Kitsune Games is releasing major updates and offering new stuff for those who love Kitsune Tails, a retro-style platformer. The reason it’s doing so well is not only because of its colourful graphics but also its LGBTQ representation. In why we love it here is because of how well the folklore from Japan is weaved into the storyline.

They announced expanded Steam Workshop support (custom levels!) at the simple click of a button, release of an official soundtrack, and new quality-of-life features within the game!

From the Press Release:

The Steam Workshop update comes with a number of quality-of-life features, including new Speedrun Timers and a much-requested post-game character swap option. Pick up the OST by composer Jorge Saldías on Steam now for $4.99, or in a new Deluxe Edition bundle for $22.49.

A Nerd’s Guide to the 2024 Vancouver Fringe Festival

For those unable to make it to the Victoria show, the Vancouver Fringe Festival will have a few acts from this island show on the mainland!

Vancouver Fringe Festival Generic
Runs September 5th to 15th, 2024

The Vancouver Fringe Festival is celebrating its 40th anniversary, and this event promises to be big. Just where one can find the cake will depend on what they announce for parties. And for those at Terminal City from September 5th to 15th, Granville Island will be abuzz with lots of fun events for all to enjoy! This list does not include the acts from the Victoria show that will be coming over. For a list on that, please visit this guide.

What I offer is mostly a sampling. As I’ve said before in my preview for the Victoria event, each year won’t necessarily be representative of everything that can arrive for any local event. Here are my top five picks (please note, the links go to this festival’s ticket office for that show).

Hot Dog!Devon More Music presents an outdoor art-rock show… for the dogs! Canines and their human companions can enjoy Devon’s infectious originals alongside curious cover songs in the open air – under the cover of Granville Island’s Picnic Pavilion. This show aims to turn the old adage “never work with children or animals” on its head, and prove that anything is paw-sible!

All well-socialized dogs and humans, big or small, young or old are welcome to join in the pet-a-palooza. Parade your pet and earn tasty treats for tremendous tricks (provided by the Granville Island Pet Treatery). Have a ball with Devon’s Doggy Dance Party. Regardless of how ruff your day is going, this is sure to be a chance to unleash yourself and raise the woof!

Through a series of interconnected narratives that open into a realm of infinite possibility, this physical theatre piece embraces the emotional and physical complexities that define our shared humanity, inviting audiences to reflect on the threads that unite and separate us.

With Kitsune Tails, Players Can Do Speed Runs and More As Crazy Like A Fox

…or should that be bright-eyed and bushy-tailed when considering the rich environments that can experienced when entering the exotic worlds offered in this game?

Kitsune Tails Logo DesignThe world of Shinto religion comes alive in the videogame Kitsune Tails. And true to this product’s namesake, it’s about a young lady fox embarking on a hero’s journey, and encountering various creatures and yokai along the way. Some are (thankfully) good-natured and others evil. After many weeks of casual play, I’m finally finding where I can purchase power ups. Technically, you can’t buy them right from the get go, and you can find that place located in the village’s main hub. I was wondering where that was hiding and it took searching to find it!

There’s no Mac port. I’m on this operating system more often and the PC laptop I own doesn’t allow for hours of long play unless I tweak the settings.

In this retro platformer, I found more of the latter in the actual game-play and the former in the cut-scenes. The graphics of the game depict everything in the style of a classic 8-bit game. It’s basically Super Mario Bros. 3 / World with all the bonus material later development of this property now offers. That includes speed running, creating custom maps, and playing carnival-like minigames (the best part). Players can use simple-to-use modding tools, easy-to-learn Lua scripting and the open source Tiled Map Editor to create their open custom levels if they find this game too easy!

[Victoria Fringe 2023] When the Phantom Pain is Real, What Else can a Lost Soul Feel?

Some memories should not be best left buried, but dealt with carefully. In Sarah, Mo, and We’re All Friends’ theatrical presentation, Phantom Pain, maybe it’s best not to completely ignore it….

Phantom Pain Promotional Image This year the theatre company, ‘Sarah, Mo, and We’re All Friends,’ presents a brilliant late Victorian-age ghost story known as Phantom Pain. And when Theatre SKAM is offering the studio space for them to present this performance as a work in progress, I’m sure there’ll be more shows to come as the rough edges are ironed out, and maybe get a revision or two. I even have my own suggestions (which I’ll address at the end).

In this story, a talented painter, Constance (Annalyn Kind), has not gotten over the loss of Fenella (Becky Miner). These two are soul mates. Sadly, consumption would claim the life of the blonde socialite. Their love is eternal. When they first met, the attraction was instant! Although that would form a rift with a mutual friend, Daisy (Tamra Marie), who was the girlfriend at the time, nobody could truly stay mad forever.
