[Fan Expo Vancouver] Rue Morgue Magazine’s Festival of Fear Spotlighted!

By Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)

Rue Morgue Magazine’s Festival of Fear, Westcoast edition is set to take up most of the stage at Fan Expo Vancouver 2014. Last year saw the première of Death Do Us Part, a horror film that is very similar to A Little Bit Zombie in theme — where wedding bell jitters can spell doom.

This year’s spotlight will be on WolfCop, a tale of a police officer who ends up with lycanthropy. And just which kind of masters he can end up serving will become the big question of the day. This movie has the potential to make it big in the cult film market, and the filmmakers will be on hand to answer questions along with other guests to fuel the fire for what can be a wonderfully horrific weekend.

The Winter/Spring Conventions of the Pacific Northwest

Beginning in late January 2014 will be the great Pacific Northwest Convention face-off.

Beginning in late January 2014 will be the great Pacific Northwest Convention face-off. Fans of everything geek who think they can attend most of the conventions may well consider this season to be the great pan-pacific drain instead. All that hard earned money will be spent for some interesting goodies and fun times, but as for which cons are worth attending will be based on personal interests.

Fans hoping for another opportunity to get an autograph or photo with their favourite stars can get another chance at another nearby show. For example, Cassandra Peterson, Stan Lee and Bruce Campbell most likely have contracts for the 2014 year with organizations like Hobbystar Entertainment and similar businesses like Heroes for Hire or Creation Con to appear at more shows to bring fans in. So, the chances are good to see them at another con, if people are willing to travel farther to get their nerd on.

Online purchasing of tickets are available for all these shows, and here is a rundown of the contenders and what they offer:

Bruce Campbell hits Fan Expo Vancouver!

By Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)

Bruce Campbell

Groovy will be one of the many words used by fans to describe their feelings about the first guest announcement from Fan Expo Vancouver. Seminal actor, Bruce Campbell is a fan favourite in the convention scene and he should be appearing for all three days, giving some fans more than just a little sugar.

Although he does not attend many shows these days, to see Brisco County Jr. return to the Pacific Northwest will no doubt be wonderfully fun! I vividly recall discovering this talented man through this television series than with Evil Dead. I even caught a very little known film, Goldrush: A Real Life Alaskan Adventure where he was remarkably docile. He was not the atypical smarmy character that he’s well-known for in his movie roles.

And to go see him again will be a pleasure. I attended a book signing from over a decade ago in Vancouver where I had a chance to meet the man. The crowds were not as big back then, but at Fan Expo Vancouver, people should be warned that lineups will no doubt be huge, if not bigger than last year.

With this show now going into its third year and that Rue Morgue Magazine may be involved with bringing Campbell to Vancouver under its mini show, Festival of Fear, this actor will no doubt be a busy man during this show. Maybe during his panel, he can definitively answer if Bubba Nosferatu: Curse of the She-Vampires will happen or not.

But maybe the bigger talk that’s going on is in addressing how the Evil Dead reboot is going to continue. The sequence after this new film’s end credits revealed that the original Ash is kicking somewhere around in that crazy multi-verse. One explanation has been offered, but maybe during Fan Expo, Campbell may shed more light about what’s to come next.

John de Lancie lands at Emerald City 2014!

By Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)

John de Lancie

Emerald City Comiccon announced today that Q himself will be at next year’s big event! For mortals, that means John de Lancie will be appearing all three days at this show.

This versatile actor made his way into the science fiction scene by playing the irrepressible and omnipotent anti-hero in Star Trek: The Next Generation, Deep Space 9 and Voyager. His on-screen panache made this character a unique fixture in the lexicon of this series and his ability to immerse himself into the roles he plays make him an actor that must be followed.

But with a career spanning nearly 40 years, some long-time television viewers may recall his appearance in The Six Million Dollar Man and Emergency! He’s become a fixture in the pop culture scene with roles that includes Stargate SG-1, but he shows that he has a voice to remember in Duck Dodgers and Young Justice. To hear his take in how television entertainment has evolved will no doubt be one huge panel worth attending, and to find out what he will be doing next will be equally exciting.
