Let’s Celebrate Hellboy Day March 23, 2019 Courtesy of Dark Horse Comics!

Hellboy DayHot on the heels after the release of the entire Hellboy Omnibus collections, fans should rejoice! Next year, on Saturday, March 23, 2019, Dark Horse Comics will celebrate the 25th anniversary of legendary comic book creator Mike Mignola’s most famous creation with Hellboy Day.

Shortly after, fans can go enjoy the reboot of the film franchise on April 12, 2019.

In 1994, this company published Hellboy: Seed of Destruction and introduced comic book readers to the Right Hand of Doom, the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, and one of the most iconic comic book characters—and universes—of all time. For 2019’s Hellboy Day celebration, Dark Horse will publish the 25th anniversary, promotional edition of Hellboy: Seed of Destruction issue 1, featuring a new cover by Mignola and colorist Dave Stewart, which will be given away at participating comic book shops; and select stores across the country will host Hellboy Day events.

“When I created Hellboy way back when I never imagined he would be around long enough to celebrate a 25th anniversary,” said Mike Mignola. “I’m grateful to the writers, artists, colorists and letterers who’ve joined me in telling Hellboy stories for all these years. And, of course, so grateful to the fans. This thing could not exist without their support and it’s a pleasure every time I get to go out to meet them.” Mike Mignola will appear at a Hellboy Day signing at Earth 2 Comics in Sherman Oaks in Los Angeles on March 23.

Ghostbusters AR Game, First Impressions

Hellboy DayBy Ed Sum
(The Vintage Tempest)

AR or VR enthusiasts have the choice of playing two versions of Ghostbusters World. Adaptations of this franchise have manifested in many forms and the part many gamers get the most thrill from is in blasting a ghost and sending them to the aether. Well, to put ’em into a trap. From the Commodore 64 game to PlayStation 3, I have almost played them all. None can be as exhilarating as having that right first person shooter perspective.

With this new game by Sony, Ghost Corps, 4:33, and Next Age, the idea is almost there. For some reason, I think playing this game with a selfie stick holding the smartphone can add to the idea of welding a photon pack proper. Even without, the idea of chasing after spirits feel good! The best part of this game is to see the work of local artist, Dan Schoening (who illustrates IDW’s comic books) make up the part of this game. I’m fairly sure some of his art is used in the story mode.

Dark Horse Comics is Ready for God of War! Side Stories

Hellboy Day Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)

* Spoiler Alert

Kratos, The God of War, is synonymous to what made playing the games for the Sony’s PlayStation 2 great. Yes, there were other games which I enjoyed since this console’s introduction–including the Final Fantasy and Wild Arms franchise–but the storyline which Sony’s Santa Monica Studio developed had me glued from the start. It sated the folklorist in me and I enjoyed how the games depicted the dangers which lay ahead, especially when the Greco-Roman gods walked amongst men.

Sometimes playing the video games is not enough, and while there was a 2010 comic book series from years ago was a mixed blessing, I find myself enjoying this new work by Dark Horse Comics more. Kratos past is behind him. He’s at peace–or so we thought….

This Mountain Life is a beautiful documentary about staying positive. For those aspiring to climb high enough, communion with Nature can be found. Though tuning into the cosmos natural vibration is not everyone’s goal, these huge rocky ranges people find latticed around the world offer than meets the eye. At least for those folks who wonder what it’s like to live off the grid, or spend time away from the concrete jungle—whether it’s at a cabin, a monastery or a small community in the woods—this film reveals plenty.

At the same time, we are reminded Supernatural British Columbia is three-quarters mountainous terrain. Life within the Coast Mountains (sic. Cascades) is the focus. To live life with the outdoors as your backyard is not limited. Those willing to explore these alpine ranges can reveal a bounty of medicines and new discoveries, if not reconnecting with a higher force. Small towns tucked within the valleys enjoy the benefits. In the Lower Mainland, some folks can visit Whistler, BC to go skiing. I am brave enough to venture deeper to discover other treasures, if not get spirited away—lest the wildlife have other plans for me.

Fact or Fiction: The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch

Hellboy DayBy Ed Sum
(The Vintage Tempest)

Binge watching the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina on Netflix made the day transition to night quick. On Halloween, it was the perfect show to get into the festive mood. The live-action adaptation of a nearly 50-year-old franchise and the comic book of the same name was perfect. This darker version is a departure of the light-hearted material from years past and has an odd Harry Potter style vibe to it.

The world of the mortals and “immortals” (magic users have longer lives) were once at odds centuries ago. The latter were hunted down and the mythos point to thirteen witches who took the fall so the rest may live.
