Taking on Once More With Feeling, Year Two with Buffie the Vampyre Slayer!

This year’s version of Starry Starry Skies’ Once More, With Feeling; Buffie the Vampire Slayer is bigger and I’m sure the plans to even expand it further will take up the entire breadth of the stage.

This year’s version of Starry Starry SkiesOnce More, With Feeling; Buffie the Vampire Slayer is bigger and I’m sure the plans to even expand it further will take up the entire breadth of the stage. I’m fairly sure this musical will be a staple in the Victoria theatre scene like Atomic Vaudeville’s Rocky Horror Show (unless cancelled because of a certain pandemic). So far, this company is one of two shows at The Roxy offering something spooky for the Halloween season.

Instead of a female narrator demon, this year’s version is male, and there’s more gender swapping going on. One casting difference has another actor playing the role of Spike. Corin Bert Winglet really nailed that role for me with his charm from last year’s show. This time, he’s Sweet, the demon who magically compels his victims to break out into song and dance, and revealing something each character prefers to keep in the closet. But when all the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players, just who manipulates whom in this play is at the core of this musical.

Just when folks looking for Halloween themed activities are having a hard go at finding anything locally, Starry Starry Skies is keeping current with virtual performances! They are bringing back their knockout show from last year and using the Roxy as the larger space to truly get their strut on. As with other venues, seating will be staggered to give space between parties of two.

This high-tech callback to the B-movies may well be the antidote to fans who need a stylish adrenaline pumping romp on any screen! Here, a group of sci-fi cosplayers get their shot to be real superheroes in director Nathan Letteer’s Monster Force Zero.

The trailer doesn’t reveal all, but we can find the hard working ensign Garret Wang (‘’Star Trek: Voyager’’), WWE and WCW wrestling legend Pat Tanaka, and sci-fi staple Heath C. Heine (Jurassic Thunder, Dragon Soldiers), the action-packed sci-fi jaunt will be available On Demand this October from Wild Eye Releasing.

After their comic book dreams are crushed, a group of sci-fi cosplayers are granted superpowers and are transported into the multiverse to do real battle with evil alien forces bent on earth’s destruction.

[Victoria, BC] It’s Tough to Contain Starry Starry Skies Musical, Little Bird

The punk rock movement has not yet begun; as I recall, it owes a debt to the sounds being formed here in Starry Starry Skies’ Little Bird.

It’s a Mystery with Atomic Vaudeville’s Cabaret #81

Tickets can be bought on Ticket Rocket here.

Celebrating Halloween doesn’t always mean having to get in touch with the macabre. There’s more to the season than just Rocky Horror and Atomic Vaudeville‘s involvement in the Victoria, BC scene doubled ever since they took on producing Richard O’Brien‘s seminal celebration. Their Halloween cabaret series is just as spectacular and is a local fan favourite. It’s a blend of different entertainment formats–variety show, sketch comedy or burlesque–and is a staple for this garden city.

I wanted to start my celebratory days before the 31st with something different. This year’s theme involving The Quin Twins–Tegan (Kelly Hobson) and Sara (Justine Shore)–solving a bunch of mysteries ala Scooby Doo and Nancy Drew (or is it Hardy Boys since they’re a duo?). This combination was right up my alley! Call me nostalgic, but they hit all the right notes when I saw the posters and enjoyed opening night with wide eyed glee. Part of the reason also included audience participation.

Not every television show from the 90s (or present) can pull off a musical without imitating another. Often, it explores the innermost problems of the protagonist(s) while the antagonist acts as a supernatural force to ‘assist.’ Joss Whedon‘s “Once More With Feeling” in Buffy the Vampire Slayer set a precedent for future producers to consider. Xena: Warrior Princess is very notable. From the past 10 years, The CW’s Supernatural saw the Winchester brothers happening on a stage show version of themselves. In The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow, they had to sing as it helped them reveal hidden feelings to loved ones. Starry Starry Skies ProductionsBuffie the Vampyre Slayer Parody stays true to theme and also showcases the wonderful singing talents from the Capital region.
