Filmmaker and environmentalist Patricia Sims always knew she wanted William Shatner as the master storyteller in her two documentaries examining the Asian elephants plight. He’s more than just Captain Kirk of a highly loved science fiction franchise; he is an advocate for animal rights and he provides the narration in Return to the Forest (2013) and When Elephants Were Young (2015). The former is freely available online and the latter is getting a hometown premiere in Victoria, BC at the 2016 Victoria Film Festival. Plans for a wider theatrical release is coming and It’s most likely going to take place close to, if not on World Elephant Day on August 12th in 2016. A streaming and video release will no doubt follow, but when will mean either waiting patiently like this creature or time travelling to the future to see the product.

She started making wildlife films in the 90’s, starting with examining the impact hunting whales and dolphins for its meat (or sale to marine parks) are having in a cultural level. Her examination also includes looking at the scientific studies made of these mammals. They are sentient creatures with cognitive abilities. Fortunately, the practice of using them as a resource is slowly being put to the past, and thankfully, present-day attitudes wants to see the species survive.

“In the 90s, there was a cultural awakening predominantly among the younger generation about what shouldn’t be done. Animals of all kinds are very intelligent and [their survival is] important for the health of the environment,” remembered Sims.

John de Lancie lands at Emerald City 2014!

By Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)

John de Lancie

Emerald City Comiccon announced today that Q himself will be at next year’s big event! For mortals, that means John de Lancie will be appearing all three days at this show.

This versatile actor made his way into the science fiction scene by playing the irrepressible and omnipotent anti-hero in Star Trek: The Next Generation, Deep Space 9 and Voyager. His on-screen panache made this character a unique fixture in the lexicon of this series and his ability to immerse himself into the roles he plays make him an actor that must be followed.

But with a career spanning nearly 40 years, some long-time television viewers may recall his appearance in The Six Million Dollar Man and Emergency! He’s become a fixture in the pop culture scene with roles that includes Stargate SG-1, but he shows that he has a voice to remember in Duck Dodgers and Young Justice. To hear his take in how television entertainment has evolved will no doubt be one huge panel worth attending, and to find out what he will be doing next will be equally exciting.

Duck Dodgers is Crazy! Season Two DVD Reviewed

If volume two included the sequel, Duck Dodgers and the Return of the 24½th Century, that would have put this release right on par with the first.

Duck Dodgers S2 DVD Cover ArtThe future is doomed if Duck Dodgers has anything to say about it. Abandoned into a cryogenic stasis for an unknown reason and later discovered in the 24½ Century by the meticulous Dr. Ignatius Q Hi, the only one to blame is but himself. All the tomfoolery that Dodgers engages in this future world could have resulted in seeing him permanently put in the freezer forever, but the people in this era must be extremely patient and forgiving. And fans of this series can finally watch the second season set, Duck Dodgers: Deep Space DuckDuck Dodgers, that’s set for July 23rd release.

A few people were fortunate to find this two-disc release defrosting a day early. And it is worth playing right away to recall all the idiocy that this duck represents. Eight years may seem long for those fans waiting for this video release (which began back in February) but the wait is certainly worth it. Hopefully the third season will not be too long in coming.
