Highwater Press. From Little by Little to The Rez Doctor, This Publisher is Paving A Bright Future for Everyone!

Sometimes, reading influential books and graphic novels is enough to show how young readers can change their lives for the better, and Highwater Press is leading the way!

Highwater Press LogoHighwater Press continues to impress readers with heroes who can make a difference in everyday life. Whether this concerns a young child in Little By Little to another who desires to dream big in The Rez Doctor, just what makes these stories special is that these role models come from indigenous roots.

I’m glad this publisher has given me the opportunity to read most of their late summer and autumn catalogue of works. They opened my eyes to what anyone can be capable of. While the focus is on what these writers with First Nations upbringing can imagine up, I really enjoyed their takes on life, how to change for the better, and be more humane to one another.

For example, the Reckoner Rises (review) series shows teens coming together and learning how to use their mutant (superhero) abilities to take on the establishment. Not every graphic novel released are as simple as that. They just tackle social issues everyone should be aware of. After the discovery of a mass grave in Kamloops, the theme of how to heal and do better for a rewarding future will always be a theme. That aspect is central to what the Surviving the City series (review) is about.

A Nerd and Foodie’s Guide to the 2024 Vancouver International Film Festival

The selection of films offered at this year’s Vancouver International Film Festival is sure to sate the delight of fans across all genres, and yeah, we gotta visit Tojo’s restaurant too!

Vancouver International Film Festival Logo 2019Runs Sept 26 – October 6

When the Vancouver International Film Festival offers works that also concern why this city is beloved, that’s because my number one pick is still a place I need to visit one day! And I better have deep pockets since the sushi that’s offered here can be considered by some as perfection. But what’s more important is Tojo, the man behind the restaurant. When he’s been a fixture on television when I was growing up and catching him cook some delicious dishes for morning television viewers, I’m hooked!

But as for what else this festival offers, I offer my nerdy top ten guide. To note, the links go to online ticket sales and show times:

The Chef & the Daruma

The Chef & the DarumaThe inventor of the California Roll, chef Hidekazu Tojo helped bring sushi to mainstream popularity through his renowned Vancouver restaurant, Tojo’s. The Chef & the Daruma is a mouthwatering film touching on immigration, identity, and reinvention.

Angela’s Shadow

When a socialite visits her nanny’s remote reserve, she discovers her Cree ancestry and delves into her new-found spiritual traditions to save herself and her newborn baby from her husband’s psychotic, and purity-obsessed racism.

Top Five Animated Films To Look Forward to this Fall/Winter

Just how many animated films getting released world-wide needs to be counted. While I’m still anxiously waiting for White Snake 3, I have this guide to the American made works that will be out soon and later this year.

As my review of Transformers One have shown, not every film is worth checking out. That’s because I’m a die-hard fan of the original and Prime series. When this work completely changes the lore around, it’s fallen out of my list.

Also, there’s two films which have yet to make a North American side debut. They deserve an honourable mention, and nobody should be surprised that White Snake 3 and The Royal Cat, both Chinese animated movies needs to get marketed here. And there’s also Mononoke: The Movie from Japan!

THE WILD ROBOT
Sept 27

The Wild Robot Movie Poster - Animated FilmsChris Sanders is back, working at DreamWorks and I couldn’t be any happier. He’s done wonders with fond properties like Lilo & Stitch as well as How to Train Your Dragon. Whether that’s as an illustrator or director, there’s something about his visual style which makes those works stand out. Now that he’s helming this adaptation of Peter Brown’s bestselling illustrated book of the same name, and how he’ll apply his trademark should be exciting.

Twilight of the Gods. When Seeking Revenge Rather Than Love Is A Battlefield

When we were young, only the worthy are up to the challenge to cause the Twilight of the Gods.

Twilight of the Gods Official PosterNow playing on Netflix

Zack Snyder and his creative team hold a different idea regarding how Ragnarök came about, and Twilight of the Gods narrates remaking Hel. When this take shows how some of the Norse gods have no pity for Middle Earth, everyone is on their own! Here, King Leif (Stuart Martin) and Sigrid (Sylvia Hoeks) are to wed, and Thor (Pilou Asbæk) crashes the wedding while searching for Loki (Paterson Joseph), and this bride-to-be vows revenge.

Although this tale doesn’t fully draw from the legends, what’s recounted here is familiar. This take on the end of days concerns the love for a woman. It’s sort of the stuff of Norse legends, and overall, I enjoyed this eight episode saga since it only gets crazier as forces have to decide who to ally with.

Breezing onto VOD this Week: Sirocco and the Kingdom of the Winds

One of the reasons why Sirocco and the Kingdom of the Winds is taking its time to arrive on home media is that it should celebrate the season too, and Autumn feels just right.

Sirocco and the Kingdom of the Winds Movie PosterGKIDS & Shout! Studios
Now available on Amazon Prime and Apple TV.

Sirocco and the Kingdom of Winds is one of those wonderful and whimsical films I’ll gladly see time and time again, and it’s now available on demand! One reason is that it’s wildly colourful. When two kids get dropped off for a weekend with their babysitter, who is a well established writer of children’s fiction, little do they know that her words have power. One day, an illustration comes to life, and this mysterious rabbit (technically he isn’t one) says there’s trouble in the magical realm, it’s up to Juliette and her sister to venture into the Kingdom of the Winds instead of visiting Oz to do what’s right.

In a move considered very Studio Ghibli, they transform into anthropomorphic cats and do what they can to find the mysterious Sirocco, and save another woman as well. But when this person Selma has a connection to this strange magician, things aren’t as what they seem. To note, the real world connection is important, and that’s a detail I won’t spoil.

A more detailed review about this movie can be read here. I’m glad to view this movie again since this animation is one of two features acquired by GKIDS to be featured either theatrically or play at film festivals this year. I wanted to see this work again since it had a lot of magical moments to adore, and hoped to find it again. As for the eventual home video release, I don’t expect to find bonus features to be included and that’s okay.

The other work I’m anxious to see Ghost Cat Anzu, and I hope this feature will “haunt” cinemas this Autumn or be delivered to digital!
