DreamWorks’ Megamind Rules Finds Its Stride After Mid-Season!

When Eric Fogel isn’t no longer remembered for his work on Celebrity Deathmatch, it seems his talent is wasted in showrunning Megamind Rules, the indirect sequel to the movie, and followup to the lamented Doom Syndicate.

The second half of Megamind Rules is far better than the first because there’s a lot more of a serialised tale going on. Here, this villain turned hero (who I’ll nickname as Mega/MM) has to contend with Machiavillain (perfectly handled by the musician turned comedian Adam Lambert). This uber bad guy’s feelings got hurt when he switched, and to get him to return to his old ways is tougher than what Gru faced. This pointy nosed protagonist has a family to keep him grounded and when his brother is still up to no good, the polarity will always exist.

Here, MM has Chum/Minion (his ever so faithful number one), Roxanne who is now mayor of the city, and Keiko, a “Mega” fan, to help him fight crime. This new character was introduced in Megamind vs. the Doom Syndicate, and I wasn’t aware until I did some backtracking. I tried watching this direct to video sequel, and sadly, it simply didn’t live up to what the film represents.

Just How Archaic Must Be With Melissa F. Olson’s Latest Comic Book Project?

Archaic #1 will be on sale in comic shops everywhere on December 4, 2024.

Archaic Comic Book CoverAhoy Comics isn’t getting Archaic with this self-titled release where it concerns a sentient island taking care of its own residents. When they were once revered in the legends and lore from worlds long gone, or perhaps even forgotten, I can’t wait for December 4, 2024 to arrive.

On paper, this idea sounds like what Fantasy Island wanted to become before it went off air. I never bothered with the remake because I adore Ricardo Montalban. seem to recall some elements where Rourke was like a guardian. He would help those who come to realise what they desire comes at a price. Not everyone survives to the end, but for those who do, they are a little bit wiser. What they learn caps off each episode, and I have to wonder if this series will do the same? When this tale concerns the ancient gods of yore from mythology, I’m game to find out!

From the Press Release:

This modern-day action-adventure follows the newest residents of a sentient island populated by the gods and monsters of dead civilizations: a harried single mom and her three kids. From writer Melissa F. Olson (Project: Cryptid, Dead Spots), artist Sally Cantirino (I Walk With Monsters), and colourist Gab Contreras (Witchblood), the fast-paced mystery explores what happens to legends once the world no longer has use for them. Archaic #1 will feature a main cover by Cantirino, as well as variant covers from Liana Kangas and Emma Vieceli, and land in stores on this Winter.

It’s Never Too Early To Consider A Halloween Feast with The Long Family in September!

With this work from the Brazilian mind of Guile Branco, A Halloween Feast, is sure to satisfy fans who are familiar with the works of Coffin Joe.

A Halloween Feast Movie PosterBreaking Glass Pictures
On Digital and On Demand September 10.

Autumn is right around the corner, and already, movies set during the scariest night of the year are here! And not everyone is ready for A Halloween Feast. For Angela Long (Lynn Lowry), there’s more stress than usual, and when she’s trying to keep her family together, not every day is going to be perfect. Set somewhere in Middle America, this story is a satire on everything that can go wrong! After catching her husband (James Griggs) smoking weed one day, she’s done the worst thing possible: chop off his fingers! That resulted in her getting sent to the psych ward for treatment and monitoring, but even after being released, she’s never been the same again.

This film, written and directed by Guile Branco, has the feel of being more than a sitcom modelled after The Simpsons and a Troma movie. When considering his mentor was none other than, “Coffin Joe” Jose Mojica Marins, there’s some recognisable elements not only from this Brazilian auteur but also in what this actress offered based on her time with Uncle Lloyd. This movie just has that feel of belonging to two worlds.

When The Reckoner Rises, Just Who Are the Watchman?

God Flare is the latest volume in the Reckoner Rises series from best-selling author David A. Robertson.

The Reckoner Rises Book CoverHighwater Press

The Reckoner Rises is a graphic novel series that’s sure to turn heads. I would not advise jumping in with the latest volume, titled God Flare. I was curious because of the fantastic attention grabbing cover by Scott B. Henderson, but in order to understand what’s going on, I had to chase down the first two graphic novels. I got the feeling this work took inspiration from Alan Moore’s The Watchman, and overall, I’m not wrong!

When readers are first introduced to Cole, we find him on the verge of a breakdown and he doesn’t understand why he’s The Chosen One. He has the mutant ability which allows him to communicate with the dead, and for Eva, who has the powers of flight, they could easily become the next Alpha Flight! But when they’re living on a reserve, it seems they don’t have a lot of inspiration to go to the next level and do stuff for the good of their community. In the harsh winter world of what I assume is Northern Winnipeg, I’m sure the life there is no different from what I’ve learned in other works, like The Death Tour (documentary review link), which examines what life is like in these sleepy indigenous communities.

In Dragonkeeper, Why Is There Only One Protector?

Part of the charm in Dragonkeeper is because of Ping. She’s a character whom some may associate with Ray from Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Ping (Lucía Pérez) is the Dragonkeeper, and if she’s to help Danzi (Mario Gas), an elder oriental dragon, she better learn how to train the next generation too! That’s because someone asked her to deliver an egg to a magical pool so it can hatch. As for whether this baby will bond to the human, that’d be saying too much.

Although the choice to have mostly European voices instead of Chinese for this production is very unusual, all I had to do was imagine Michelle Yeoh and James Hong’s voice over what’s heard. Technically, the British/Australian casting isn’t out of place when considering who wrote the book. Carole Wilkinson is an Australian whose series did quite well when it was released down under. I suspect the producers wanted to keep this flavour.

When Fern Flowers Bloom Only One Day of the Year, It’s Not Just at the Victoria Fringe Festival!

In order to appreciate The Lighter Touch Art Collective’s play, When Fern Flowers Bloom, this primer will serve as a guide and be a review on what’s beautiful about this tragic tale of love, loss and life.

When Fern Flowers Bloom Publicity StillThe Lighter Touch Art Collective

Audiences wanting to see When Fern Flowers Bloom is best advised to know some aspects of Latvia folklore to fully appreciate every element this play offers. Otherwise, the symbolic elements may seem foreign. After seeing this show at the Victoria Fringe Festival, I want to dive even deeper into the lore because I suspect this tale also explores why the seasons change.

Just how this story begins had me vibing with “Here Comes The Sun,” by The Beatles but by the finale, I was thinking “Who’ll Stop the Rain?” by CCR. When the knowledge that Death is one of the characters, what’s presented addresses the traditions and rituals leading to Summer Solstice. Every culture celebrates it differently. Here, Jāņis (Erik Karklins) is a living incarnation of this season, and when this lady of the night can deliver more than a smile to his face every day, I fear for him!

Although Nāve’s (Sarah Ivanco) innocent side is that of a beautiful young woman in search of the rare Fern flower, there is more to her than meets the eye.
