A Mad Cave Holiday and Pulpy Graphic Novel Gift Guide

Mad Cave Studios has quietly become a powerhouse for pulpy, character-driven comics, from classic heroes like Flash Gordon, The Phantom, and Dick Tracy to modern favourites like Nottingham, Hound, and The Last Session. This pulpy graphic novel gift guide rounds up their best bets for holiday reading.

Mad Cave Santa Hat Pulpy Graphic Novel Gift GuideAnyone noticing a recurring theme in this pulpy graphic novel gift guide of this publisher’s works isn’t wrong. We love our golden age heroes! Without them, we wouldn’t have many of the blockbuster films and pop-culture icons we adore today. Their fingerprints are everywhere, and the fact that classic tropes still thrive on the big screen says a lot about their staying power. And who knows—maybe these stories will inspire a new generation of readers too.

Here’s a look at the best of the best, including some recent releases:

Defenders of the Earth

Defenders of the Earth

Originally an animated television series from 1986, this property endures because of its powerhouse team-up of heroes past and present—Flash Gordon, The Phantom, Mandrake the Magician, and Mandrake’s assistant Lothar—facing off against Ming the Merciless in the far-off future of 2015. Although that was a decade ago in our reality, the series stands the test of time. The complete series home video release is still in print (Amazon link).

Reading this work is a guilty pleasure, and while some knowledge of the series is helpful, the way this collection recaps events is quite decent. Not only has Mad Cave republished the original run of comic books, they also have an ongoing series. The result is a delightful blend of retro charm and modern sensibility. Coming soon is Dark Destiny, which continues the adventures!

Where is The Loud House? From The Loudest and Proudest to Broadcast Information….

… we have a report on comic book and broadcast news regarding this show. While some parts of the world get to see season nine of The Loud House early, fans in North America get to read The Loudest and Proudest–released just in time for Pride Month!

The Loud House- The Loudest and Proudest
Available to purchase on Amazon USA

In addition to being a collection of new tales and old, The Loud House: Loudest and Proudest is a celebration of the best comic strips published to date about the Loud and Casagrande family. When North America is lagging behind with the release of season nine on Nickelodeon, fans in this country will need to look elsewhere to get their fix. I’m glad this compilation is here to fill in this gap. And what’s presented examines hilarious slice of life moments and LGBTQ+ representation in the later tales.

The foreword by Kevin Sullivan, co-producer, introduces why this edition exists. No prior knowledge about this IP is required as a summary at the back explains the setup. And as for whether this work is canonical has me curious. I like to know if Sam Sharp and Luna will become more than best friends; the animated series has sometimes explored their relationship.

Don’t Open It Now! Save Mad Cave Studios Ghostbox For October Release.

Family secrets may well be tucked away in Ghostbox, an upcoming title from the creative team of Mike Carey, Pablo Raimondi and José Villarrubia!

ghostbox comic book coverWhile some people are preparing for some summer fun, publishers have plans set for All Hallow’s Eve! While that’s two seasons away, I’m even considering what’s coming out and want to be eager for. And with a title like Ghostbox, I can’t help but wonder if this team is taking inspiration from the legend of the Dybbuk box?

Now that’s one storage unit I dare not want to open! Following the announcement are the preview pages.

From the Press Release:

Mad Cave Studios proudly presents Ghostbox, a gripping supernatural thriller from New York Times bestselling author Mike Carey (Lucifer, The Girl With All the Gifts) and celebrated artist Pablo Raimondi (X-Factor, Sacred Creatures), with colours by José Villarrubia (Sweet Tooth, Mirror). Blending mystery, urban horror, and emotional suspense, this original graphic novel unboxes trauma, family secrets, and the supernatural forces we inherit.

Mad Cave Studio’s Fate: The Winx Saga, The Shadow War Makes Its Mark!

All the latest news and info regarding The Winx Saga is recounted here, which updates fans on both the graphic novel and animated front!

Fate- The Winx Saga, The Shadow War
Available to preorder on Amazon USA

Release Date
July 22, 2025

The live-action Fate: The Winx Saga breathes life to a franchise I miss watching. While the latest is a good Netflix series, it does not have the same appeal as the original. Iginio Straffi’s character designs made it unique, and despite changes in directions in later seasons, I enjoyed it. And until the rumoured animated reboot series gets broadcast (more on this later). I’ll take what’s there and eagerly give Fate: The Winx Saga, The Shadow War, volume two of the graphic novel series, a read!

Mad Cave Studios and Rainbow Group are pleased to announce this upcoming graphic novel, and they got more information about it.

With A Comic Book Titled, Eat Your Young, Is Coming This Summer by Mad Cave Studios….

…. Immortality is a curse. Legacy is a weapon. And Blood is the only way out! No, Eat Your Young is not based on Renfield, but it might!

Eat Your Young Comic Book CoverMad Cave Studios
Release Date: Aug 20, 205

When Mad Cave Studios announces a comic book titled, Eat Your Young, people are going to pay attention! That’s because there’s an unspoken rule where no harm should come to a child. And when it’s described to be like Highlander and Oldbay (in addition to the aforementioned tales), that’s a formula readers will no doubt want to see how all of this can work, myself included!

Can there be only one, or what happens when every kid on Earth is gone? As for who would desire this, those are my burning questions in this release. And how can I not pick up a comic with a character whose name is like mine?

From the Press Release

Mad Cave Studios is proud to unleash Eat Your Young—a visceral, character-driven blood feud from writer Brian Buccellato (Midlife, Chicken Devil, The Flash) and artist Mattia Monaco (Knock Em Dead, Kalya), with letters by Buddy Beaudoin (Gatchaman), and Cover B by Stefano Simeone (Good Luck).

Free Comic Book Day is Almost Here! Top Picks of the 2025 Season.

When Free Comic Book Days offers to folks, the best in what pop culture represents, it’s safe to say which franchises have lasting power as long as those IPs stay consistent.

Free Comic Book DayFree Comic Book Day is almost here! And in 2025, the selection has only gotten more diverse to include anime style offerings. That is, Tamashii Nations and Gunpla have teamed up to put together an exclusive Mobile Suit Gundam Wing bonus comic. Not every retailer will offer this, so it’s best to hunt around in your local city to locate who has this or not.

Besides this title, the other works I’m excited about are the following. I will include notes where possible as I received previews of Mad Cave Studios release to whet my appetite for picking up the print edition. Instead of Gatchaman, this time they’re expanding their selection of nostalgia classics to include Speed Racer! There’s another title, but please read on to find out.
