One of the best horror comics from 2015 is Puppet Master published by Action Lab Comics. A few years later, the series abruptly ended, and Curtain Call released to tie up loose ends. Written by Shawn Gabborin and drawn by Michela Da Sacco, the tale continues down the path had the movies been able to continue prior to the Axis trilogy. This new saga fits in an odd place, in between the present day’s terror (the original film) to the past after Toulin shot himself, and giving Danny Coogan the title role in Axis of Evil.

During the 2018 San Diego Comic Convention, Full Moon Features announced the release of Dollman Kills the Full Moon Universe and I have to wonder if that means a reboot is coming? Gabborin is writing for this company’s new label, Full Moon Comix, and is authoring this very first title! His narrative style is very faithful to recreating the camp which I enjoy from this production house and I will be looking forward to seeing this diminutive figure take on Blade! I wrote a detailed news and review for Drunk in a Graveyard, which can be read here.

The Puppet Master 2018 movie releasing Aug 17th certainly suggests a huge reset is happening. New up-and-coming filmmakers are taking the charge. A bigger question will be in whether the origins are going to change too. The comics set the tale in the present day to avoid cinematic continuity conflicts and one beautiful detail Gabborin sets up is in how the souls transferred to the puppets; they retain the spirits of the person they once were.

Puppet Master: Axis Termination Arrives Sept 15th, A “War Toys” Review

Before watching Puppet Master: Axis Termination, getting caught up is a must! It will help those who have not seen the films in a while to make sense out of the introduction, and remember who the major players are for this conclusion to this trilogy.

Although many years have passed in the real world (the last film was released in 2012), the wait for the conclusion to this subset of films is worthwhile. Crowdfunding was required to help get this final chapter off the ground. Charles Band wrote and directed this piece. His pulp style narrative is tinged with a taste for the mystic arts. I became a die-hard fan of this series because of the loose Ancient Egyptian connections. The god Sutekh (Set) holds the secrets to the reanimation process which gives life to Blade and his team. Of course, the Nazis want it! This connection may well come into play with the conclusion. However, “War Toys” is part one and it’s a 30 minute tease. This segment will release September 15th, with the next pieces to come on the 22nd and 29th.

Puppet Master: Axis Termination (2017)By Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)

Puppet Master: Axis Termination, the 11th film in the series, is coming! It will premiere on Full Moon’s Amazon channel (U.S., U.K and Germany) first as a three part series, and be offered next month as a full length film. No date has been set for video release, but anyone with a subscription to either streaming networks will get to see “War Toys” on September 15th, with the as yet titled episodes on the 22nd and 29th within the same month.

Although many years have passed since the last film, hopefully Full Moon will offer a trilogy set filled with extra goodies when the this latest movie hits shelves. I will be one willing to buy these movies again if this is producer Charles Band’s plan. If I can be patient this long (five years), I can keep on going for an ultimate video release package. But before this can happen, the feature-length cut will appear on the El Rey Network in October, in time for Halloween, and see the allied forces do justice.
