Iyanu, its futuristic framing dulls the impact of those cultural beats.

[Fantasia Film Festival] Haunted Mountains The Yellow Taboo – Delving Into Taiwan’s Eerie Mountain Mysteries

When the haunting symbolism in Haunted Mountains The Yellow Taboo overshadows the narrative challenges, just what should we appreciate from this folk horror cinema?

Haunted Mountains The Yellow Taboo
Played at Fantasia Film Festival July 26, 2025. Encore performance on July 30th.

Although the movie Haunted Mountains The Yellow Taboo, written by Wan-Zhen Zou and directed by Chia-Ying Tsai, doesn’t specify the exact mountain range at first, its haunting visuals and symbolic storytelling quickly hint at the setting. A quick Google search reveals where the legend of the Yellow Raincoat Ghost first manifested, and that place is in Taiwan’s Yushan (Jade Mountain) National Park—a place I’d definitely want to explore… just not during the wrong season.

While the vibrant autumn palette in the cinematography is visually stunning, it carries ominous undertones. The colour yellow, in this context, isn’t just seasonal—it’s a warning. Despite the horror visuals, this film leans more toward psychological thriller, particularly when tensions rise as Chen Jia-ming (Jasper Liu) tries to escape a mysterious time loop.

When A Tooth Fairy Tale Concerns Renegade Teens From Folklore

When A Tooth Fairy Tales stands out in the small list of movies in this subgenre, some folks may well ask why? The thought put behind world-building provides the answer….

A Tooth Fairy Tale Movie PosterShout! Studio & Automatic Entertainment

Spoiler Alert

Van (Booboo Stewart) isn’t your typical teenage boy, and in A Tooth Fairy Tale, he’s more than just the odd kid out. I like to describe him as a punk-rock version of Hiccup from How to Train Your Dragon. The parallels are certainly there, especially when considering DreamWorks’ adaptation: Van has issues with his father, who expects him to one day take over the family business. And, unsurprisingly, he has to prove himself by being the next in line to retrieve a loose molar from a human child.

When Van discovers that goblins are also on a similar mission, his curiosity about the wider world begins to grow. Each species in this realm—trolls, spiders, goblins—has a specific role to play, and just who counts as friend or foe is largely a matter of perspective. In this story, it’s the arachnoids that pose the real threat. I appreciated how they were portrayed as silent, creeping dangers rather than loud, chaotic villains.

When The Beasts of Burden Omnibus Collection Unites Man’s Best Friend and Mysterious Allies Together…

Whether it’s cuteness or our family dog and cats are fighting the supernatural, these pets aren’t your typical beasts of burden in this omnibus graphic novel collection!

Beasts of Burden Omnibus Collection CoverAvailable to preorder on Amazon USA
Release Date: Feb 18, 2025

The Beasts of Burden Omnibus collection is here, and I’m ready to play with every one of these cats and dogs again. When this eight-time Eisner Award-winning comic book series perfectly offers supernatural goings on as folklore defines it, I’m ready to go investigating along with them!

I have been following their exploits ever since The Dark Horse Book of Hauntings, and to see them appear in other titles, like Dark Horse Presents and Hellboy means good things. But to obtain every work they appeared in can be hard. That’s because there is no consistent release schedule.

I do not fault creators Evan Dorkin (Milk & Cheese), Jill Thompson (The Sandman), and Ben Dewey (Autumnlands) for it. In order to construct the right stories, they have to examine the legends too. And when the previous collections ranged from hardcover to soft, trying to decide on which edition to own can be tough! But as a die-hard, I’ve been buying the singles, collections and any other merchandise I know of to show my appreciation, and one day hope the team have new tales planned.

Inkwo for When the Starving Return. When Indigenous Rights Matters in this Amazing Stop-Motion Epic!

Inkwo for When the Starving Return is a brilliant short film that’s more about survival in the arctic! When confronting the self is just as important as dealing with the supernatural, is Dove Ready?

Inkwo For When the Starving Return PosterNational Film Board of Canada
Available Light Film Festival (Feb 7-16)
Victoria Film Festival (Feb 7-16)

After debuting at Sundance Film Festival, the short film, Inkwo, is headed to the Victoria Film Festival! It’s a beautiful film by Amanda Strong who has nicely integrated some folk tales into a battle about humanity versus self, and also nature! There’s some mention of industry, but it’s only implied than openly said out loud.

Not only will this work mesmerise not only its technical achievement as a stop-motion animated piece but also in telling folks it’s okay to be gender-fluid. Although this is not the primary message, that’s what I first recognized. When Dove (voiced by Paulina Alexis) is introduced as female, I’ll stick to this pronoun. During her excursions outside, she must face various arctic dangers. While some encounters are real, it is the ones she must face about herself that’s the most telling.
