Discotek Deep Dives Revives AnimEigo’s Catalogue of Classics!

Long-out-of-print #Anime titles from the 90s are returning thanks to Discotek Deep Dives, offering collectors a chance to skip inflated resale prices.

Discotek Deep DivesAs older North American anime DVD releases from the 90s become harder to find for collectors and fans of this era, nobody really wants to pay the higher prices listed on eBay. Thankfully, DISCOTEK DEEP DIVES aims to correct that. MediaOCD has now partnered up with this company to offer their home media catalog for direct purchase. These releases are transfers rather than full remasters, and the current list shows they won’t be limited to AnimEigo titles. Additional releases will also come from defunct distributors such as Manga Corps.

Galaxy Express 999 The Complete — Who’s On Board to Ride This Cosmic Soul Train Again?

After decades of waiting, Galaxy Express 999 is finally making its full journey to Blu-ray. MediaOCD’s 113-episode release lets fans relive the classic odyssey of Tetsurō and Maetel in its complete, remastered form — no edits, no compromises.

Galaxy Express 999 The Complete TV Series

Available to preorder on Amazon USA

After decades of half-available sets, fuzzy fansubs, and waiting on stars to align in hopes there’s a complete set release than part, Galaxy Express 999 the animated series is officially making its full journey to Blu-ray. MediaOCD‘s online shop has listed this 113-episode TV series, and it’s ready to ride November 25, 2025! This title is from Discotek and it replaces prior releases which only offered part of the story.

For a certain generation, they most likely saw the theatrical version. There’s a lot of content deleted for a sleek take on a very melancholy tale. The train made dozens of stops, saw the characters like Tetsurō and Maetel slowly mature and Count Mecha—well, that’s a detail best not spoiled. And for many, they may well say this anime was when they were first introduced to Captain Harlock!

Although Slow to Crawl, Roger Corman’s The Monster from the Ocean Floor is Still Vintage Terror at its Best!

While Roger Corman’s The Monster from the Ocean Floor is not about Cthulhu, I had to hope! It’s still worth picking up to build that The Film Masters library!

The Monster from the Ocean Floor
Available to purchase on Amazon USA

When Roger Corman’s The Monster from the Ocean Floor is more notable as a home video release, that’s because of the bonus features offered. As my library of this producer’s films grows, I’m still in awe concerning what he’s backed.

Although this film directed by Wyott Ordung is not all that memorable in the long run, it’s still an influential watch. Although I’d rather turn to Target Earth (1954), that’s because it has a special place in my heart. As for this Aquarius work, I suspect it can be called first when concerning a familiar trope. When a lone woman is out to seek danger on her own, it’s safe to say some terror for somewhere is near! At least the restoration lives up to everything The Film Masters is famous for!

A Time of Eve is Set For Dec 10, 2024! Thankfully, That’s Not the Final Countdown.

Pardoning the pun, the timely release of a Time of Eve is very relevant to today’s concerns regarding the propagation of robots with enhanced artificial intelligence in the commonplace. This latest release includes both edits (original streaming and theatrical cut)

A Time of Eve Complete Collection Blu-Ray Cover
Available to pre-order directly from MediaOCD or Amazon USA

Release Date: December 10th.

A Time of Eve may well be a spiritual precursor to other movies where androids are everywhere. Some look ready to upset the status quo. And like those tales like Blade Runner or even I, Robot where action and theosophy are intertwined, here, two teenagers are curious about a message found in their robot’s memory banks. It is an invitation to a café–whose name is also that of this movie.

This story made waves back when it was streamed on Yahoo! Japan in 2008, and simulcast on Crunchyroll. Two years later, they released a regional home video version. An international theatrical release followed. Back then, the ramifications of AI being everywhere was not as big as it is now. It’s mostly about Skynet back then, and now, MedicOCD/AnimEigo aims to change all that with additional material in this North American release.

A Quick Retrospective on Philip J. Cook, Filmmaker-at-large!

One thing that’s for certain is that everyone in one of Philip J. Cook’s film projects are passionate about what they do and are invested from start to end!

Phillip J Cook at WorkThe big difference between one of Philip J. Cook‘s early films, like Despiser, to a recent one, namely Ghost Planet, is in how well he can blend in the special effects. He uses a blue/green screen for most of his wide angle shots, and these days, they’re in those closeups too! With modern-age computer technology, he can truly create those exotic worlds, and while his skills as a storyteller haven’t changed much, what makes his films unique is that he will micromanage. That is, he’s an auteur.

Although most of his tales are populated with characters in familiar roles, I can’t fault him for his choices after watching more than these two works. He wants to make his works accessible. What I’m recognising from Despiser reminds me of Buckaroo Banzai and I had to check out the bonus features first before attempting to watch the film. They’re quite good at getting me primed at what to expect instead of tuning it out.
