The Dirt on The Dirt: The Mötley Crüe Biopic

Mötley Crüe had their share of individual problems. To compress nearly thirty years of their time into a 108-minute film is simply not possible.

The Dirt on Mötley Crüe PosterSay what you will about the lads from Mötley Crüe–Tommy Lee, Mick Mars, Vince Neil, Nikki Sixx–but after watching The Dirt on Netflix, I felt rebellious again! I wanted to thrash it up and relive those glory days. Yes, I listened to a lot of heavy metal back then. Plus, the ’80s to ’90s was a memorable time in music history. We went from punk rock to heavy metal to grunge. To say what’s next this style of music, who knows.

This heavy metal band’s sound was toned down when they entered their glam phase and I’m thankful I had Judas Priest’s hard-hitting edge to counterbalance. The Crüe gang had another thing coming with the rockstar lives they led; not every telling moment and scandal was revealed.

It’s a Heavy Trip Rock n’ Roll Show

Spoiler Alert

Metalheads should unite and embark on a Heavy Trip. This Finnish film sees a local band from the small town of Taivalkoski wishing to make it in the big leagues, but to do so means dealing with a lot of challenges. They have been practising for 12 years! The resistance from the residents (being bullied as queers) and a rival musician makes up the plot, but to be respected is tougher.

To create a sound they can call their own gets amusingly fixed. I do not want to say what it is since it spoils a significant part of the film. Other obstacles include stage fright and a drummer who keels over. No, this isn’t Spinal Tap, but when they are playing in the garage one day, a festival promoter discovers them and invites them to play.

Supernatural Sounds to Rock Out To for Halloween

Rock n' Roll ShowBy Ed Sum
(The Vintage Tempest)

Music and All Hallow’s Eve—throughout the years, many bands have offered hits like the Monster Mash or solo acts, featuring Thriller. They are goofy fun. With rock musicals, they go the extra mile and tell a story. I made a list years ago of productions that one can see theatrically, but I got to wondering: what about those albums that do not have a stage show attached to it?

Listeners can listen to one track or hear the entire album to understand each song in a  greater context. This list I offer is certainly worth cranking up the All Hallow’s Eve season, especially for those in the mood for something slightly different from the mainstream. In no particular order:

Iced Earth
Night of the Stormrider (1991)

Heavy Metal dominates this list for good reason. It’s the perfect musical genre to tell recount tales of the occult, especially with the type of sonic melodies heard. It’s not to say other genres or the music of Mozart can not do the same; the composition of how the notes are organized, the way the lyrics are presented and how it works in harmony (or disharmony) says everything.

When the story focuses in on a man feeling betrayed, that is the making for a decent plot. He’s turned his back on Faith, and the elemental forces of hate use him to destroy the world. In the case of Amadeus (the movie deserving honourable mention in this list), Antonio Salieri did everything he could to torment his foe but ended up haunted by his deeds instead.

Babymetal Battles Evil Spirits in New Music Video ‘Karate’

By James Robert Shaw (The Wind up Geek)

Babymetal2Japanese metal/J-pop fusion group Babymetal have released the second track in video form from their upcoming album ‘Metal Resistance’. ‘Karate’ sees the teenage trio in a martial arts showdown to the death against three skull-masked adversaries. In order to defeat their foes the girls have to first fight the spirits of deceased warriors that are called up to protect their mistresses. In a battle that can only be compared to a Dragon Ball Z episode, Babymetal almost tastes defeat from the encounter. It is only after picking themselves up off the ground they call upon the power of the Fox god. With a new force flowing through them each girl uses a unique power to dispatch their enemies,

“Karate” has a very heavy and dark feel and it’s reinforced with grinding guitar riffs that will have you banging your head along to the music. The release of ‘Metal Resistance’ will be followed by a World tour to kick off at the Tokyo Dome on what Babymetal has called “Fox Day” (April 1st). April 2nd will see the group perform at the SSE Arena, Wembley in London, England followed by a New York concert at the PlayStation Theater on May 4th.

‘Metal Resistance’ can be purchased in advance at Babymetal’s Official Merchandise Store.
