By Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)

Captain America: Winter Soldier Poster

Captain America: Winter Soldier is going to get more than political in its new take at a look back at the Cold War. The fight will take to the skies with some impressive dogfights with Falcon in the lead if this new trailer is any indication. Yes, that is a spoiler, but anyone who has followed the casting talk and the forums will know who the superheroes are for this upcoming film.

Spider-Man 2 Trailer Rips into Times Square! (and Thoughts)

By Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)

Spider-Man 2 Poster

Spider-Man fans may well want to tear into this latest trailer for story clues. Released on New Year’s Eve, this trailer teases at a big fight in Time Square and fortunately, it does not look like it is happening around the same date … or does it? Plenty of people are seen converging upon this famous intersection in New York City and the inter-titles suggests a big party is going on.

In this short, not only does one villain appear, namely Electro, but also there seems to be two more waiting in the wings! Rhino gets a massive upgrade ala the mechanical Green Goblin suit which may borrow an idea from Sam Raimi’s version, and it’s this behemoth that I’ll be looking forward to seeing. I’m sorry, Jamie Foxx, but although you look terrifying as Electro, it’s the mechanical Perissodactyla that is drawing me in to supporting this film.

Explaining the Myths behind Thor: The Dark World and A Movie Review

By Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)

The Aether may well be what the scientists of Earth would call Dark Matter if audiences needed a clearer definition. A better explanation is that it is a fifth element that the many forces in Thor: The Dark World are after. Some seek to control it and others want to bury it.

In this latest Marvel Universe movie, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) has to protect the Nine Realms from being destroyed by it. Malekith (Christopher Eccleston) is out to control this quintessence but in the last great war in the realm of Asgard, Bor (father of Odin), sealed it away and tossed it out into the multiverse for it to be lost forever. This introduction sets up the rest of the tale, and viewers are best advised to make notes of everything, or see this film again in 2D.

Finding Plenty of Character with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

AgentsEd Sum: Is it my imagination or is Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. a re-imagining of Torchwood? I love the set up of this series and the characters that are introduced.

Agent Phil Coulson has this nice wry humour that Clark Gregg knows how to finesse, and it gives this series some light-hearted moments that I would not consider to be overly hilarious. Many fans of this series may well be wondering how the heck did he come back to life? Or, did he even die in the first place? That answer may well never be answered, but as I continue to watch this show, hopefully more clues will be given.

My theory is that he’s a clone, with all the memories of the original Coulson transplanted into him.

James Shaw: Before I watched the first episode, I thought that since Gregg was in this series, that it would take place in a timeline before the Avengers movie. It’s obvious to me that this is not true and I am left with the feeling of a cop-out. On one hand I can understand why they need Clark Gregg for this series, because how many were truly going to watch a series without Gregg attached to the cast.

But I just can’t help getting that sinking feeling. I think it was the same feeling when I saw the ending to the Last Samurai with Tom Cruise. Having him not commit seppuku like the rest of the samurai in the end left it with a true Hollywood ending where the star had to survive beyond all costs even if his character’s dignity was left with questions.

Ant-Man Dated and Pirates of the Caribbean 5 Pushed Back

ant_man_art_a_lWill Ant-Man be a dead ant, if the reports from both Slash Film and The Hollywood Reporter are any indication?

Edgar Wright’s Marvel movie about a scientist, Henry Pym, discovering sub-atomic particles that can change a mass’ size can mean either high budget effects or lower than expectation scares in a busy summer movie month. The big question the industry folks are asking is how well will this movie perform in the middle of summer, now that this film has been pushed to July 31, 2015.

On this busy plate is Avengers: Age of Ultron on May 1, Inside Out on June 19, Pirates of the Caribbean 5 on July 10. No date has been set for Star Wars Episode VII.

But with todays news that PoTC being put on hold, there is finally some breathing room. But as for what that means for the mouse, are they overreaching themselves? Fortunately, they have the sense to pace all these blockbuster titles out throughout the next few years.

The next step for the Avengers to make may include Pym. But until phase 3 of the Avengers saga is developed, what’s next is only a version of the East Coast scene. Fans might end up seeing a formation of the West Coast Avengers to save the day!
