YatsuraBeautifulDreamerBy James Robert Shaw (The Wind up Geek)

Discotek Media announced today their upcoming Japanese anime releases during their panel at Otakon in Baltimore, Maryland. Among some of the titles announced are Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer, Lupin III: Island of Assassins, Captain Harlock: Arcadia of My Youth, and Chargeman Ken.

Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer was the 2nd feature outing for characters based off the Urusei Yatsura manga series by Rumiko Takahashi. Written and directed by Mamoru Oshii, Beautiful Dreamer was ranked number 38 on a list of the top 100 anime by Animage Magazine and was number 9 of the Top 50 Anime Released in North America by Wizard’s Anime Magazine. Beautiful Dreamer will be released on DVD and Blu-ray with both English sub and dub available. The The dubs were pulled from the original master tapes. According to Discotek, the subs are to get a new “polish”. Extras are to be announced at a later date.

Captain Harlock: Arcadia of My Youth was different version of the retelling of Leiji Matsumoto’s Space Pirate Captain Harlock television series. Arcadia was also the last role of acclaimed Japanese actor Yujiro Ishihara before his death at 52 years old. Discotek’s Arcadia will be released on DVD and Blu-ray and will be from the Japanese master. The dub however is extremely old and is from the international Vengeance of the Space Pirate version. Vengeance was previously released by Celebrity Home Entertainment under the “Just for Kids” banner. But according to Discotek the edited version of Arcadia has the best master available. Extras are to be announced at a later date but what has been revealed is the Japanese trailers will be included in the release.

Young Lovecraft’s name is Howard in Shout! Factory’s “Frozen Kingdom” Release

unnamedBy Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)

From José Oliver (Author) and Bartolo Torres (Illustrator) web comic Young Lovecraft to Sean Patrick O’Reilly (Arcana Studio)’s Howard Lovecraft and the Frozen Kingdom, both illustrative products have redefined who this seminal master of the macabre is for people of all ages to enjoy.

While there’s no new material for the Young series and The Frozen Kingdom saw an evolution with a film, thankfully to see the latter product get animated has this fan excited. I enjoy both works, and the teaser offered during Free Comic Book Day made me glad a trade paperback of the Frozen Kingdom is getting reprinted and offered late October at comic book stores near you.

The animated version is being released by Shout! Factory September 27, 2016 just in time for my birthday. I could not be any more thrilled. It will be made available on DVD, Blu-ray, VOD and Redbox. The combo pack will include bonus content such as an audio commentary and featurette. More details will be forthcoming as the date nears. As for fans who love O’Reilly’s art style, an exclusive poster will be offered for those who pre-order directly from Shout! Factory’s website.

Howard Lovecraft and the Frozen Kingdom features the talents of Jane Curtin (3rd Rock from the Sun), Ron Perlman (Sons of Anarchy), Christopher Plummer (Pixar’s Up), Doug Bradley (Hellraiser), Kiefer O’Reilly (DC’s Legends of Tomorrow) and Alison Wandzura (CW’s Van Helsing). This film is said to be a veritable love letter to H.P. Lovecraft himself as it entwines new storytelling, actual events of H.P. Lovecraft’s life, iconic elements of his writings and literary characters Cthulhu, Shoggoth and more.

Shout! Factory to Distribute Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir! and Review

vlcsnap-2016-02-26-17h12m19s123

By Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)

Shout! Factory and ZAG Toon has formed an alliance with many other partners, such as TOEI and Disney Channel EMEA, to bring the French-Korean CGI-animated action adventure comedy series, Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir, to further broadcasting platforms. On May 3, 2016 will be the Shout! Factory Kids home video release of the first seven episodes of 26 for those who do not yet have access to it on television.

This program plays on Nickelodeon (USA), TF1 (France), ABC (Australia), EBS (Korea) and it will soon hit other markets such as Tele-Quebec (Canada), Gloob (Brazil), TVNZ (New Zealand), Proximus TV (Belgium), RTS (Switzerland) and LRT (Lithuania). The series is a fun watch, reminiscent in style to series like Sailor Moon. The anime influence is very noticeable. The main heroine, Marinette Dupain-Cheng is rather like Usagi Tsukino. Both are well-meaning and spirited (if not clumsy) individuals. Alya is Marinette’s best-friend and she’s not aware of her besties’ superhero identity. The humour between the two are great, and the costumes are inspired by the designs introduced in PIXAR’s The Incredibles.

Transformers: Robots in Disguise DVD is Set to Roll Out Oct 20th!

By Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)

unnamed

The next chapter in the Transformers saga is set to arrive on DVD October 20th, courtesy of Shout! Factory Kids and Hasbro. Transformers: Robots in Disguise follows after the events of Transformers: Prime, and with the focus on Bumblebee, viewers can learn about whether he has what it takes to become a leader like Optimus Prime.

This little yellow vehicle who could seems to have difficulty with accepting the fact that he’s now a leader. One aspect of this series’ charm is in seeing him trying to find that catch phrase that improves upon what Optimus Prime, who makes cameo appearances, often says. Bee has to lead a rag-tag team on Earth looking for escaped Deception prisoners.
