This Winter Crunchyroll has a good lineup of works, returning and new, to satisfy. Rather than chasing everything, this selection leans into darker fantasy, legacy continuations, and intimate supernatural stories worth the time.

Winter 2026 Crunchyroll Picks Although a bit late, here’s what’s playing for the Winter Crunchyroll season. It’s a familiar mix of a few new series, a lot of returning ones, and my own picks on what’s worth the time. I never try to catch everything. After sampling trailers and leaning into the genres that usually reward my attention, I narrow things down to a focused shortlist. It’s easier to manage, especially alongside theatre trips and a growing pile of graphic novels.

In addition to my top five choices, two movies deserve mention too. Please see below for what I’m looking forward to:

Sentenced to Be a Hero This adaptation of Rocket Shōkai’s light novel flips heroism into a sentence rather than a calling. In a world where being a “hero” is punishment, Xylo Forbartz, a condemned goddess killer, is assigned to Penal Hero Unit 9004, forced into endless combat against monstrous abominations. Death offers no release, only resurrection and more violence. I’m drawn to how openly this interrogates systems of power, turning the usual fantasy reward structure into something oppressive and cyclical. When Xylo encounters a mysterious new goddess, their uneasy alliance threatens to unravel the machinery of eternal punishment itself.

When Genre Television Learned to Think, and Why It’s Quickly Vanishing from the Dial

When Netflix will soon dump all of Star Trek, and traditional networks are broadcasting less genre television than ever, where do audiences go to get their fix?

genre television's fading gloryLooking back, the last century feels like the moment genre television quietly defined its contract with the audience. Most of those early experiments arrived in short waves, and like the tides, they came and went. Some returned decades later on specialty stations or streaming platforms. And these days, nearly everything is being tucked into quieter shores. Every so often, the tropes that once defined a series are reskinned for a new generation, which is simply how television writing evolves.

From that first wave, some re-dos leaned into long-form storytelling, while others stayed loyal to the standalone format.

The 70s offered a handful of tests, including Shazam! (1974–1976), Wonder Woman (1975–1979), and The Incredible Hulk (1977–1982). The latter proved that if you give audiences a hero they can empathize with, they will follow even an unresolved quest, like Bruce Banner’s search for a cure. Sadly, many genre series never reached a true conclusion. The Time Tunnel (1966–1967) is only one of several 60s science-fiction shows left without closure.

What Lies Beneath Bone Lake Isn’t Another Scooby-Doo Mystery Inc. Special

In Bone Lake, a stressed couple’s retreat turns nightmarish when their Airbnb is double-booked by strangers with hidden motives, unleashing paranoia, violence, and a Raimi-esque finale.

Although Bone Lake is thematically different from Swap, another movie I saw many months ago, the former is more of a thriller and the latter a vampire flick. I won’t say which is better. Both works have their merits. While both lean a little too far into erotic elements, neither is without scandal. Just how far one wants to sit through this work depends on your tolerance for the subject matter. Director Mercedes Bryce Morgan and writer Joshua Friedlander had an idea and explored it with a modest budget to make this isolated cabin-in-the-woods scenario feel genuinely dangerous.

Here, Sage (Maddie Hasson) and Diego (Marco Pigossi) are a couple who could use an escape. Although their relationship seems solid, things get thrown overboard after they arrive at a luxurious, secluded lakeside mansion by Bone Lake for a romantic weekend. Diego also has a novel he should finish, and at some point, he plans to propose. Since Sage has put her career on hold to support him, I suspect something deeper is simmering between them.

full moon horror moviesFull Moon Features isn’t currently producing a new mainline entry in its iconic full moon horror doll franchise. Instead, the studio has shifted its attention to re-releasing some of their classics in a “silent film” format. Well, there’s sound, otherwise how else can one hear those screams? With the Noir format, four films are being revisited, and it works very well for the Axis storyline, just to give it some grit.

While other fans are waiting for a continuation of the solo spin-offs featuring fan-favorite puppets, thankfully this IP isn’t fully resting.  Furnace: Leech Woman (announced in March 2023) may  be stalled; although disappointing, hopefully all six of Toulan’s puppets will get their due. Currently, Blade: The Iron Cross and Doktor Death makes up the puppet brigade.

Until new films arrive, it’s the perfect time to explore the Puppet Master series in full. One of the franchise’s most interesting storylines is the Sutekh arc. First mentioned in Puppet Master 4: The Demon, Sutekh’s essence wreaks havoc in The Final Chapter via a mystical totem. These films also introduce the elixir of life, a mysterious substance stolen long ago by the Mad Arab from a temple dedicated to this chaos god, later sought by André Toulon.

Autumn Animated Series Guide and Beyond. What’s Best to Watch and What’s Best to Avoid

Late 2025’s slate of cartoons mixes fairy-tale mysteries, anime eco-adventures, and Afrofuturist visions. A few sparkle, some stumble, but each animated series reminds us what’s ripe for storytelling.

Autumn 2025 animated series guideWhen the autumn slate of television programming for youths is in full gear, just what we enjoy watching isn’t always going to be offered on the big three—Amazon Prime, Netflix or Hulu. There’s some great animated series in the world of streaming rather than network for obvious reasons. Luckily, the last stretch of 2025 has a few curious newcomers and oddball experiments worth watching—or at least watching for. Some shimmer with potential, others… less so (Armorsaurs, we’re side-eyeing you). As to be fair for Devil May Cry, they deserve honourable mention despite having started in Spring than Fall.

Smart writing, lush design, and a tone that doesn’t talk down to its audience—it’s Apple’s most confident foray into youth fantasy since Wolfwalkers. And if you’ve seen DreamWorks Curses! you’ll recognise the storytelling model used too!

Who is Worse? The Twits, Tweedledee, or Tweedledum?

Equal parts absurd and unsettling, Netflix’s The Twits brings Dahl’s world of gleeful cruelty to animated life with sharp humour and twisted heart.

The Twits is one of those movies where viewers will either click with it or not. For fans familiar with Roald Dahl’s story, the titular couple remain delightfully vile yet oddly sympathetic. For newcomers, however, Mr. and Mrs. Twit (voiced by Johnny Vegas and Margo Martindale) appear as two humans at their worst—mean-spirited, petty, and oblivious to the flaws in their own partnership. They’re less a Gomez-and-Morticia duo and more like Wednesday and Pugsley without the sibling bond, united by mischief but lacking the familial charm.

Enter two orphans, Beesha (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) and Bubsy (Ryan Anderson Lopez), whose immediate connection shows they care more for each other’s welfare than anything else. On the brink of adoption into separate families, the children are caught in the fallout of the Twits’ latest schemes. Bubsy’s potential parents withdraw after chaos literally spills all over them. And as the story unfolds, the orphanage itself risks closure. The cost of maintaining it is high, underscoring just how precarious life can be for children in such situations.
